Last time I heard this kinda of alive harp 1970..J Giles Blues Band.Concert (4 am) locked in the Paramount Theater Springfield Massachusetts (cause the police were waiting to arrest us for after curfew) so 4 or 5 harps went at it for 40 min...wild..we slept there and left in the Morning..
Really, this is the best spontaneous harmonica thing I've ever heard on YouTube. We've discussed it many times at the MBH board. I just posted at the Yuri Lane "harmonica + beatbox" video that he needs to come look at this to see it really done well.
forget about harp playing... that was the best 7 minutes of MUSIC I've heard on the toob. Each of you all harp players sounded great.. I the beatboxer sounded to be using a harp w a different tuning? and was the youngen playing one with air hole covers for overblows? amazing harp playing all around... uggghh! Funky!
Hey its Ld Miller. Thanks for posting this this was at like 330am. i busted out the beatbox im playing Seydel Harmonicas ( THE BEST HARMONICAS IN THE WORLD) But the key im in is Dbm a natural minor. its a seydel, There amazing.
LD -Thanks for the great late night musical moment ! Glad you are enjoying the post. When Brendan said there was a little something you two had been fooling around with you where going try - I knew it was going to be good.
I had emailed Jay Gaunt - and just quoted his comment re. the key. While we're on the subject - Which key harp did you play on this ? - What position?
Did you ever look up Gerald McBoing-Boing ? There's a video on youtube.
LD is one of the NICEST guys you could ever want to meet...and his mom (who was at SPAH too) is awesome. He sure showed his stuff on this one - wish I'd heard him do this ...great, great, modern playing....Brendan is always brilliant and interacts so well with the younger guys...I loved their playing together.
I like how you can see the guy in the back with the blue jacket go and get out his harmonicas, only to hold it in front of his face in silence, maybe uttering a few squawks until he realizes he better get the hell out of there and watch.
Hi Elizabeth... I was referring to the post about the guy in the blue jacket... looked like Steve Baker, since I know he was there, but maybe that's not him ?
lol. He was most definitely enjoying it. His big grin was great to see. I LOVED the beatboxing/harmonica by LD...that was so incredibly cool. Definitely want to hear more of that at GSHC. It'd knock the socks off some people who probably think 'new' music can't be great, cool or enjoyable. But what worked was Brendan's subtle playing just under, as well. What a great sound! They should work it up as a song.....maybe with Jay too, since the three of them were all playing within the same range. ;)
Blue jacket is worn by August Bullock, a player from Santa Cruz, Calif. KB not present. Bearded guy is Buzz Kranz ("The Santa Claus of the Blues") His arm reaches out to offer Brendan one of his Filisko custom harps. On far right you get a glimpse or two of Richard Sleigh, another great one. At 2:45, I appear for a second, adjusting my recorder in the background. Yes, hanging out at SPAH is a good thing. And copying (with variations) same patterns is what harp players do - like the Blues
Glad you can appreciate this. I've got at least one more good-one to post tomorrow. These are shot with an Iphone 3gs - it was all I had - but at least I got a record of some very cool sh-t
Richard Sleigh also videotaped this...and got a wider shot of more of the people in the room - including you! It's posted under SPAH 2009 videos as well, but yours actually has clearer picture and sound. You did great, capturing this - I'm a huge fan of Brendan, LD and Jay. Very much appreciated. I'm SO surprised this was with a phone. Great job! I didn't videotape half as much as I usually do and mine are all on mini dvd's which need editing (something I've no idea how to do yet). ;(
comments appreciated Elizabeth - I will look for Richard's post. Yeah I was amazed at how good the iphone 3Gs captured this. I also have a mini DV HD canon that I didn't bring. **
The nice thing about the phone is that is is less intrusive than a bigger camera - and it's always there. The tricky part was keeping my hand steady and held up for that long - not knowing when or if it was ever going to end - at 3 in the morning !
**shot with the HD cam with a minor special effect in editing
I never get tired of watching (and listening to) this video. It is awesome!

You/Jay were right about the key. Db minor and C# minor are the same.

I may be mistaken, but that guy is Steve Baker, one of the best diatonic harp players on the planet,
Looks like he just wanted to enjoy the jam.

Hi Ken: that's Brendan, not Steve...this time. :)
