Purists and detractors keep pointing out that Caballe lacked the highest notes, but what of it ? She was an amazing opera singer who sang so many roles with terrific success. She was an incredible Salome, Tosca, Aida, Isolde not to mention her masterful bel canto: Norma, Bolena, Stuarda, Deveraux, Lucrezia, Pirata, and her early Mozart: Elvira, Anna. What a Heaven-sent soprano she was. This Norma is one of the greatest in 20th century operatic history, equal to Callas

@dngirmeriil1 Well said... there are detractors of course. However, in my humble opinion, this resentment is born from the vanity of other mediocrity. Yes you cant get better than this! I send my kind and warm regards my friend in music.
This is truly magnificently sung! There are a few things you need to remember about sopranos: a diva may be in excellent voice for Thursday's performance and then be disappointing in the same role on Saturday. There are other videos of Montserrat Caballe on YT singing the same aria but not with the same ease, consummate artistry, and control. Music fans, both popular and classical, are often obsessed with who is THE BEST. There is no "best", only good nights, bad nights, and personal faves.

Seriously, if anyone can think of more beautiful singing than the B flat diminuendo to a pianissamo on the last 'Tu Fai" (5:55) then they clearly know nothing about singing.
There were 2 Norma's - Callas and Caballe. That's where it began and ended. I almost vomited when I was told Fleming is scheduled to do it at the Met in 2010.
You'll have to wait a very long time, she cancelled all of them. The world has been spared yet another operatic travesty- she's completely incapable of singing Norma. Tonally her voice is quite nice, but stylistically she's confused, and has some strange mannerisms. She's a lovely person, and it's a shame she doesn't stay within the appropriate repertory for her voice type.
Hi! I agree with the "strange mannerisms" comment, but I think she could pull it off; just listen to Fleming's rendition of Casta Diva in the Midsummer night's dream soundtrack... just unbelievable.
BTW, I love Caballe, I think she is the best Norma... yet.
BTW, I love Caballe, I think she is the best Norma... yet.

She's a not "Bel Canto" soprano. She may be capable at times of singing some Bel Canto roles, or arias, but she's not a Bel Canto singer. As lovely tonally as her voice is, it doesn't have the required skills, and she's got too many mannerisms and quirks stylistically.
U shouldn't discredit someone before seeing what she's capable of, especially someone as talented as Miss Fleming. She's got what it takes to sing bel canto: beautiful tone, great phrasing and legato, incredible trills, lovely coloratura and a very interesting fioritura, not to mention her mindblowing piannisimi... And let's not forget that Miss Caballe wasn't a "bel canto soprano" either, and she still became the most amazigng Norma.
I'm discrediting her based on what I've heard thus far, and I don't hear what it takes to sing this role. Caballe may not have been singing bel canto roles initially, but she was very soon after, and that's because she had the innate abilities to do so, Fleming does not. It's ok, this role should be shelved from the repertoire until someone comes along who can sing it, and that might be never at this rate.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Caballe wasn't a "Bel Canto soprano"? I guess that's why started out singing Bellini and Donizetti. If you're referring to bel canto as a voice type, then technically there isn't one. Bel canto repertory is sung by singers who are able to sing with bel canto technique. Semantics aside, I don't consider Fleming to be in that league, but she's lovely as a Mozartean soprano. I think some of the Straus roles would suit her well -- apart from Salome of course.
I am a Callas fan but on this role Cabale is just glorious. Callas sounds a bit screaming in omparisn. Caballe is so well balanced, simply... pefect, what else can be said.
Well, IMO, Caballe's voice was certainly not small. Here, she is just controlling the amount of power and volume that she breathes out. I have the original score of this aria and it says pianissimo, although a little more power couldn't hurt. If you listen to her version of D'amor sull'ali rosee from her Trovatore, you'll hear the power of her voice. And the same goes for her Turandot.
This is simply an amazing performance, Caballé is indeed a very good Norma. Quite different from Callas, but very good. No wonder Callas praised Caballé for this performance.
For me, this is one of the greatest moments in opera. Callas, after seeing the Paris screening of this film, was asked the question if she had any real successors. Her reply, "Only Montserrat Caballe."
Can't we all agree, that this is simply great singing? There can never be one BEST singer, every singer has his own qualities. Thank you for this video, she is superb!
She loses her consonants whenever she goes for the high notes and her glissando and trill have a fake quality, unlike Callas'. Nonetheless, this is a stunning casta diva, and even Callas praised Caballé highly for this performance. The Mistral swirling around and their robes flapping about also add to the drama of this performance. Caballé is a worthy Norma and nobody can deny that. Brava Caballé!

A fool is someone who believes the general publice automatically knows best. They could very well be applauding Britney Spears, but that doesn't mean she's worth it. There's an adage that says "opinions are like assholes, we all have one". Guess that leaves you where you belong.
Difficult to get as far as the signing - the conducting is so terrible: the flute intro says absolutely nothing, no emotional link with what's to come, and that's simply criminal conducting ... but I tend to agree with others that, when you get to the singing, Callas has set the bar, and that spoils it for anyone else.
Incredible breath control, gorgeous sound, magical phrasing and, alas, flawed intonation. Nevertheless, the stunning diminuendo and fermata on the high Bb at the end of the cadenza make up for any out of tune notes during the cavatina. She's one of the greatest Normas ever - right up there with Callas and Ponselle.
For me, just the idea of being able to intonate a word against all that wind is already quite remarkable. For all her interpretation on this performance, I consider her one of the greatest singers ever.
Exactly, she ranks just besides her "sisters" Ponselle and Callas. And don't forget that on the videotape, the sound was far less rough and dry than on the DVD which makes her voice thiner and more colorless in the higher notes than it actually is. And she's very dramatically credible througout the performance.
She is wonderful. Apart from Maria Callas, she is fantastic in Norma. But Callas is Norma. There is a certain despair in the role that only Maria could portray
Awesome. The wind adds a lot of atmosphere to the staging: Caballe seems to float onstage, so light, ethereal. And what a voice! I thought no other singer could rival Callas in this aria, but I was wrong. Thank you!
Thanks for all your comments. I also find this performance most fascinating. I advice you to buy the DVD and see it all. Jon Vickers is a glorious Pollione for Caballé.
