Japan was a paranoid nation for centuries, and had a histroy of bad relations with China. Hell, Japan was founded by refugees fleeing the wrath of the First Chinese Emperor. Japan had to choose between building tanks and artillery pieces to fight the Soviets, or building ships and planes to fight the Anglo-Saxon powers. They didn't have enough industry to do both (or in the end, even one).

The main reason Japan went south not north was because they wanted the oil fields of Indonesia. The US-occupied Phillipines were in the way though -- hence the pre-emptive strike against Pearl Harbor.

China is too big for Japanese to conquer, they sent way too many troops into China, to the end of the war, they had over 70% of the army in China but could only hold the major cities in the eastern part. this greatly reduced their power to hold south Asia and the failure to attack Aussie and finally cost them to lose the war( their finest soldiers were holding Manchuria and got wipe by Russians at the end)

The same way Germany lost their war: attacking of Russia, which is too huge for them.

Nanjing still had 260,000 to 350,000 casualties, which is more than the two atomic bombs COMBINED, or put it another way, more casualties than some entire European nations, almost 5-6 times more than British civilian casualties or 3 times more than French civilian casualties. Its a truly appalling event. And remember, this is 3-4 weeks. Even the Holocaust didn't have numbers that high in that time period.

The part of Mexico which the US annexed was virtually uninhabited (most Hispanics there today are not descended from its former Mexican population, but from more recent immigrants). The Japanese by contrast invaded densely-populated China.

In fact the Japanese war with China wasn't started in Tokyo, but by some mad army officers in the Kwantung territory (Japan's "Hong Kong", where modern Dalian is).
