Your dog is awesome. I'm in favor of a good dog instead of a home full of guns because of little ones ya know. With a dog like this I know the lady will be safe and sound from someone coming through the door uninvited.

Dog is only 1 layer in any protection system.

Dogs are easily defeated...poisoned, shot, knifed, maced

@StSimonOfTrent Those are good points. I won't be having a dog in place of fire arm(s), you are right, a dog is just one line of defense in a system.

I say the dog will give someone enough time to get yourself ready for a home defense/offense.

Yes, they can be shot, yes they can be knifed and yes they can be maced, but Yes a dog can be poisoned proofed, it requires training and letting the dog know the only safe place to eat is that nice bowl in the kitchen.

Poison proofing, is the hardest thing you will ever teach a dog, and your success will be a long shot.

I speak from experience.

I believe in Protection dogs, but they are way overrated if only used alone.

Learn firearm safety, carry at all times, use alarsm, lights, secure locks on doors and windows, and secure the perimeter.

Big dog and little dogs are both useful and give one time to gather a weapon.

I prefer a Shotgun for Home defense. Glock for my car and person.

I was dog "handler" in the Marine Corp. It goes without saying handlers don't train the dog. I'm looking into training now that I am out and have started a family and have little one's.

I have read a lot about working dog genetics and litters born to "titled" dogs. I really want a Bandog because of the size and alleged gameness they have been bred for. Do you think I should start with a GSD?

@StSimonOfTrent I ask because I want to do it right but it seems that the Bandog is indeed part of a breeding program for these protection skills but seem to hear from the Schutzhund community "stay away from that backyard macho b.s. ect ect". They say the dogs have yet to be passing on the working skills in the blood.

What are your thoughts? The GSD is like the small 9mm police issue, but the Bandog is like a .357 at home... your thoughts please?

I know someone that trained a GSD that actually Killed a burgular.

Dog was reported 'missing' by its owner, said he ran away and dog was returned.

Some Working GSDs, Rotts, Mals can be very effective. But know what youre buying.

Bandogs & Bulldogs are great, can be effective guard/manstoppers.

Depends on what youre after-kids? Suburbs? Lifestyle?

At some time, dog must be trained in Defense, and not play/prey and thats when the dog gets serious. Id do very little socializing-mistrust strangers
