i dont know how often u be on here but, i got 2 questions. im a young black man, so whats the fastest way to make my hair grow? and also, is it a bad thing to perm hair? because alot of ppl say that perming my hair will damage it
u look really good, nice video, I recommend you a better flat iron which cause less damage, it's the Karmin G3 Salon Pro and it leaves the hair soft, shiny and very straight. :)
guess what i don't want to use a flat iron or either perm my hair so is there any ither way i could straight my hair. I heard you could with milk honey and bunch of stuff. What can you say about that.
guess what i don't want to use a flat iron or either perm my hair so is there any ither way i could straight my hair. I heard you could with milk honey and bunch of stuff. What can you say about that.
I absolutely love your hair....i recently did a big chop so i'm not sure what my hair type is right now i realize its pretty springy and full just like yours!
all these videos are interesting. I'm only 3 weeks post and I'm trying to figure out how to flat iron my hair with this chi flat iron without my head still looking stiff because of the roots LOL! I'm trying the twist out for the first time to see how that looks, but next week I will try your method. But I was told by somebody that I shouldn't moisturize my hair before I flat iron, so I stopped to see what it will do. To me stopping that is probably why my hair is not turning out so great :(
If you want a professional flat iron and you are ok with spending around $140 I would highly recommend the Karmin G3 Salon Pro, it heats up to 450f with temperature control, dual voltage, tourmaline ceramic plates with rounded edges which makes it great for also curling your hair. Also has a 3 year warranty. If you do look at other irons make sure to stay away from irons with painted plates (colored plates) these can damage your hair.
Thank you soooooo much!!!! I believe this is the way I'll be straightening my hair from now on!!!! I hate using the blow dryer and then the pressing comb/flat iron. My hair is crazy thick and it makes sense to wait a day after washing (with a braid out, etc) It is definitely more manageable!!! YOU ARE INSPIRING!!!
I was wondering if you're able to do your hair without putting anything in it, and without using a blowdryer. Unfortunately, I don't have one (and no one I know will let me borrow one...), I only have greece and pink moisturizer, hold spray, and that's it, can I get my hair straight with only these things. (I have a flat iron and a hot comb to work with though) Thanks in advance...
Why the hell would you want to straighten THAT hair?! its HAWT.. I LOVE IT!! actually makes me wish my hair was even curlier!! I think african hair should be EMBRACED.. its GORGEOUS.. ppl should work with what they have NATURALLY.. if I was black I would soo either have a normal afro/ curly spiraly afro or have my hair kinky and cute like she has in this clip.. or I'd have braids.. I avoid straightening my hair coz it doesnt straighten well.but wen I have it natural ppl always comment.. (4 gud)
@MasinaTai86 its something different...its jus like when we twist our hair or braid it...its a different style....sometimes you need to change your look but bc she loves her hair texture as much as she does she doesnt even straighten it once a year
Hi, I love your site, Please stop by my blog and shed some of your ideas, it's for all my girls caught in the tug of war b/t being natural & the 1B, 22in, this blog is for you:
your curl pattern only changes when it is chemically altered... heat only temporarily alters the protein arrangements in your hair. when you wash it the curl comes right back learned that in my biology class ^_^
@lameshiav Actually this is not entirely accurate. If the heat is too high the hair can be permanently straightened - aka heat damaged. Heat damaged hair will not revert back.
It would also be helpful if you let me know what products you use on your hair, I heard about the shea butter, but how about your shampoo and conditioner?
Hello, I love your hair, I am all natural as well I currently go to the hairdresser but I agree with you about the amount ot heat used on all natural hair. I am trying to minimize the amunt ot heat to my hair and I tried the two strand twists but the ends became frizzy after a few days. I was just wondering what product did you use to twist your hair? Also, How often do you flat iron your hair? do you have a video that walks through the twists step by step? I may have missed it
@alikaboiz I'm black and before I got perms to straighten my hair (like for bangs and stuff) My mom would use a hot comb. I don't know if they make any-anymore. But they worked for me I suppose. you can still get burned by them tho/
I started transitioning in 07 and had my bc in 08! I have seen a couple of your videos and they are the best Ive seen thus far. Your hair is beautiful and your methods make sense. I went to a Dominican hair shop and lost some of my curl pattern with the amount of heat they used and had to trim alot of my hair off! They blowdried and flatironedI will use your method next time. Thank you and please continue posting: )
thank god. my hair texture is just like yours. alot of shrinkage. once you straighten it out. its long. ive been natural for about 7, 8 years. im ready to let it grow out some more. thank you for the technique. blow drying with my hair last 2 hours top. thank you i really didnt want to use a relaxer or permanent. bless you sista
Lol, its perfectly fine to use. All it is is a very thick type of protein-rich conditioner. Good brands are Organic Root Stimulator and Africa Royal. They smell fresh/minty.
You can also an an egg to hair mayor or use real mayo, but you seem squeemish.
I usually blow dry, then flat iron, and then curl my hair. However, I am definitely putting this video in my favorites and trying this method the next time around!!!
I flat-iron bone straight, though. Love the glossy, light look. But y'know something? My kinks and curls pop back whenever the humidity hits it...or after a good hot shower. LOL What I need is a good humidity blocker.... I'll try this method though of not ironing bone straight...
Good tutorial. I agree with you on the blow-drying...I only wash, dc, put leavein on/small dab of chi silk/straight pearl from blended beauty and flat-iron. I heatstyle about once a month but I get a little antsy with all that blow-drying... Unlike you, my iron is STEAMING! I don't see how ya'll use all those cremes, though. That would weigh my hair down...it would look all gummy....
I know that the info. in my previous post sounds amazing & I realize that the alcohol in the holding spray makes hair dry (as it does skin), but it works & so does this technique you use in your video & it's a great alternative/addition to what I'm doing. Plus the curls are cute. I like the variety that's still achievable w/o relaxing & the hair doesn't suffer any from the heat of blow drying since the hair is air dried prior to straightening. Thanks again.
