Well Linux seems OK but it's not always the answer. My 700MHz Piii and 256MB ram can still use the internet pretty well with Windows XP, as long as its running SP3 and doing absolutely no gaming or youtube vids. Old computers are still very usable today if you use them in the right way.
i should use this for my 10 yr old Dell Latitude laptop....my mom hogs my new laptop to play her stupid FB games....if i was to put life back into my old lappy...maybe she can use that instead it can do FB games right? oh and how about skype?
2. Windows 7 used 1 gig of ram idling because idle ram is wasted. It smartly caches your most used programs into ram which is why it's so quick, fast, and responsive. If that ram is ever needed, then it frees it up immediately. I'm not against Linux, just against misinformation. Also, no one in their right mind should install Win7 on anything less than a dual core with 1 gig of ram.
@themixturemedia Well if Ubuntu is running just fine for you then there's really no point of switching then. This is for PC that are so old that they have a very hard time running Ubuntu.
@SNAKE8029 I have not installed Lubuntu on my old box just yet. I'm guessing that installing Gimp onto Lubuntu will be possible but how well it runs will depend on your hardware. Clearly The Gimp takes up way less system resources then photo shop but I don't know how well something like the The Gimp would run on say a 500mhz cpu.
My HDD crashed with my vista premium on it and when i got my new 500g HDD, it was blank. luckly, i had a Ubuntu 9.10 disk and saved my ass to get my poor HP Dv7 to work again. since then, i have been forced to become a full linux user and its been eye opening. I dual booted Ubuntu 9.04-9.10 with my vista, but never made the complete jump. HP wants to charge me 29.95+ shipping for a vista re-install cd, fuck'em, i got something better for FREE !!! i souldnt have to re-buy windows. its bullshit.
ok i had 3 computer 2 new lab tops and a old 2001 gate way my labtop broke and wiith 3 brothers usen 1 labtop is a pain im tryen to use the desktop its runing and all i jsut cant connect to the itnternet i have a router but the computer wont serch for new connection's can you help me? also id need to dowload what ever you give me and put on junk drive and put on desktop
On the top left of your screen go to Applications, then Ubuntu Software Centre. Everything in there is free and open source. If you are feeling adventures go to the top left, system, admin, synaptic. This should get your started. Enjoy!
The correct pronunciation is "oo-boon-too" (written for English speakers). There are videos of Mark Shuttleworth and Nelson Mandela pronouncing the word this way. It makes me cringe when I hear people saying "u-bun-too" or "oo-bun-too". With certain languages (i.e. German) people will automatically pronounce it correctly because "u" is pronounced "oo".
lubuntu is still pretty heavy. if you want a true lightweight system, use arch or debian with lxde and try not using programs with gnome or kde dependencies
i say it like that too. i'm not really sure what the correct pronunciation of "ubuntu" is but seeing as how its an african word and since nearly all languages pronounce each letter exactly the same in every situation while english doesn't follow specific pronunciation rules, i'm guessing most people who say "oo-bun-too" are saying it wrong. until i hear the word pronounced by someone who speaks w/e language its natively from, i'm sticking with my idea of how its said
LOL , there's a 5 star ratting system, you could give it 5 stars. There's also a favorite button and a subscribe button. lol. Anyways. Thank you so very much for the kind words.

Love your energy man and your no BS approach. I wanted to know if I should go with X or Lbuntu -- and you called it.

For any computer less than 1 GHz processor I recommend using Puppy Linux.
For a PC above 1 GHz then use Lubuntu.

Some older Windows were not operating systems, they ran on top of DOS.

1. It's Windows Vista, not Microsoft Vista.

@robertocampayo You know I'm not really sure. I think you could. If your not using it for anything right now then it couldn't hurt to try.

@robertocampayo It should work PERFECT!
If you have a Pentium II, you might need a older kernel to boot , but the forum should help you if you need a light kernel.
Have fun with Green Computing! and ask me if you need anyhelp ;)
