It's 12 years today since Greg's accident, it doesn't matter how much time has passed - Greg will always be remembered. He was the best!! RIP Greg Moore.
Brings tears to my eyes to see this again...Does anyone know what song that little piano ballad at the end of this video is from? I've heard it other times when people have died in pieces shown on espn. I just want to know if i can find the song itself somewhere....I would like to download it. Does anyone know?. So fitting. Moore was going to be great
@HelloShakedown I do not what the song is called, but I do have the same reaction with my eyes tearing up. I have Greg's book . I got it for Christmas last year. I was able to meet Dario Franchitti in January. I got him to sign Greg's book.
I doubt that Greg would have joined Ferrari if he ended up going to F1, because he drove a Mercedes in CART. For that reason, he would've probably joined McLaren, or at least that's what I think.
@ryanacehigh It wasn't Greg Moore's tire that flew into the stands at the 1998 US 500 at Michigan International Speedway. The tire came from Adrian Fernandez's car and Greg Moore was the winner of the race.
@champcar4ever Sorry i misunderstood that part, though my point still stands.. Of course it is so sad to see such a talented driver pass away but he always new the risks of racing.. I just feel even more sorry for those fans who probably didnt know the risks.. RIP
@ryanacehigh I was at the 1998 US 500 and the fans were certainly recognized. CART, IRL, NASCAR Formula 1 and other organizing bodies have always gone with the finishing of race. Even when Senna was killed at Imola, that was the day after another death at the track, Roland Ratzenberger. As a former racer I generally agree to finish. In the NFL they don't cancel games when players are made quadriplegic. Stadiums collapse. Death and injury are part of more sports than just racing unfortunately.
@lapleader The IRL abandoned the race at Charlotte after the tire flew and killed spectators. Under IRL rules, the race was abandoned after 79 laps. If it was under the FIA Code, the race would have a winner (starting the fourth lap makes a race official).
#1, it was Adrian's Tire, that came off, that Greg won the Race #2 Adrian won the race that Jeff Krosnoff was killed in. Was He scorned? Helio Castroneves, Owes his career @ Penske, as the replacement for Greg.
He died, in the Last race of season, to join Penske Racing the following year. Roger, had to get another driver. Helio IS Good! But Greg, was His choice.
Yeah PacWest ! In my opinion they had one of the most beautiful paint schemes on their cars. Especially 1996 - 1999. Mauricio Gugelmin was also a nice guy.
This is as hard to watch today as it was ten years ago. There hasn't been a day that has passed since his accident that I don't think of how great Greg was or how great he would have been. Thank you for posting this.
I will be posting a tribute for Greg on what would have been his 35th birthday and have watched the nascar racing that were in Fontana. I will also honour him on October 31 every year from now on.
i shouldn't write this....but i'm going to. i was watching this when it happened and i knew immeadiately it was going to be bad. when the word finally came, i broke down. i cried so hard it made my throat hurt. when my wife came home from work she told me she was sorry for not paying more attention when i called but it was killing her to hear me cry. the thing is....i don't remember making that call. my lips still quiver every time i see this segment.
My daughter went to school with Greg. I asked her what he was like as a high-school student. "A nerd", she answered. In teen terms I realized this meant he was intelligent and studious, something he carried onto the track with a calculated but aggressive style. A fine young man, a great loss to the racing community and to his family and friends here in Maple Ridge.
My uncle at 1:42 was the led mechanic/right rear tire changer, he also strapped Greg in every race. He told him that he should take it easy, also that he shouldn't race. My uncle told me that at that single point he's never seen anyone more determined to do something than Greg, that he's never seen Greg more determined to do anything. Greg was and simply is a DOER. At no point in time did he ever even think that he wouldn't,couldn't, won't race. NO ONE CAN EVER REPLACE GREG MOORE.
My brother and I were there. When they lowered the flags for him, we knew it was bad. The win meant nothing... It was just not real. After the race, it was so quiet. You could only hear the wind and birds. We were listening on our scanners and they said that they never told any of the drivers till the race was done. I'll never forget that day... =o(
Exactly right. HC-N had zero opportunity plans when Hogan shut down post Fontana. Watch the CART2Day pre Fontana race show where it is talked about. Helio sadly owes a LOT to Greg's passing.
yes, he was also the best Mercedez racer, i remember those engine weren't good enough, but still he was fighting agains several people, that's what got penske interested
I didn't see the crash until watching SportsCenter immediately after the race. That footage was even worse than the live feed; it followed the car through the barrel rolls that the director missed before he cut for the fatal impact.
I didn't see the crash as it happened; I tuned into ESPN about a hundred laps in, and all I knew was that Greg Moore had a serious accident. Some time later, his death was announced, and the atmosphere after the race was one of the most somber scenes I have ever witnessed. Paul Page had some strong words at the end of the telecast which I haven't been able to remember. I wish someone would upload the post-race footage; I definitely have seen the accident too many times.
you dont have to be in formula 1 to be a legend, just look at AJ Foyt, Dale Earnhardt, Tom Kristensen and Dario Franchitti

In the past he won 10 races in the ChampCar sanctioned IndyLights series and won 5 Grand Prix wins with Player's Forsythe.
He said that he'll drive at Team Penske for two years and joined Ferrari in Formula One and he could have lived, nowadays he passed away.

Perhaps would've won titles in Indy with Penske or moved to F1 with McLaren-Mercedes had he lived.
Would've been Canada's best bet for another World Title since JV.
