The 1st Ammendment mentioned protections for religious speech to ensure freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion, as part of our freedom of speech. In others words, we are to be tolerant of all forms of speech, even if we don't agree....that's what a diverse and tolerant society does... If you want to see what the opposite viewpoint results in look at Nazi Germany or the Taliban controlled Afghanistan. It seems the only ones tolerated today are the intolerant.
While I won't get into the debate on whether or not she should have been allowed to talk about her religion, I will say that it is my understanding that it was understood that she wasn't allowed to mention it in her speech. She broke the rules, so she honestly should have expected this to happen.
To tell you the truth, she was trying to proselytize. Proselytizing in a public school ceremony is unconstitutional. If she wants to preach, then she can go do it in church and not in a public ceremony. The school did the right thing to cut her microphone off when she started proselytizing and preaching.
@NightGuardianAngel its unconstitutional if the SCHOOL is proselytizing, not the student who is free to speak as she pleases
if anything, the school is unconstitutional for taking away her most basic right, freedom of speech. she was just explaining how God influenced her life and success
That is because the non-Christian religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, or the many Earth-centered religions are more palatable to politically correct governments than Biblical Christianity. So while Buddhists are cramming their religion down others' throats in the public schools without censorship, Christians are being censored for expressing their Faith in Jesus Christ.
No one sane wants to hear her shit anyway, let's be honest. Must be an easy school if a zealous nut can be valedictorian. Nevada is pretty stupid though.
This is seriously fucking ridiculous. Would a crowd cheer on an Atheist for incorporating their beliefs into a speech? Hell no. People are so fucking obnoxious. You shouldn't be able to shove religion, whatever it may be, down people's throat.
I would probably be rude and just get up and leave on the first mentioning of "god". You may have your freedom of speech, but you can't force others to listen to the message you are trying to deliver. Freedom of speech never guaranteed the person to have an audience.
All I can say is this. I believe in God the father and his son Jesus Christ and I'll my testemony of the love of God with anyone I want . Its my freedom to do so. You can believe what you want but don't come crying to us christians when Jesus comes back. If Christ comes back I win and you loose. If he doesn't come back you and I you win and I still loose nothing. At least I have a higher chance of winning the game huh. I think my odds of 100/100 are better then your 50/50 odds
This is what people want. I believe in God but I know that we all have free will. If you choose to not share my beliefs, then go right ahead. But to tell me how I should think is exactly what our forefathers did not want. It's going to get to a point where we'll get detention for mention God.
Should valedictorian speeches really be exploited as opportunities for plugging Christianity or any belief system? I know this may seem hard for many of you to believe but it is possible to get through high school WITHOUT the Christian god and millions of teens throughout the U.S. do just that each and every year! Valedictorian speeches should be inclusive, but when the success of the graduating class is ascribed to the "Christian god" the speech then devolves to exclusive crap!
@SickMouth Its ignorant people like you that don't know what the laws mean that ruin this country. The sereration of church and state is that I government can not force a relgion on you (like they did in England) and that a religion can't force certain people in to a government office. Get your facts straight SickMouth
@SickMouth Ohhhh no its not...You better study the law..The law only says a school can't force regligion. In fact a school can offer it as a free choice but can not make it a manatory subject. If I were the person that they did that to I would get the ACLJ after the school and would win the case. Oh and are you telling me that its ok for the schools to shove the koran down a students throat and teach them to do muslim prayers but you can't have a Bible, Pray or mention God.
This girl did the right thing. "Heck, if you won't let me give MY speech, give me my diploma and you won't have a valedictorian speech." She's stll valedictorian AND an awesome witness for God. And the silly people who cut off her mic only made it MORE of an impact than if she had finished her speech. I'm reminded in Acts, Saul WATCHED and consented as Stephen was stoned to death for preaching Christ to the Jews. That impacted his conversion; named changed to Paul, and he led many TO Christ.
@nosajj12345: I can't believe you just asked that. How will you know whether or not a person WANTS to be led to Christ until you present why one NEEDS to? I mean I understand your question, but it doesn't make sense, because you WON'T know that unless you present it FIRST. We're not MAKING you accept Jesus Christ. We're presenting the Gospel as the Lord says to. It's your choice. But the ONLY choice for Heaven (and not eternal torment) is accepting Jesus. Thanks for responding.
@TheLazyMusician0 You may not have ended their speech but the point remains the same. The ceremony is paid for by the state via taxes. The state cannot pay for a pulpit for ANY religious viewpoint. If the court decided in her favor it would set a precedent allowing ANY religious view to be preached at ANY state funded graduation ceremony. It is simply best to keep high school graduation speeches about high school.
@TheLazyMusician0 And how would you feel if a muslim gave a graduation speech preaching Islam? Or a Jew, Wiccan, Hindu, or any other religious group? What if an Atheist got up there and started rambling on about how there is no god? It's easy to get pissed about someone with your same viewpoint getting "persecuted" but people like you fail to think about the broader picture. Bottom line, its a tax payer funded event and the people attending shouldn't be lectured about a god OR lack there of.
SERVES HER RIGHT. A graduation speech should be about getting through high school, not shoving your beliefs down our throats. If I went up and made a speech about how there is NO God, would I be able to speak? I really don't think so. So why should she get to talk about her religion? This is ridiculous.
As an atheist I started rolling my eyes when she started in with the Jesus died for me crap. But, I don't think that her talking was going against the separation of church and state because she wasn't acting as an employee or representative of the school. Of coarse Christians will continue to think they are being persecuted, but I wonder what would happen if a Valedictorian stood up there and made a speech about how there is no God?
@UnchainTheNight1 I would defend her freedom of speech. Not because it's a faith issue, but because it's her freedom of speech. Everyone is entitled to it!
i'm a Filipino and in our history america brings Christianity in our country during battle against Spaniards. My only point is that a true american believes in God .
