  • What a performance, a ghostly rendition of a beautiful end. Well done!

  • no instruments....this is music...and true talent

  • It's chilling since Ralph is in his late 80's now and is singing this song which must ring too true at that stage

  • WHITE POWER!!!

  • @dgallegos4201 This is originally a black gospel song...

  • It feels like this piece was made in the image of Edgar Allen Poe's works, at least thats how I felt when my mother used to read those stories to me.

  • I was a mere 10 maybe 15 ft. from him as he sang this live one time.To date it is the most amazing thing I've ever heard, well lets say the second .A woman's voice whispering "I love you" would be the first.

    =)

  • I met Ralph in person and he is just a great person. Got a banjo head signed by him what a meet..

  • @ doctorwhoEPICFAN

2 days ago my father nearly died.. that song was in my mind all the time... i wished that someone else should been gone, but not my father... it thrills me, makes me confused, coz i'm not a misanthropic freaks, just loved the one's who belong to me... does this explains anything to you?

  • They put this on Supernatural epic song >:)

  • I could ask you the same thing about Doctor Who. Explain. *Sits in chair and waits for response*

As for Dr. Stanley, his ancient voice exhorting Death to "spare him over for another year" is not meant for mere entertainment.

  • ... Why is this so loved?! Dont hate on me, but please. Explain. *Sits in chair and waits for reasponce*

  • @doctorwhoEPICFAN It's very musical and deep.

  • brb tissue

  • Greek Philosopher Epicurise's Thoughts on Death:

"It is irrational to fear an event, if when that event occurs, we are not in existence. And since, when death is, we are not. And when we are, death is not. Then it's irrational to fear death. One might just as well fear birth."

    93/93=93 Thelema.

  • Lovely !!!!

  • Ralph Stanley suits this song so well. with that haunting/ chilling voice I'd make a bee-line from that old man's bedside, out through the window as quickly as i could. LOL

  • Dr. Ralph Stanley, central florida loves you.

  • R.I.H. Bin Laden

    (rot in hell)

  • Sometimes it sits softly ,never revealing IT'S function. Then maybe a Tic a twitch ,A revelation that IT is near. IT is always angry with me,a twist ,a twirl,a clinch with a fist. Sometimes I smile ,IT has power how can I resist. Do I get to prepare, a soft bed or just a cold stare? Like a 1,000 anvils the weight, we try but the power is great. A BIG whoosh and a SLAM a reminder to beware. Angry growl, deafening howl, spit, blood, IT does not hide IT DOES NOT CARE!

  • amazing that hes got this good voice still at age 82! Guess singing all his life helps..

  • This is the BADDEST old man alive.... I only wished I could say he kicked my ass.....

  • goosebumps...

  • Am I surviving? What can I keep? what can I take?until we meet!IT" found me again, tears are cold?blood tastes sweet, sweat is hot,Ringing is LOUD in red ,purple,BRIGHT,pain is over there for now,I push IT pulls,I pull IT BREAKS!Broken I stand when I can,I...T DOES NOT OWN ME!I smiled and turned,IT won't show itself,it just likes to BURN ,vessels rippling down my spine,Is IT today? NO,NO WAY! a pill for the chill?a shot when ITS hot?so simple it seems? but IT'S not, vague, blind IT always stays LIFE

  • @BowToMySkill Thumbs down if the Black Panthers brought you here.

  • YOU STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM ME YA HEAR" Thanks I awoke suddenly 2.a.m.? pain? confusion? broken? Medication SUCKS I'd rather be an addict again.breathing color, feeling in reds and yellows, taste in silver like metal hearing ,blue gray, fading, I would like to SCREAM but then others will know, burning? cold?afraid to lay down ,haunting dreams, can only smile with eyes closed, pushing, pulling, from the inside,I am pissing "IT" off, clear but numb,a fishbowl, sleep while standing? HURT? NO, LIFE Rick

  • This version is alot less creepy :P

  • @tinytwin29

that depends on how you look at it / listen at it

  • wow his voice is still perfect, and I absolutely love this song

  • I was very Lucky in my younger days to have heard Him sing this in person. He used to pick and grin on his front porch on several occasions and we would go there and listen to him sing and watch the mason jar get passed around.

  • wont you spare me over, till another year? thank.... you...

  • Great!

  • God Bless Brother Ralph.....

  • doc boggs rules this song

  • Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley have the two most known voices in bluegrass. An amazing song

  • Sing it Uncle Ralph...

  • just GREAT !!!!!!!!!

