He probably needs the fro to quickly dissipate the heat being emitted from his cranium due to increased brain activity. Very much like a heat sink on a computer processor.
Why the boiling temperature of liquid hydrogen is higher than liquid helium? Molecules of hydrogen are smaller than helium atoms so the interaction between particles in liquid hydrogen are weaker. According to this, the boiling point of liquid hydrogen should be lower than helium... Or I just don't get it? Please, explain.
it is mostly due to the interactive forces between the molecules.
Hydrogen's intermolecular forces are very weak, but they do exist, allowing hydrogen to condense to a liquid.
Helium has almost no intermolecular forces, which explains its tendency to form superliquids and its resistance to forming a solid even close to absolute zero temperatures.
Thank you very much, it's very interesting (all that cryogenic things). Where can I read about it (do you know some web-pages)? Wikipedia is not enough for me :) I have one more question: How these interaction forces between liquid hydrogen and liquid helium molecules appear? Van Der Waal's forces or what?
hydrogen molecules are bigger than helium atoms - longer certainly along the inter-atomic axis. Also, the 2 electrons are more weakly bound than those of helium - meaning they are freer to form instantaneous dipole moments, thus increasing their strength of interaction.
Size is over-rated. Number of electrons is a more significant parameter in these weak binding forces. H2 and He both have 2 electrons, but the H2 ones are more loosely bound.
I suppose they might make similar facial expressions throughout their career while thinking about "science stuff." Effectively shaping their faces (and ect.) as such.
everything is solid at absolute zero. Well kind of, absolutly everything stops moving at all. It has no energy (other then its mass), so pretty much 0K is theoretical and not practical at all.
They first have to warm those sectors up to room temperature to be able to repair them. Then comes the obligatory maintenance period, so they'll restart the LHC probably early spring 2009.
I thought the video was very informative and well done! Btw, commenting on the narrator's hair is not an appropriate response to a science video like this one.
I wish that "proper" science journalism was as good as what you guys are producing, even though you are scientists rather than journalists. Or perhaps your videos are such good science journalism BECAUSE you are scientists rather than journalists.
And for those of you who might wonder what exactly dying to a black hole would mean, look up spaghettification (correct my spelling please) yeah it would suck, alot. lol.

Hi thanks for watching our films... for some the clips and mistakes you weren't supposed to see, have a look at our first outtakes video at our behind-the-scenes channel, nottinghamscience
well to all you that thought 2012 was the end, it seems that this micro black hole can take 50 months to 50 years, which puts it at 2012 if you go the months route. We're dead, lol.
huge particles collide at even higher force right outside our atmosphere all the time, creating larger amounts of energy than we could ever manufacture. dont fear black holes, fear bush, an d mcain obama.
I bet a friend £50 that the earth WON'T end in 2012. If it doesn't, ill be 50 pounds richer, if it does, well, I won't have to pay him anyway, because our carcasses will be in some next dimension.
I dont think we need to be messin with nature and physics to the point of needing to build a large hadron collider. They dont even know whats gonna happen when they REALLY use it. For all they know they could create enough anti-matter to start a black hole...smart
i didn't like the idea that lhc will startup 2008 bec. i had a strong feeling its the cause of 2012 consciousness shift. ^ maybe it'll be delayed till mid 2011.
I don't think they need to start it up period. Theres some things humans just were not meant to do...like create anti-matter. WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO WITH IT???
when a superconducting magnet loses this it's called a quench and is very impressive for another reason besides the fact that it can melt the coils. And that is the pressure that builds up as a result helium going from a gas to a liquid. One liter of liquid helium equal over 700 liters of helium gas, so I'm sure that there will be some not so happy technicians changing some gaskets.
I WANT THE SAME HAIRCUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! shampoo my hair with helium and protons and practicles and stuff!!!!!!!! and finaly I want to dance in the center of the colider nude with this haircut and sing "huuuge circles round and round lalalaa lalaa la la round and round lalala la" :D :D :D
In short, helium is used to cool the magnets in the hadron collider. The helium escaped, nothing was cooling the magnet. So it heated up, the wires gained resistance, and the magnet melted.
Hi, for those who enjoy our videos, we have posted a funny video of outtakes and mistakes at our behind-the-scenes sister channel, "nottinghamscience"