@redsoxown34 Even if he doesn't exist (and I believe he does), the school had no right to mute her. She earned the right to her Valedictorian speech, in which, she was most likely told to speak about her inspirations experiences and encouragement throughout her schooling. The first amendment gives everyone freedom of speech. It gives this girl every bit as much a right to speak about God, as it gives you to bash God, and this girl. Moron.
you gotta learn that public schools CAN'T talk pro religion you stupid ignorant wanker... she can use her first amendment outside of the public school.
@91lilfrozone23 She can use her first amendment right inside the public school too. Those rights aren't revocable. Go study the Constitution and what it means. The Constitution protects ANYONE talking about ANYTHING so long as they're not spewing hate at someone else. The Constitution protects Muslims, Atheists, Agnostics, Jews, Christians, Bhuddists, Ignorant fools on YouTube, and anyone else who has something to say, in or outside of the public school.
@91lilfrozone23 The problem is, there are idiots who exclude Christians from that right. Had an atheist gone up to give her speech about how she didn't believe in God, and how her disbelief helped her through her schooling, they'd never have pulled the plug. In fact, they probably would've applauded her boldness. There's no reason for you to call me a 'stupid ignorant wanker' when you don't know your Constitutional rights well enough to know when they're being violated.
it's a tax payed event. therefore you CAN NOT reinforce religious beliefs during it. she wasn't talking about religion, she was preaching christianity. there's a fine line between talking about religion, and preaching your religion. she crossed the line and she got what she deserved. c'mmon dude, she got cut off until she started saying her shit about "god's love is x, y and z. god gave his only son for you...".
@91lilfrozone23 Even being a tax payed event, a person's rights CAN NOT be revoked! There is ONE circumstance written into the Constitution where a person's right to free speech may be revoked, and that's if there is a hate crime involved! Anything else is unlawful!
@91lilfrozone23 I'm not biased, nor am I uneducated. I've had enough of an education to know how to spell and speak properly, unlike some people. I've had enough of an education to conduct a logical argument, and not spew filth at my opponents. And you call me a Christian like it's a derogative name. I'm proud to be a Christian, proud to be saved by my Father in Heaven, Who also endowed the idea of a FREE nation with RIGHTS to our founding fathers - who were mostly Christians.
lol classic yankee argument "proud to be saved my father in heaven who also endowed the idea of a free nation with rights to OUR founding fathers". christians are so egocentrical they believe god should only bless "america" (which is actually united states because america is a CONTINENT (go guess uneducated yanks)). and my english might not be perfect, but at least i talk three languages asshole :D
and ok, maybe you received an education. that doesn't change the fact that you're a brain-washed sheep. if you watch at the EVIDENCE we have thanks to scientists with an objective point of view, and yet you still choose to believe in christianity; i can't feel any respect for some one like that. if you've just been indoctrinated and haven't challenge religion, i please ask you to do that right now. if you're gonna still believe in fairy tales after that, that's on you..
@91lilfrozone23 See... That's the problem. I was indoctrinated to believe what you believe. And I challenged that and found a God who loves me for who I am... I can't give that up.
i'm an atheist. my brother is agnostic, and i respect agnostics. what i don't respect are fools that can't see all those incoherences that the bible has. the christian god is a lie. jesus never existed, no respected historian ever recorded him. earth wasn't created 10,000 years ago. i got no idea if there's a god or not, i think there's not; but believing in a religious god (your case jehova) is the biggest curse humanity has.
if you're that proud of being a christian i see noting you could hide or embarass you or something that's too personal a bout yoru relationship with jehova? you can always pm me if you wanna take this there though
yeah, that other girl had more of a right to speak than brittany? yeah! right!!! i wish she would finish it online, i really want to know what she had to say.
As a christian looking online for speeches to use as examples, hers seemed like it was going to be the best, and they just cut it off...? I suppose it is another sign of persecution against Jesus, and christians in general.
Though, I believe that this was just plain cruel of them. This speech was going to be the FINAL way everyone was going to remember her, and I know that I would have personally felt pretty bad after something like that.
for example the constitution doesnt mention seatbelts, but in my pursuit of happiness i find it more comfortable to not wear one. me not wearing wearing one doesnt take away anyone elses rights and yet my states tells me that if i dont wear one they will take away my privilege to drive
there are limits on free speech. we know this because the fcc exists. and one of the limits on free speech is to speak of a subject that the people hosting the event have already forbid. i am not a christian, but i dont think its right that they told her they she couldnt talk about god. but the fact is that they did and she didnt care. she didnt earn the RIGHT to give the speech, regardless of what her speech contained. she earned the privilege and privileges can be taken away.
Legally, she -can- say what she wants. School officials can't, but supreme court rulings have so far ruled that the government cannot interfere with student free speech. Schools can only interfere in cases where it interferes with learning or would be socially inappropriate in all cases (such as swearing). Some states have guidelines about students leading sectarian led prayers (which this is not).
@PersephonesFear (continuation of other post) s; it is in the setting in which she says it that the problem arises. This is certainly sectarian, the bible verse she chose to begin quoting implies that all non-christians are damned to eternal hellfire. Again, out of this context she has every right to say what she said. And this does not even address the fact that her speech was a privelidge granted her by the school so they have a right to censor it.
I dont think it really matters whether she felt it was her right to free speech or not. They told her she couldnt do it and she must have agreed otherwise she wouldnt have been able to get in front of the mic to begin with. ", all based upon her religious belief and viewpoint". it wasnt against HER religious belief. its the sheer fact that she included ANY religious belief. I think its safe to say that if she mentioned how satan helped her the crown wouldnt have been on here side.
I've been watching graduation speeches for hours now trying to find ideas for mine, and even though every other one claims to be "the best ever," THIS is the best. This is awesome, and I wish we could hear the rest of her testimony. It's sad to think that if she had gone on to say that friends filled the void in her life, everyone would've been okay with it, but when she bring in God, the ULTIMATE friend, she gets censored. It is heartwarming to see the crowd on her side, though!
