1st: of course, and I would've done the same, just to make sure I wouldn't say "shit" or or break the guyzmo appart. It's ALWAYS a good thing to rehears before doing any video, especially a demo.

2nd: because it's CHEAPER. And also because you know exactly how it's built if something foes wrong, if you want to take it off for instance. Overall, great video, it does exactly what it says, targeting the neophyte viewer.

I don't really understand why you would go to all the trouble trying to find the right box that is compatible with the hard ware when you can just go and buy one which you know will work and will be reliable which import if you are using it for backups. plus internal hd are designed to run at a perticular temp how do you know that you won't fry it and externals are cheap i have 232 gb for 120 and you can get bigger ones for about the same.

Try just unplugging the fan's power connector if you can, and keep an eye on the drive's temperature - if it's uncomfortable to touch, it's probably too hot. If you run the drive in a warm environment (>80°F/27°C) I would recommend keeping the fan in there.

In Windows, when you connect the external drive, you should get a "safely remove hardware" icon in your system tray. Click this icon and choose the drive to "eject" it, and then you can safely turn it off. Because of the way Windows writes to the drive, if you don't do this first you may lose data (though not always); the "safely remove" feature forces Windows to write any unwritten data so it's then safe to unplug the drive.

A lot of external hard drives nowadays will run of power from a USB 2.0 connection.

Au contraire, internal drives need power as well - they just pull from the system's main power supply (the old-style 4-pin molex connector, or the wide SATA power connector). The USB specification only allows up to 500mA of current for the device, and full-size 3.5" hard drives are well above this, so they need their own power connector.

Small external hard drives (1.8" or 2.5") generally require less, so most don't need an external power brick and just draw from the USB power.