Thanks for posting this video, I like this technique as well. Seeing what works best for you is the best advice, too. My hair is similar to your texture & when my hair was relaxed I would spritz Suave non-aerosol hairspray on it & it worked really well, no build-up or anything. So,I decided to see how it would work now that it's been completely natural for 2 years & to my surprise in its airdryed twisted state it soaks in & automatically straightens from root to tip, w/out even flat ironing.
wouldn't it make more sense to add the coconut oil after you straighten it. Aren't you just frying the hair if you put oil on the hair and then flat ironing it.
@bmore1991 i've bn using coconut oil serum and its bn real dull when i straighten it and gone straw like.. so thanks for that comment.. i had a lightbulb moment LOL :S
well she did say that she would reccommend that we do the research to see if it would be the "best/safest" option for you. It's says so right below the video. I hope that kinda answers your question a little. I guess it would depend upon the "hair type" as well.
are you using natural shea butter? I use natural shea butter and I've always thought that the shea butter wouldn burn your hair if yyou flat iron your hair with the butter in it. ( like oil does when you flat iron your hair) I've been natural for 1 year. Have you ever seen any damage to your hair over time after flar ironing with shea butter? Did you wear any protective styles in order to maje your hair grow that long or did you wear it out most of the time?
Your hair looks great! This is much better than blow drying then using a flat iron. How long willl your hair stay straight before it starts to curl again? Also are there any products that you use to keep your hair from reacting quickly to the humidity? One more question... what ratio of coconut oil to Shea butter do you use? Thanks for reading!
I really prefer this method compared to blow drying and then flat iron. Just got the HAI convertable and I can't wait to try it out! Thanks a million on the tips!
Hey RusticBeauty. I would like to straighten my hair but I am terrified that I wont be able to go back natural again. I'm also nervous about damaging my hair. Although my hair is very thick it is not super kinky, I know if I flat ironed it it would be straight, but will it go back? Can you use a blow dryer with an attatchment for the same results? How long does that look last and if I wash my hair will it revert. Banging hair by the way.
Anything that involves heat will damage your hair. How much it damages it depends on the amount of heat you apply, if you use products or not on your hair and also your type of hair. For example, I can iron my hair once and nothing happen, but if I start ironing too many times during a month I will need to trim it sooner than I often do because the tips burn a little, but it is nothing drastic so don't worry.
Yes, your hair will go back to natural after you wash it (*sigh* I wish it didn't :P)
I'm glad you mention not blow drying the hair b/c I want flat iron but I do not want too many sessions of heat on my hair. Thanks for twist-strand and then flat iron tip. Makes more sense.
soo many people think that once you grow an afro you can never have straight hair again unless you use a relaxer. heck, i've had an afro for 2 years, and i just found out a few months ago. thanks for making these videos. inspirational and informational.
you r hair is.. AMAZING!! At the back of my head, my hair is a lot drier and kind of crispier than the hairs on the top of my head. They tend to snap off a lot more than the rest of my hair and are thinner. Is there anyway i could improve this?:)
they have some at whole foods ... its kinda expensive though ... 10 dollars but you get a big jar ... well i think its big :) it doesnt smell that great but when it dries you cant smell it ... hope i helped
Hey. You can go to an Indian grocery if your town has one. Search online for an indian grocery in your city . I got my tall 16 fl oz pure coconut oil from an Indian grocery for $3.99 which is a lot less than getting it from the whole food store like I use too.
Have you tried the instyler? Because I heard flat ironing is really damaging to your hair. Don't you think it would be safer to blow dry it out instead? if not.. why? Thank you!
flatironing is only damaging because people dont use the right products, enough heat protectants, or they set their flatiron unecissarily high. also some people go over one section of hair over 2 times with the flatiron. blow dries can damage hair too. if you have enough heat protectants in your hair, its conditioned enough, & the temperature is set reasonably on your flatiron then you really have nothing to worry about.
Hun you are gorgeous!!! Your videos have helped me with my natural hair so much. I always thought I was ugly because my hair was so thick and curly in its natural state but u have shown me I can do lots of things with my hair. thank you!!
In America, some Africian Amercian females are brain-washed from the myths and lies of other people telling them they're not pretty because of their kinky hair and they grow up relaxing their hair. Their daughters are born into the world where black women needs to straighten their hair in order to get a job and so they end up not knowing how to handle the natural kinky hair God given them. People needs to stop the funky myths about black hair and research for facts before they talk.
@Ladygaga937 yeah, black people's hair is beautiful and more interesting to look at and feel, don't believe me? Put an Indian woman with long hair down to her butt and have a white woman, an Asian woman, and a Spanish woman with the same hair length. Now get a black woman with long natural kinky 4a/4b/4c hair that's just as long as the other women and notice who's hair would be more impressive to see... I used to feel the same way as you on having kinky hair but Rustic Beauty helped change that
@chickitie34 I agree! Black hair can be silky straight and LONG but when it's in it's natural state it could be very beautiful and more captivating than any other hair texture!!
hmm.. i'll try that, then...my hair is to my shoulder/neckline. i'm going to wait until my birthday to straighten it. I've been naptural for 1 year and two months. I have never straightened my hair since...can't wait to see what it looks like.
Infusium 23 is a great leave-in conditioner to define your curls. Just dilute it with LOTSA water and put it in a spray bottle. I haven't had to twist or braid my hair when I put that in. My curls automatically just fall.
This is so great. I have natural hair (1 yr since my last relaxer). It's been so hard caring for my hair; I've basically given up. I was even (seriously) thinking about getting a textured, but this is such a GREAT alternative!!! Thank you SO much!! I'm pressing it out tomorrow!!! :)
when u straighten ur hair... how long does it last??? how often do u straigten it? my hair is natural too n idk if i shoud straiten it... my mom says it might get damaged
Ooh! Thank you for mentioning the notice about steam and smoke coming out of your iron. Ladies need to know...that does NOT mean your flatiron is working properly lol..it means you are burning your hair. xD
i dont know how often u be on here but, i got 2 questions. im a young black man, so whats the fastest way to make my hair grow? and also, is it a bad thing to perm hair? because alot of ppl say that perming my hair will damage it