Atleast it is not another photocopied kid who studies all day, and does nothing else. Glad to see someone other than a kid who kisses ass all day in school
@BSQ4life Your first, and worst, mistake is to assume that if a school's requirements are easy, then the school must not be very good. It has nothing to do with the school. It has to do with the student. I would do a 6-week book report in 6 hours, including reading the book. Does this have anything to do with the school? No. It has everything to do with me. If you find simple to be difficult, then that's your problem. It was never mine.
I'm an secular humanist (atheist) myself, and I find it very, very annoying when valedictorians try to say that everything they've done has been because of god. Tell me, was it god who did all that homework and studing? No, it was you, and you deserve the credit, not your imaginary friend. I am top of my class and will be valedictorian myself, but you will NOT see me give a speech about how wonderful atheism is. Honestly, a school function is just not the time or place for such things.
@MartialArtsPassion Yes, indeed you did do the work, but some people look for religion in general for motivation. Personally, I do not look for religion to do my work but instead my friends..but this is her chance to give out her input and enjoy her moment. I don't think anyone should take that away.
@cosg9531 In the larger scheme of things yes, being valedictorian is meaningless. However, colleges tend to favor the title when giving out scholarships.
@MartialArtsPassion While simplified for speeches, giving God the credit usually refers to both work ethic learned from advice in the Bible, work ethic learned from following God, wisdom from the Holy Spirit, character grown from God's discipline, and emotional support from a relationship with Christ. I skipped tenth grade via college courses, was my highschool valedictorian, and was harassed by many fellow classmates throughout. I relied on God to shape my character and course.
@PersephonesFear so in other words, you're giving God credit for all of those things you did which could have been done without any reference to religion whatever? I'm not attacking you, I'm just showing you how this looks to someone outside of your faith. There is no need for reference to religion in such a forum and it is strictly forbidden by our Founding Fathers' interpretation of the first amendment. Thomas Jefferson's writings make that very clear. I'm not against saying any of those thing
@capereyda Thomas Jefferson did not 'forbid' any such thing. His letter to the Danbury Baptists mentioning 'erecting a wall between church and state' was promising them that he would work to retore THEIR liberties, which the government had decided was a gift of 'legistlation', not rights.
Also: htt p://candst.tripod.com/tnppage/basic4a. htm (All recorded debate on the 1st amendment in the house.) Lastly, laws binding 'congress' did not apply to 'states' until the mid 20th century.
Regarding Valedictorians, being #1 in a group of 400 (or whatever number) average people doesn't amount to much. It doesn't require much to do better than a group of average people. It doesn't even require much to do better than a group of above-average people. Anyone who believes that you actually have to work hard to do well, or be #1, in any high school is either utterly delusional, or so dead-average that they do.
@cosg9531 So you are telling me to be valedictorian and maintain a 4.0 GPA at the 10th most prestigious high school in America where the average GPA is 3.7, I didn't have to work hard? Why don't you tell that to the long nights and wasted vacations I spent working...hard.
@ItsZackk The word "prestigious" and the term "high school" should never appear together in any context. If, however, they did, how might one measure "prestige" among high schools, and who would determine the schools' order in "level of prestige"? Just how, precisely, might that be undertaken, and would assignments regarding "level of prestige" be accepted by all involved? It just sounds more ridiculous as you go along, doesn't it? High school, any high school, is a joke. Do get serious.
@cosg9531 Well I think the fact that 70% of our teachers have graduated from an Ivy legue school and 20% of them have doctorates in their subjects. Not to mention it has one of the largest libraries in Massachusetts and its science hall is one of the most advanced, no big deal. Besides, if people didn't have to work hard to be the best in their class, why don't we hundreds of geniuses running around America?
She's so full of herself. Apparently she has some kind of a martyr-complex. Public school is not the place for religious sermons -- she's intelligent enough to discern that.
@BSQ4life Noone with half a brain has to work even hard, let alone tremendously hard, to do anything in high school. It's high school. Any turd who is still breathing graduates. Do get serious.
I think it is very inconvenient to proclaim that god is the reason for her success in school. That's the same as to argue for all the poverty in the world is a work of satan, which is wrong. Religious personal beliefs does not fit into a valedictorian speech. If you guys still rest your case about that, I suggest we can also let a nazi or racist wave their flag.
that was completely unexceptable and beyond disrespectful...I personally cant believe how they cut her off mid speech...i would have felt embarrassed of what just occured..people in school administration are a bunch of mindless idiots who dont give a fuck about are students...thats the reason why kids in this country arnt getting the quality of education they deserve..
she doens't have a constitutional right to a microphone, particularly if its a public school. why would not allowing a religiously biased speech 'violate' her'?
I think that if she learned her damn spot they should let her say whatever the hell she wants. She was a brave girl and I greatly admire and respect her.
what? She got cut off for preaching christianity at a secular, tax payer funded event? How shocking... Must be a liberal conspiracy to assassinate jesus. I bet NPR is behind it.
@PascalsFolly the proper response to this would be 'What? Her first amendment right was violated? The school had no right to do that! There was no valid reason to do that whatsoever!' Must be Christians being oversensitive. Oh wait, no..... No, not really. If you were cut off giving your Valedictorian about how ___insert whatever you want here, you'd be pissed.
although i am a christian, and i believe in telling others about God, i don't believe in shoving God down the throats of others. it's important to not show animosity to ppl of different faiths but to understnad where they come from. i don't think the "Christians" shoving God down the throats of Atheists and Agnostics are going to make them believe any more in God. as for the girl, i'm not sure if she should've been censored in that manner.
