Words don't change their meaning though. People do.

It is what it is. If people started calling apples oranges and that became the norm, then eventually the dictionaries would catch up to the real world and change the meaning, along with a possible note on the original meaning and how it evolved away from that.

Fag means cigarette in some parts of the world.

Gay use to mean happy. Some still use it that way.

Really? What about Christians that like to say that Atheism is a religion, does that make Atheism a religion now?

I think it is better to have dictionaries define the words. Otherwise people can make words mean something that give them an advantage.

Originally "Atheist" was a term applied to anyone who held a religion other than yours.

Atheists aren't 'holding out for more information', they don't believe in god. That is their belief. What she should have said is agnostics.

@joeyws89 That depends on how deeply Atheistic they are. Most people who call themselves Atheist are really Agnostic.

@joeyws89 What corthew says is true. I haven't decided to collect stamps, but I haven't decided not to collect stamps. I'm simply against collecting the stamps that are being shoved in my face, because I would rather have my own choice which stamps I collect, if any at all. I'm not religious.

@corthew I've seen them preaching 'the god delusion' in the mall before lol. Granted it was done in jest, but they certainly embraced the stereotypical superiority complex, most suffer from.

@joeyws89 Agnosticism is usually reserved for those who are seeking an answer to the God question, or seeking a religion to believe in. I'm not seeking anything spiritual, and only rejecting it when it is shoved in my face - which happens a LOT.

True, atheism will get shoved in your face sometimes, but I don't believe it happens nearly as much as you say. If it does, then it's probably because people in your area are thrusting their religion on those who don't want it.

(cont...) Furthermore, a religion is an organized group of people who collectively believe a set of things. Agnosticism is as you said, unorganized. In fact, most agnostics never remain so for very long, and as such never meet very many other agnostics. I was an agnostic for a short while when I left Christianity.

So how can it be a religion if most of its members don't know the rest exist?

@TheReaverOfDarkness Okay fine, but that makes you non-religious, not Atheist. My point is that Atheism is a religion in itself, as they are committing to an answer about an unanswerable question. Agnosticism is the stance that you cannot know the answer therefore no one can be right. It is not a purgatory religion, for people waiting to be converted by one group of people or another, unless they are hypocrites and it certainly doesn't have to be organised for it to be your religious stance.

@joeyws89 You should look up the history of the word, "atheist".

Although the term's original roots mean, "without gods", it was used to refer to people who did not follow the god or gods of the person using the word, even if that person followed another god.

Christians were called atheists by the Romans for example.

@corthew So you're saying the word refers to people who oppose a particular religion, yet can believe in god? Perhaps in history, but I don't think that 's a relevant definition for today. Anyway, I'm over arguing over semantics :) You say potato, I say tomato lol
