  • Probably the best Guitarist ever... before his accident.

Always one of the most honest with no ego.

Now, he has replaced what he has lost in virtuosity by something so pure and peaceful...

  • 1:53 <----- porn music starts here !

  • Spelling error: Mofosaur, "could your jealousy be showing itself here?"

  • Mojosaur so where is your work on Youtube? It doesn't appear that you have posted any? Tell us where it is located, if there is any (or do you just specialize in throwing rocks at other people's earned talents.... could you're jelousy be showing itself here?)

  • NOSSA!! UM DOS MEUS PREDILETOS!!! LAYLA MUSICA LINDA

  • love his tone so smooth

  • delightful listening..

  • Enjoy.

May the 4S B with U and Larry

  • Love it

  • "sick to my bollix listening to wankers trying to play nonsensical arpeggios faster than the next twat"

    Yeah you, rite.

  • mullet man

  • YES!

  • opinions, everyone has one........just shut up and enjoy the music. I got a feeling most of us here are musicians anyways. His hair sucks, thats my opinion. new topic? yeah no one cares. When your good, you don't need hair style, all you need is that music swagger

  • It takes REAL TALENT to take a song with vocals,, and eliminate them,, and make the song just as great, and in some ways,, just as unique and original! That's Larry for you! LOL! The best overall guitarist of all time to date!

  • Wow. I love this song ow EC is playing it, but LC is just amazing! Haven't seen this video before, but love it. Thanks for posting it!

  • Awesome playing, Larry is the one of the greatest guitarists.

  • Awesome playing, Larry is the one of the greatest guitarist.

  • Amazing.

  • Larry is one of the VERY rare examples of making a Mullet look cool.

  • that is vicious mullet!

  • Jazz guys pronounce it "mou-Lay".

  • I don't know if that's Larry makin the music come out of the guitar or his mullet speaking to us?

  • Bad keyboard player, totaly wrong in the intro and chorus

  • Not bad, but is not even in same universe as the orig record version with Duane Allman. Having stated that, often in music, the best note is the one not played!

  • why?

  • Incredible Larry!!

  • great guitarist, however, he ws unfortunately born into an era that brought us the evil mullit

  • @TheIrishlad12 The Mullet is the coolest hair style of all time

  • @TheIrishlad12 the mullet is what, a crew cut? with or without out without the long hair in back.? i only know this word from mr transatlanitc himself. william gibson... i call it a redneck trucker rocker look. but if mullet includes the horrible fringes in the back , then it will suffice noicely. succint is always me goal, guv. and oi bloody 'ell WILL talk about hair all day while listening to high minded musical wallpaper anytime i feel like. oi! heh heh

ps davey bowies was even uglier

  • @55beanburritos I'm not exactly sure what you were saying, but I think I understand that the hair is inconsequential.

  • Sugar daddy music

  • Love to have that guitar.

  • Larry and Eric are both great player.. Larry has more advanced vocabulary and tecnique but that doesnt mean Eric is any less of a player.. they both have huge respect for each other.. Larry used to back up BB King in the 70's !

  • Just love the sound of this guitar. :)

  • Want the guitar he's using so badly haha

  • Thank God Duane Allman did this originally and not Calton...

  • @MrWowtone there both incredible though. dont you agree

  • Comment removed

  • @MrWowtone No dumbass originally this song is by Derek and the Dominos and Eric Clapton is the guitarist in that band and larry carlton is a hell of a lot better than eric clapton. Clapton is a three finger guitar player. Carlton sounds alot better than clapton does and this video is live.

  • @ThePirates1995 Django was a two finger guitar player and my father is stronger than your father. Seriously; this is like electric Francis Goya....

  • @ThePirates1995 i like carlton's soloing about 300,000 times better than clapton's, though eric played wrote and played his share of incredible riffs. from sunshine of your love to change the world, and can you imagine better in the pocket rock-folk finger picking than his on "can't find my way home"? i can't. by the was robben ford plays 3 fingered so leave that dismissal on the shelf.

  • Wow... Carlton... MacGuyver called... he wants his hair back.

  • @johngeetar Even Larry might want his hair back! This is not a new video. This video is a blast from the days of Macgyver. BTW - it would not surprise anyone if Larry Carlton was not, somehow, involved with the Macgyver television show theme music. My guess is you have not seen Larry lately.

  • Totally love Larry Carlton, however, there does seem to be something missing in this version of Layla, oh yeah, thats right, there was no Duane Allman to set the set on fire

as he did when he played with EC on Layla...

  • @jiaconis

I have the CD with this song from Larry Carlton. Sounds way better than this live performance and much better than Claptons version.

  • @Airox2009 Why do you say 'Claptons version' as if he has also covered it, it is claptons song. Plus, I have to disagree with you strongly, how can this version be better? There isn't any singing? Where as Clapton sings it with passion as well as playing the riff like this guy does.

  • Thumbs up If you think that irawr0206 and bensooty are both ridicule little kids

  • Godkeef, I feel the same! Ever since I first heard it on CD years ago. I know it's blashpemous, but the vocalization of the guitar, the way it sings, this style of music does it justice much better.

  • why does the keyboard sound wrong to me...?

  • Marx on keyborads

  • omg i am having an epiphany!

  • very sweet : )

  • Larry CarltonがTelecasterタイプの“Valley Arts”ギターを弾いている画像は初めて見ました。う~ん、カッコいいですね(^_-)-☆

  • what a amazing stage

    thanks for uploading :)

  • The eighties and early to mid nineties were ugly. And that keyboard sound: preposterous. Nonetheless, even though I don't like so many of the players' sounds (sax, keys), one would be deaf not to admit that these guys are musicians of the highest calibre.