GOD IS REAL. WHY DO ATHEISTS STILL USE FAITH?? HAHA. BECAUSE WE'RE MADE FOR FAITH, BELIEF IN GOD IS WHAT IT'S FOR. ATHEISM IS FAITH-BASED. WHO'S THE TRUE HYPOCRITE? I'M NOT SAYING ALL CHRISTIANS ARE PERFECT BECAUSE NO ONE IS. BUT THE DEVIL WAS AT WORK ON THIS DAY AND HE'S AT WORK EVERYDAY IN THE LIFE OF EVERY MAN. GOD BLESS THE ENTIRE WORLD!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I LOVE GOOGLE! This deceitful bitch is the ultimate example of the ilk of people of her religion. Fortunately, through Googling her, anyone can find out what an untruthful, obnoxious person she is when she sends an employment application or resume. She'd never get a job at my firm. First because of her fanaticism, second because she is a fraud monger and a liar.
@cdesq1 so her expressing her opinion on her success makes her a bitch? your'e a real hypocrite right now. all beause many YOU don't believe in God or whatever, you think she's a bitch.. she's expressing her opinions just like you are right now. so i suggest you keep this rude comment to yourself. no one wants to read it.
First off: it was wrong to censor her. No, not just wrong, but ten times more offensive than her speech could have been if she ended it by calling for the prosecution of witches and heretics.
Yet I also find that her choice of a subject was... shall we say, unwise? Honestly, as a Non-Christian, I wouldn't want this to be my graduation speech, anymore than Ms. McComb would have liked to hear a speech on the merits of Buddhism, or Krishna, or the Qur'an.
Freedom of religion - what happened to it? Just because people can refuse to accept religion doesn't mean people can not accept religion at all. As a Christian, I don't care if it's Islam, Christianity, or anything else - we are in America and we have a right to proclaim who we are! very courageous speech.
Even as an atheist, this disgusts me. So much for the freedom of religion and speech! As a fellow valedictorian, I admire her courage and audacity to continue on with the original text! Never let anyone take away your rights!
So much for freedom of religion. Even as an atheist, this disgusts me. I am also a valedictorian; I graduate in 2011. I can personally attest that this speech is immensely important to the student giving it. To censor this is wrong. If they had a problem with these types of things, they should revise the speeches before they are given.
If the girl was driven to academic success by her faith, she was driven to academic success by her faith. What was she supposed to do? Lie?
Ok, that's not really appropriate for a high school graduation speech, no more than if I had given mine about how my skepticism towards religion made me the great thinker that led to my academic success, but censorship wasn't necessary.
Mockery and ridicule could easily have been reserved for the post show. ;)
@bugnvdub in my opinion she wasn't evangelizing. she had a right to let it be known what helped her get through high school and what stayed with her heart just as many other teenagers did in their speeches. friends and partying may have helped others, god helped her. bottom line
Evangelism refers to the practice of relaying information about a particular set of beliefs to others who do not hold those beliefs. That's the definition. Apparently you didn't know that. Not everyone is a Christian. That's why this belongs in a church setting, not a graduation. And if she "has the right", why was she cut off??? Oh yeah, because it's not appropriate.
@bugnvdub mmm. i understand what you're saying. i suppose only she knows if her motive was to evangelize or just speak her heart.
i mean i wasn't saying that it was ok for her to break school guidelines and do this, but i am saying that she has as much freedom of speech as another person that makes a graduation speech does.
This isn't really about censorship. For one thing, she broke the rules by ignoring the school, and giving the original version of her speech after it didn't get approval from the school district. But even more than that, this kind of speech is really inappropriate for a graduation. Sure, my freedom of speech would allow me to wax poetic about unicorns' positive influence on my life, but that doesn't make it appropriate for a school graduation.
I am an atheist and I will tell you that everything she was saying about god is downright laughable. However, I will also tell you she had every right to say it. She earned her time up there and if she wanted to she could use it to talk about the aliens she visits every night up on Mars. This kind of censorship is reprehensible. I've always wondered about those brown smears on the Constitution.
I would accept anybody of a religion other than my own to make their own statements when they are doing their graduation speech, whether the speech involves religion or not.
Graduation speeches are supposed to represent the beliefs of the student speaking... they don't necessarily reflect upon the ideals, or religious beliefs, of the entire student body.
I am disappointed that the Supreme Court rejected this suit.
@Clemsonfan151 She wasn't focusing on herself, she was trying to spread the gospel to her classmates and that being her last day of high school she had the perfect opportunity! God will use anyone, anywhere. There is no limit to what or who He will and can use.
it was her freedom of speech, and her right to say whatever because she earned this. I cant believe they would cut it off like that. Unacceptable. But knowing someone attempted to share the gospel even being shut down like that is so inspiring.
hmmm, so i guess freedom of speech means the freedom to talk about everythinggg but God?! that is so wrong. She earned that speech and it's a shame they took it away from her! i mean i know not everyone believes in God, but no matter who it is up there they should be able to say what they want! i understand not everyone wants to hear it, but if a Buddist got up there and started thanking Buddah I wouldnt be sitting in the crowd getting all mad or hoping they turn off the mic....
While I don't think she should have been censored, I don't agree with her choice to provide her testimony here. I certainly wouldn't shy away from talking about God's role in her life, but to basically launch into a mini sermon... that's a little bit much.
I believe that censoring this speech for reasons such as religion is wrong. It is no matter if the speaker be Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, or Wiccan - or whether the speech praises God or takes a stab at God. The real matter is about freedom of speech, and I know all people - regardless of beliefs - deserve this liberty.
Imagine a world without freedom of speech, where censorship overrides all... the thought is pretty scary.
@jedi4Iife I agree with your argument in the way in which you presented it; however, this is simply not the reason for the censorship of the speech. It was censored because this is a PUBLIC school, funded by the government, which may not support or condemn any particular religion in any way. It is offensive to any non-christian, in particular because of the verse she chose to quote... John 3:16. What it implies is that if you aren't christian you will burn in hell.
I believe in freedom of speech, but i dont want to listen to religious banter at school. IT'S SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE! Sorry, I side with the school here. PS: Too many religions with only one god, don't need another savior.
Booo, boooooo! We want self-validation for our asinine beliefs!!! Bring the preacher-girl back on!

