I watched this myself, however I didn't notice the huge flare in your video. Then again, I was viewing from CO, and it might have been different wherever you were at. In case you didn't hear about it, there was a meteor crash in Utah while this was happening and it lit up the sky like it was daytime for a brief moment. I, and everyone that I was with all thought it was close by. It really looked like the sun was up.
@SONICRULZ123ify i went camping last night to watch persedies, it wasn't as spectacular as i'd hoped but we some some big what i'd describe as falling stars. I didn't see any giant fireballs disappering into the horizon like i did with the eta aquarids. Going camping for meteor showers is one of my favorite hobbies ever since i seen those big ones. I saw close to a hundred all together, not a bad night! The music, shooting, and hanging out with friends was GR8 in the middle of the desert.
dam me and my friend drove out at like 1am and saw a bunch of wht i though were huge ones that he kept missing , but right b4 he gave up and i said just watch it looked liked sum one tore the sky open and there was like a rainbow of color , it was the most amazing thing i seen in the sky it was huge it was slow moving and it was there 4 a while , and the tail of it was still in the sky for like a few mins just like a cloud of vapor left
i'm here, baby. yes, it is a yearly occurrence and yes, you can see it from new zealand - but it will be low in the north and your "window" will be small. before the meteor shower starts, learn where the constellation of perseus will appear in your night sky and about what time. the southern hemisphere won't see as many because half of the radiant is below your horizon - but some are better than none! good luck to you... ~tammy
I know this is probably well finished and over but, id like to know for next time. is it a yearly thing? I live in New Zealand, will i be able to see them or is it only America/Europe part of the world? lol, uhm so yeah, couold someone get back to me ? (:
i remember one year the whole family piled out and set up for the meteor shower. We were too close to the city and didn't see much, and my niece, who was maybe 5 didn't have the patience to watch long enough, we ended up getting a flashlight and spotting the trees with it, she still remembers the "maglite meteor shower" :)
this looks cool. I stayed up for ages hoping the clouds would clear up but they didnt. Lost count of the amount of things I have missed because of the stupid irish weather :(
i went to see this out in long island ny and i was lying on the roof of me car and those meteorites looked like fire flies it looked like it was right in front of me as in a feet away from me face awesome feeling and this happens every year nothing to do with 2012
oh yea guys .... 12th was the peak ... doesn't mean it's over... just means from this day on ..... the best viewing will be later and later each night... so like tonight best viewing is 2am to dawn....
Tomorrow is 3am to dawn....
Saturday night ... 4am to dawn.. get it?
the peak was 12th but this shower lasts pretty much this whole month.
only saw one tonight but i wasnt laying down cause i just went in my backyard only have dirt and a good area of concrete but didnt stay out for long my neck hurt haha but this is my first time so of course ima be very impatient :) is this gonna happen again this year or next year?
sorry to have had to erased some comments. i'm not a prude, but i run a public observatory and certain words just don't fly well around children - and we encourage folks of all ages - include NASA to drop by here. call the clouds anything you like - but challenge yourself to be a little more creative on the wording!
keep watching for the perseids... and here's hoping the fluffy fluctus stays away from your night skies!
Everyone relax this meteor shower lasts about 2 weeks. You will still see meteors tonight and for about the next 4 nights. Each night will be less and less but there will be more than just an average night for sure.
GoW if you where looking southwest you might have seen Jupiter and neptune, they are very close right now and are the brightest object in the sky other than the moon right now.
i didnt stay out late enough but i saw my first shooting star!! but looks nothing compared to the actual meteors..probably a waste of time but any clear nights this august i'll check
i was out east of the interstate around 2am when i saw this: there were about five or six meteors all flying next to each other it was easily the craziest thing i have ever seen in my life. i feel so lucky i saw what i did it seemed really rare
and btw what is with the bright star...its the brightest one in the sky anyone know what it is...it used to be close to the moon early august and now its pretty far from the moon but anyone know what it is?
I live in Chichester in West Sussex (south of England) and the one time something o-so cool happens, it has to have cloudy skies! Urgh! lol
I stayed up until 3 in the morning to see them and didn't see one! Is there gonna be any more shooting stars/meteors? 'caus I'd love to see them in life not just on the internet! :)
saw 10 of them i hear alotta people saw a very huge one i wish i saw it :( well this is my first time seeing sometin like this..will it happen again this year or is it one of those every some kind of years thing?
we especially trekked out at 2am to have a looksie at the highest point on the downs, but the entire surrounding ares were all cloud smothered. gutted.
DON'T STOP WATCHING THE PERSEID METEOR SHOWER! it doesn't begin or end at a particular time. peak activity simply means this is when the highest number recorded is averaged. truth is, we don't know exactly how broad the meteoroid stream is or exactly when earth may pass through a concentrated area. those are the facts, jack.
what we DO know is about what date the earth will enter the stream and about when we'll exit it. you're going to see activity from the perseids until around 08/25!
Also a note about this meteor shower it actually lasts about two weeks. It begins about a week before August 12th and then declines each night after that until around the 17th...
so you still got time to witness some spectacular meteors the next few nights!
Perseids August 12, morning/evening Rises around midnight
Orionids October 21, morning Near new Moon
Leonids night of November 17/18, morning New Moon
Geminids night of December 13/14 Near new Moon
You will still be able to see many meteors August 13th P.M. through that whole night. Just not quite as many as there were tonight. Maybe 60% as many as tonight.
It was sunny all day on the 11th August here in Wales.
Then at about 9pm when I was going to go outside to try and catch some of the meteor shower, it clouded over and went misty.
The mist and cloud didn't clear up on the 12th aswell. I was well annoyed.
>:O
But im hoping that "maybe" i might see the end of the shower tonight. I just cant believe the clouds came over the two best days to watch it, then went on the last day of the shower ( which is the 13th right? )
oh my gosh you are so lucky, im in england- cloud nerli all year round lol- and live on an estate so loads of houses around me. not the best place to be!! haha i cant wait for next years, i just had a look at when the next shower is this yr and its on way too late for me to function properly the next day at school. ha.
i tried to stay up last night but the clouds ruined it for me as they came just at the peak of the show so we couldnt see a damn thing!! i did get to see 10 or so i think. and i know what you mean with the trail Scripp i saw it too but my mum said 'no they don't leave trails' mums eh, who'd have em? lol it was amazing, from what i saw....stupid clouds ruining things as always!!
the brightest one i saw was around idk 9:409:45 or something but thats it i saw 7 more after that one but my neck was getting exhausted so is stopped around 10:12 becuase it was 15 minutes after i saw one but this was my first time ever seeing something like this and it was very exciting..when is it supposed to happen again?
GoWCoD25 I live in NE Arkansas and it was around 1 A.M. CST here when I saw a HUGE meteor that broke up then had like 3 smaller pieces behind it. It went pretty much across 70% of the sky and when it finally burned out there was a brownish vapor trail (Cloud like) that it left behind which lingered probably 2 minutes before dissipating.
my room was facing the wrong side and my parents told me to sleep so i couldnt get out of there -.- but a few hours before i were outside and i saw three beauties of meteors it was amazing!
Rosh543 make sure you are looking straight up this late in the morning they might appear in any direction but they all seem to out of the NE sky.
Hold your arm up with your elbow at the horizon facing North East. Where your hand is above the horizon is where most will emenate from but they may not appear in the atmosphere until the middle of the sky above your or just to your left or right but all of them will be moving from lower NE sky outward.
Well I saw one so bright it actually made the sky kinda go purple here and almost went across the whole sky then there was a smoking trail left in the atmosphere after it burned out.
It was super spectacular. I did see about 30 more and three of those were pretty bright but nothing like that HUGE one.
Just came inside from viewing this and I saw three large ones and a HUGE one that went almost across the whole sky and was super bright, then left behind a smoking kinda cloud trail after it disappeared!!
omg wtf theres like 2 stars far apart but both south (i think)and they are tiny but they are flashing fast! like normal color of a star to red then back to normal the red but like reallllllyyyy fast does anyone elses see themm?!?!?!?!!? and they are not airplanes or helicopters i know for sure!!!!!
thanks for showing us unlucky ones what it looked like! last night it was so clear bur we didn't see anything and were under a thunderstorm advisory tonight, so there's not really much of a chance of seeing it ): I tried to wake up at 5 this morning but I slept through my alarm lol
Hi, CuckingFracked. Actually Perseids shower happens every year around this time, but this year is rare because it is passing through the debris herded together by Saturn. the debris is from a comet named "Swift-Tuttle" : ) When it passes by the sun the comet leaves debris in the orbital path. THAT only happens once every 130 years, not the shower itself.
best thing to do is go next to a tree where the light is away, and some of the comets are actually so bright, the moons light can't hide them or even city lights!! they should pass once every 5 minutes
well it happend between 11pm (tuesday night) and 12am-5am(wensday)
so theres stilla chance to see them , but it will be very very very little, i saw 5 of them yestersday, i live in the Santa Ana, CA (30miles away from Los Angeles, and i still saw it, it was very stellarific
I watched this myself, however I didn't notice the huge flare in your video. Then again, I was viewing from CO, and it might have been different wherever you were at. happens every year because earth goes through the area that the comet left its debris...
but this year is better because of some gravitational effect by Jupiter.
we got a good one tonight here in NE Arkansas... it was huge and broke up and the main part became a fireball.
Guess we are just lucky.
Maybe we are patient?... heh.