  • Under the strangest circumstances, I got to meet him. I had no money, so I couldn't see the show in town. However, I followed his tour bus, with the last bit of gas in my car. He welcomed me, as he was standing outside.

Dr. Stanley...to me, is the ultimate of bluegrass. He's a very friendly man. I got to shake his hand, had a small chat, and got an autograph on one of his CD's I happened to have on hand. :) It's such a wonderful feeling to meet one of your idols.

  • this song is for a man trying to fight dying n thats what it meant in the story not racism n the lord heard his soul callin n let tommy boy live another day

  • this song gives me cold chills up my back

  • GREAT !!!!!

  • love this song

  • Paul said to live is Christ & to die is gain ! Ohhhhh Death ! Nothing in the World can compare to the Kingdom Of Heaven

  • wow, this video is truly gorgeous, love the sepia and the unusual angle...saw mr. stanley a few years back in prospect park in brooklyn, great show--a real artist and great performer who clearly cares about the music first

  • not just a song. goes a lot deeper.

  • we all die and we are all sharing this moment in history; try and be good to people whilst you can before we are gone.

  • the earth and worm both have a claim

  • i kinda wanna go back in time and blair this just before every human disaster takes place....

    hiroshima,earthquakes,the burning of rome,...etc

  • Am i wrong to say that dock boggs did this song originally? whether he's the first or not, his version bears a listen. this is amazing though.

  • creepy but cool lol

  • yeah this guys is awesome. i love to listen to him and so does the rest of my family

  • There are few artist who can make the human soul express itself like Stanley does

  • WOW, ...Dr. Ralph Stanley is an incredible person.

  • I agree with you and I'm an Atheist :)

  • Let be god be with you but i will respect your religion and not hate on it

  • I do not have a RELIGION because I am an Atheist. Christianity is a RELIGION. Atheism is lack of religion. However, I still do enjoy Ralph Stanley's music.

  • @MrGoodatheist I agree. I do not believe in God but I respect those who do. There is some beautiful religious music out there, like much of the "O Brother soundtrack. Very lovely.

  • Very well put. Some people misunderstand my disbelief in their god. It is not that I hate their god. I just don't believe. However, some of the music such as Ralph Stanley is wonderful music in it's own right and I do not have to believe in god in order to enjoy the music.

  • actually, atheism does not mean you dont believe in religion, it means you dont believe in deities. not the same thing.

  • That is an odd thing to say. Religion is the belief in a deity (for example Jesus and the RELIGION of Christianity.) Atheists have no religion.

  • @MrGoodatheist then what would you consider buddhism as they have no belief in any diety.

  • I don't ever listen to this music, but you got to recognize his amazing musical talent.

  • My favorite song and part of O'Brother Where Art Thou?

  • I'll pray for you...

  • granny used to sang this to us wen we wer keads used to skeer a hel oud a me.

  • @onetrickpony420 Its a dirge! Back home in Africa during funeral, Ive heard different version of the similar song in my native language which Im not very fluent. It always makes the intestines in my stomach chyme.

  • @onetrickpony420 BOY I TELL H'YOU WUT. I recon I know that thar feelin'. Skeer me steel. Yep.

  • @onetrickpony420 Try harder to talk country.

  • @onetrickpony420

WTF!?!? The pronunciation you tried to get out of your fabricated spelling is fail. Bogus!

Let me give it a shot...lol..

Granny used to sang dis here song to us when we was children. Be it that, it scared the hell out'a us. That's how I'd of heard it if my great elder's were around to tell a story like that today. No exaggerated/fabricated spelling to hear a southern voice through literature.

  • @onetrickpony420

a shame she didn't teach you to spell.. :-(

  • Oh man, this song gives me chills. I always thought it was great, then I just now looked up the lyrics and I realized it's better and scarier than I realized.

  • Sooner or later, Death comes for us all. Ralph Stanley's presentation of this song (with his singing style, his voice, & his age), really brings this sobering thought home.

  • Dr Stanley's haunting powerful presentation of his music is more creation than information giving us rapt audiences a hint of what is to come for all.

This man is a genius, a humanist, a lover of real life, not a believer in the god of Mammon. The sin isn't money or having money, it's the Love of Money.

  • I hate when people say i love this song and I'm only 13 or 14 who cares?

  • Good tunes is good tunes. It's a powerful, evocative song, sung by a man with an absolutely chilling voice.

  • now this is hardcore...

  • He has such an amazing voice! I love this song, and I'm only 14.

  • he's me great cousin

this song iz bout carter were having a reunion this summer

  • no-one could give as eriely as ralph.he sends chills.

  • great video; thank you!