To tell you the truth, she was trying to proselytize. Proselytizing in a public school ceremony is unconstitutional. If she wants to preach, then she can go do it in church and not in a public ceremony. The school did the right thing to cut her microphone off when she started proselytizing and preaching.
NightGuardianAngel 3 months ago

I am a Bible-believing Christian as well.

@littlebitsouthern OH, so this girl isn't shoving religion down other people's throats?? She goes to a PUBLIC SCHOOL. It's ILLEGAL. Dumbass.
SickMouth 6 months ago
@SickMouth Ohhhh no its not...You better study the law..The law only says a school can't force regligion. In fact a school can offer it as a free choice but can not make it a manatory subject. If I were the person that they did that to I would get the ACLJ after the school and would win the case. Oh and are you telling me that its ok for the schools to shove the koran down a students throat and teach them to do muslim prayers but you can't have a Bible, Pray or mention God.
littlebitsouthern 6 months ago
This girl did the right thing. "Heck, if you won't let me give MY speech, give me my diploma and you won't have a valedictorian speech." She's stll valedictorian AND an awesome witness for God. And the silly people who cut off her mic only made it MORE of an impact than if she had finished her speech. I'm reminded in Acts, Saul WATCHED and consented as Stephen was stoned to death for preaching Christ to the Jews. That impacted his conversion; named changed to Paul, and he led many TO Christ.