Mars will be visible in the constellation Taurus and Venus will be a little to the south in the constellation Gemini.
Scripp 2 years ago
Mars is visible near there tonight too and will appear slightly reddish in color if you are in an area with little light to interfere with your view.
Scripp 2 years ago
yea dat wz saturn... u talkin abt da one slightly west of the 3 stars directly above rite?
OmeRMan09 2 years ago
Just came inside from viewing this and I saw three large ones and a HUGE one that went almost across the whole sky and was super bright, then left behind a smoking kinda cloud trail after it disappeared!!
It was awesome!

thanks for showing us unlucky ones what it looked like! last night it was so clear bur we didn't see anything and were under a thunderstorm advisory tonight, so there's not really much of a chance of seeing it ): I tried to wake up at 5 this morning but I slept through my alarm lol

Step outside right now. I saw a bunch half an hour ago, but they seem to be slowing down. They last all night though.

What do you mean "this years?" it only happens around every 130 years. LOL
CuckingFracked 2 years ago
Hi, CuckingFracked. Actually Perseids shower happens every year around this time, but this year is rare because it is passing through the debris herded together by Saturn. the debris is from a comet named "Swift-Tuttle" : ) When it passes by the sun the comet leaves debris in the orbital path. THAT only happens once every 130 years, not the shower itself.

There are too many lights and trees where I live. :(
ShootTheZombies 2 years ago
best thing to do is go next to a tree where the light is away, and some of the comets are actually so bright, the moons light can't hide them or even city lights!! they should pass once every 5 minutes
