  • CORRECTION: I believe he means that 3rd, 4th and 5th nonmetal COLUMNS not PERIODS! Chlorine is 3rd period nonmetal BUT a 7th column nonmetal. I believe he means any element in the 3rd Column and beyond is a candidate for a resonance structure.

    The periods contain all sorts of elemental state. For instance, 3rd period contains metals (Na, Mg) AND nonmetals (B-F). If I am incorrect somehow, please inform me.

  • @thekshareefa09 Nope, he DOES mean 3rd, 4th and 5th PERIOD non-metal. The 3rd, 4th and 5th period non-metals have low energy d-orbbitals so they can accept lone pairs and expand their octet. Thus, they can participate in resonance.

  • @NarendranCYBERlite Cl is a 3rd period non-metal. It does have 7 electrons in its outer most shell.