@pleonrhyme Did you ever stop to think that perhaps there are many who DON'T want to be led to Christ.
Your homework assignment for tonight is to lookup 3 words:
1. consideration

nosajj12345 7 months ago
@nosajj12345: I can't believe you just asked that. How will you know whether or not a person WANTS to be led to Christ until you present why one NEEDS to? I mean I understand your question, but it doesn't make sense, because you WON'T know that unless you present it FIRST. We're not MAKING you accept Jesus Christ. We're presenting the Gospel as the Lord says to. It's your choice. But the ONLY choice for Heaven (and not eternal torment) is accepting Jesus. Thanks for responding.
pleonrhyme 7 months ago
@TheLazyMusician0 You may not have ended their speech but the point remains the same. The ceremony is paid for by the state via taxes. The state cannot pay for a pulpit for ANY religious viewpoint. If the court decided in her favor it would set a precedent allowing ANY religious view to be preached at ANY state funded graduation ceremony. It is simply best to keep high school graduation speeches about high school.
PascalsFolly 7 months ago
@TheLazyMusician0 And how would you feel if a muslim gave a graduation speech preaching Islam? Or a Jew, Wiccan, Hindu, or any other religious group? What if an Atheist got up there and started rambling on about how there is no god? It's easy to get pissed about someone with your same viewpoint getting "persecuted" but people like you fail to think about the broader picture. Bottom line, its a tax payer funded event and the people attending shouldn't be lectured about a god OR lack there of.
PascalsFolly 7 months ago

