you'd need crazy strong toes to climb in these wouldnt you? isn't the whole point of a climbing shoe is to jam your toes into a point allowing you to put more pressure on them? I doubt my pinky toe could hold me up in these like it can in a climbing shoe... mind you i havent seen vibrams for climbing yet. so yea. i'm probably wrong
@4726052 No, you're correct. We shot this clip two years ago right after I got my first pair of VFFs and wanted to try them. The Vibrams are not good for climbing. Climbing shoes are awesome for climbing. That said, if the route is very overhanging -- where your feet aren't supporting much of your bodyweight -- you can do some stuff in your VFFs. Say you're on a trail run and come across a bouldering problem you've been working, perhaps the VFFs would work.
although i see many benefits to running in VFFs, i see absolutely no benefit to wearing them climbing. i see this all the time at my local climbing gym and it's the worst thing you can do for your feet when climbing. VFFs allow your foot to splay and spread while running, which is the exact opposite thing you want from your toes when climbing. this is a FAIL if you ask me.
I got some of these, KSOs. Theyre coming in the mail tomorrow and i cant wait!! By the way i think the shoes are really cool looking, i dont see how they could ever look ugly.
i don't see the point of climbing with these, especially on an overhand. You might as well just climb barefoot if you're not gonna use climbing shoes. Nice "climbing gloves", lol, this guy looks like a real pro.
@karmadrug The VFF Sprints are light and handy enough to carry up with you and slip on while you're hanging out at the belay station. They make a pretty decent approach shoe generally unless it's cold.
Vibrams don't work well for rick climbing. I tried it once and the soles are just too thin to be comfortable if you're putting a lot of pressure on one foots on an awkward surface. Also after my climb, both shoes (KSOs) had holes on the seams right behind the big toe.
thanks for comment! It's actually an 11b, not d. There are jugs, but the route is super overhanging. Actually, there's an 11b move and the rest is probably 5.10 something. And I fell at the 11b move.
That said, on a route this overhanging, your feet are basically just for stabilizing and positioning. You could climb this one barefoot.
I was thinking about getting these shoes as opposed to conventional rock climbing shoes. Would you recommend that? I have slightly in grown toenails on both big toes so the narrow tip shoes hurt them. I also figured you could have more control as you could curl your toes and your your foot like another hand
Kinda, I guess. My hands are taped for cracks and jamming. Most people cut off the tape and throw it away at the end of the day, but I save and reuse. Been doing that for over a year, so they've kinda turned into climbing gloves.

skinnytallnsmart 1 year ago
@skinnytallnsmart They are the closest thing to barefoot, and guess what, we've been climbing barefoot for millions of years.
So why do we need "climbing shoes"?

Some gyms don't allow climbing barefoot.(I don't see why though) So this is a nice alternative.

@ljimeru greasing up foot holds with toe jam doesnt seem wise! haha

These are light and has good friction it also provides protection for rough surfaces, climbing barefooted might cut your legs.

if you can climb without your feet, it's not an eleven. Try like 8-9 max. even then it's doubtful unless you're sheer muscle.
Yes, i'm aware la sportiva uses vibram. Doesn't make routes harder.

I hate when people tell you what to grab and shit, they can't see what you see from the ground.