SeerNubian 2 years ago
Anything that involves heat will damage your hair. How much it damages it depends on the amount of heat you apply, if you use products or not on your hair and also your type of hair. For example, I can iron my hair once and nothing happen, but if I start ironing too many times during a month I will need to trim it sooner than I often do because the tips burn a little, but it is nothing drastic so don't worry.
Yes, your hair will go back to natural after you wash it (*sigh* I wish it didn't :P)

soo many people think that once you grow an afro you can never have straight hair again unless you use a relaxer. heck, i've had an afro for 2 years, and i just found out a few months ago. thanks for making these videos. inspirational and informational.

you r hair is.. AMAZING!! At the back of my head, my hair is a lot drier and kind of crispier than the hairs on the top of my head. They tend to snap off a lot more than the rest of my hair and are thinner. Is there anyway i could improve this?:)

Don't you think it would be safer to blow dry it out instead? if not.. why? Thank you!
aida011 2 years ago
flatironing is only damaging because people dont use the right products, enough heat protectants, or they set their flatiron unecissarily high. also some people go over one section of hair over 2 times with the flatiron. blow dries can damage hair too. if you have enough heat protectants in your hair, its conditioned enough, & the temperature is set reasonably on your flatiron then you really have nothing to worry about.
soufwesthoustontx 2 years ago
don't blow dry your hair! it's more damaging. you can air dry and then flat iron.

@chickitie34 wow i always thought it was unfair that we have hard nappy hair but thanks
Ladygaga937 1 year ago
@Ladygaga937 yeah, black people's hair is beautiful and more interesting to look at and feel, don't believe me? Put an Indian woman with long hair down to her butt and have a white woman, an Asian woman, and a Spanish woman with the same hair length. Now get a black woman with long natural kinky 4a/4b/4c hair that's just as long as the other women and notice who's hair would be more impressive to see... I used to feel the same way as you on having kinky hair but Rustic Beauty helped change that

@chickitie34 i disagree, beautiful hair is beautiful hair, doesn't matter the ethnicity

hmm.. i'll try that, then...my hair is to my shoulder/neckline. i'm going to wait until my birthday to straighten it. I've been naptural for 1 year and two months. I have never straightened my hair since...can't wait to see what it looks like.

hey what is a nice diffuser to use to help define your curls
natashaj44 2 years ago
Infusium 23 is a great leave-in conditioner to define your curls. Just dilute it with LOTSA water and put it in a spray bottle. I haven't had to twist or braid my hair when I put that in. My curls automatically just fall.

This is so great. I have natural hair (1 yr since my last relaxer). It's been so hard caring for my hair; I've basically given up. I was even (seriously) thinking about getting a textured, but this is such a GREAT alternative!!! Thank you SO much!! I'm pressing it out tomorrow!!! :)

Ooh! Thank you for mentioning the notice about steam and smoke coming out of your iron. Ladies need to know...that does NOT mean your flatiron is working properly lol..it means you are burning your hair. xD