@redsoxown34 Even if he doesn't exist (and I believe he does), the school had no right to mute her. She earned the right to her Valedictorian speech, in which, she was most likely told to speak about her inspirations experiences and encouragement throughout her schooling. The first amendment gives everyone freedom of speech. It gives this girl every bit as much a right to speak about God, as it gives you to bash God, and this girl. Moron.

@Planez4meh
you gotta learn that public schools CAN'T talk pro religion you stupid ignorant wanker... she can use her first amendment outside of the public school.
91lilfrozone23 7 months ago
@91lilfrozone23 She can use her first amendment right inside the public school too. Those rights aren't revocable. Go study the Constitution and what it means. The Constitution protects ANYONE talking about ANYTHING so long as they're not spewing hate at someone else. The Constitution protects Muslims, Atheists, Agnostics, Jews, Christians, Bhuddists, Ignorant fools on YouTube, and anyone else who has something to say, in or outside of the public school.
Planez4meh 7 months ago
@91lilfrozone23 The problem is, there are idiots who exclude Christians from that right. Had an atheist gone up to give her speech about how she didn't believe in God, and how her disbelief helped her through her schooling, they'd never have pulled the plug. In fact, they probably would've applauded her boldness. There's no reason for you to call me a 'stupid ignorant wanker' when you don't know your Constitutional rights well enough to know when they're being violated.
Planez4meh 7 months ago
@Planez4meh
it's a tax payed event. therefore you CAN NOT reinforce religious beliefs during it. she wasn't talking about religion, she was preaching christianity. there's a fine line between talking about religion, and preaching your religion. she crossed the line and she got what she deserved. c'mmon dude, she got cut off until she started saying her shit about "god's love is x, y and z. god gave his only son for you...".
I APPLAUD THE SCHOOL BOARD FOR DOING THIS
91lilfrozone23 7 months ago
@91lilfrozone23 Even being a tax payed event, a person's rights CAN NOT be revoked! There is ONE circumstance written into the Constitution where a person's right to free speech may be revoked, and that's if there is a hate crime involved! Anything else is unlawful!

