Its not that you make the screen black, you enter Infinity Jam mode.

Once you enter awakening mode, press L and R button

well from what I've gathered is Mathias' past life was Mauo (meaning Demon Lord) who was the ruler of the Census. Ruca's past life Asra was a Census general. I could be wrong about that though