PersephonesFear 8 months ago

MartialArtsPassion 8 months ago
@MartialArtsPassion Yes, indeed you did do the work, but some people look for religion in general for motivation. Kevinvknguyen 8 months ago
@MartialArtsPassion Being valedictorian is meaningless. You just haven't figured the bullshit out yet.
cosg9531 8 months ago
@cosg9531 In the larger scheme of things yes, being valedictorian is meaningless. However, colleges tend to favor the title when giving out scholarships.
MartialArtsPassion 8 months ago
@MartialArtsPassion While simplified for speeches, giving God the credit usually refers to both work ethic learned from advice in the Bible, work ethic learned from following God, wisdom from the Holy Spirit, character grown from God's discipline, and emotional support from a relationship with Christ. I skipped tenth grade via college courses, was my highschool valedictorian, and was harassed by many fellow classmates throughout. I relied on God to shape my character and course.
PersephonesFear 8 months ago
@PersephonesFear so in other words, you're giving God credit for all of those things you did which could have been done without any reference to religion whatever? I'm not attacking you, I'm just showing you how this looks to someone outside of your faith. There is no need for reference to religion in such a forum and it is strictly forbidden by our Founding Fathers' interpretation of the first amendment. Thomas Jefferson's writings make that very clear. I'm not against saying any of those thing
capereyda 8 months ago

Anyone who believes that you actually have to work hard to do well, or be #1, in any high school is either utterly delusional, or so dead-average that they do.
cosg9531 8 months ago
@cosg9531 So you are telling me to be valedictorian and maintain a 4.0 GPA at the 10th most prestigious high school in America where the average GPA is 3.7, I didn't have to work hard? Why don't you tell that to the long nights and wasted vacations I spent working...hard.
ItsZackk 8 months ago
@ItsZackk The word "prestigious" and the term "high school" should never appear together in any context. If, however, they did, how might one measure "prestige" among high schools, and who would determine the schools' order in "level of prestige"? Just how, precisely, might that be undertaken, and would assignments regarding "level of prestige" be accepted by all involved? It just sounds more ridiculous as you go along, doesn't it? High school, any high school, is a joke. Do get serious.

She didn't mention MY gawd!! That bitch!

She deserves to be mocked and ridiculed not censored.
Go christfags! for standing up against censorship.

Although I am a Christian, I do not think she chose the right setting to talk about her relationship with God.
A valedictorian speech should not focus on an individual.

@Clemsonfan151 She wasn't focusing on herself, she was trying to spread the gospel to her classmates and that being her last day of high school she had the perfect opportunity! God will use anyone, anywhere. There is no limit to what or who He will and can use.
Melyohhbabyy 1 year ago 2
it was her freedom of speech, and her right to say whatever because she earned this. I cant believe they would cut it off like that. Unacceptable. But knowing someone attempted to share the gospel even being shut down like that is so inspiring.

this is horrible why is it bad to speak about God what has this world come to
heatherhkp 1 year ago
...i might not believe it but oh well, whoever is up there has the right to talk and thats that!
christathebest94 1 year ago
hmmm, so i guess freedom of speech means the freedom to talk about everythinggg but God?! that is so wrong. She earned that speech and it's a shame they took it away from her! i mean i know not everyone believes in God, but no matter who it is up there they should be able to say what they want! i understand not everyone wants to hear it, but if a Buddist got up there and started thanking Buddah I wouldnt be sitting in the crowd getting all mad or hoping they turn off the mic....

at least let her have freedom of speech and to practice religion freely

I believe in freedom of speech, but it's basically about respect and tolerance from all sides.
jedi4Iife 1 year ago