  • gotta love his epic haircut

  • great job, good tone, great version, he improvises as good as anyone.

  • Clapton sure is a great guitar player but Larry can easily stick with him.

    Larry rocks.

  • @kleinebudde clapton is'nt in the same class as Larry Carlton..

  • @bensooty1 damn right carlton is alot better

  • His mullet distracts me a bit.

  • Comment removed

  • @bensooty1 just shut up; like anyone gives a single shit about what you think...

  • @irawr0206 if his hairstyle distracts you dont watch it you dumb twat..

  • @bensooty1 haha even though I know that you're an imbecile, I still reply to you because I can; likewise, I watch because I can... just mind your own fucking business and continue jacking off in your parents' basement; like I said before, your opinion just doesn't matter to anyone, so quit expressing.

  • @irawr0206 you are the typical uneducated piece of low-life that has no fucking idea what he is talking about and your diction is appalling.. Alas my parents do not have a basement so go screw yourself you little piece of yellow shit.. I would love to spend just 5 minutes with you and then you could eat hospital food for 6 months... now piss off you ignorant little retard..

  • @bensooty1 hahaha "ignorant little retard" "little piece of yellow shit" ? that is just fucking hilarious and further shows how much of an idiot you are. being racist and discriminating yet calling someone ignorant? congratulations! you've made my list of bigoted douchebags. and please don't talk about education...it's just too sad as you couldn't afford one. "I would love to spend just 5 minutes with you" oooh I'm so scared, mr. internet tough guy. go eat shit and die. :)

  • @irawr0206 it is filth like you that makes people racist.. now get back in the gutter where you belong with all the other pieces of shit..... goodbye asshole

  • @bensooty1 oh I'm sorry, I now get it and shouldn't have been mean to you. WHY didn't you tell me when you were a baby, your parents dropped you and you're kinda fucked in the head? :(( I'm so so sorry. Being mentally retarded and clinically depressed do lead to aggressive behaviours, so I would try my best to be reasonable with you. So, did you take your meds today?

  • @irawr0206 i see you only have 5 friends & 2 subscriptions..!! why does that not suprise me..!!!! oh i see now, you are only 19 and a high school drop out or maybe you did'nt even get that far.. i would'nt bank on a career sunny because you are as thick as a plank..now go play with the babies in your creche.. in other words Fuck Off.......... ps, dont reply as i cannot be bothered to converse anymore with a TURD...... bye bye

  • @bensooty1 hahaha judging people on how many YOUTUBE friends and subscription they've got? that is incredible but understandable for you *rubs your head* it's OHKAY it's important that you try.

  • @irawr0206 oh by the way shit face i have had more education and have achieved more DIPLOMAS than you could ever get in a lifetime.. now get back to your job of begging for a living & conversing with some other clowns of your own age group which has to be around 14 or 15 yr old.. or shut yourself away down one of those little holes that you stagnate in... the stench must be howendous...!!! dont bother posting anymore as i have more important things to do.. goodbye deadbeat..

  • @bensooty1 aww someone's sad :( I'd seriously laugh you actually had one of those multiple DIPLOMAS....hohkay enjoy working in McDonalds hahaha

  • @irawr0206 ps numbnuts, i am a success, its you who will end up working for peanuts in burgerking or mc'ds, or maybe sweeping the streets if thats what you are not already doing... :o) dont waste time in replying as my pc will not accept you anymore as i've cancelled your post..

  • @bensooty1 aww really? you're so cute when you're desperate ;D

  • Larry Carlton for me is one of the best all around guitar player.'love the "Carlton" feel of the guitar..

  • This was done around the late '80s period, one of my favourite L.C. eras. I especially LOVE the drum fills in the B section at 2:16. I wonder who was drumming for him in this. I don't have many L.C. CDs but I do have and love On Solid Ground. Thank you so much for posting this!

  • Awesome!!

  • Jesus, what a great mullet!

  • It's just the sheer fact that you make this argument that annoys most talented musicians. Carlton is a jazz guitarist, a pinacle medium for virtuosity; Clapton has never presented himself as such. He is a singer/songwriter and a very soulful guitarist. He owns a brand that has influenced countless players, including Carlton by his own admission. The comparison makes you come off as pretentious, and missing the real missions those artists want to accomplish individually.

  • @bobfredjordan Lol Carlton is not a Jazz guitarist.. mostly blues rock.

  • Is this through a dumble amp?

  • Great version!!!

  • Mighty fine. But I liked Clapton better on this one.

  • sounds better than clapton does on his own song !

  • Comment removed

  • wow. wish i could get a mp3 of this

  • lovely verison and I'm a huge Clapton fan.. Larry is great

  • BEAST!

  • just goes to show what can be done with a great tune.

  • That is very sexy, i love the smooth groove!

  • Anyone knows what the guitar model is that?

  • good, but EC is always the best

  • @onepieceslash EC is always the best at what? Do you play an instrument? Guitar perhaps? How long?

  • @onepieceslash What the fuck are you on dude? Clapton should get down on his all fours and suck on larrys hairy balls!

  • @fengerbody123 Thre's a visual for ya....

  • Great video!! However, It doesnt even come close to the man who wrote this song!! As great as Larry Carlton is, Eric Clapton Rules on this song period!!

  • Best Guitarist ever!!!!

  • business in the front and party in the back!!!! the LC Mullet returns!

  • this is the most bad assest song of all time

  • Wasn't Lee Ritenour more in the school of LA studio cats that competed with Carlton and then made and album with him. Knopfler and Clapton were song writers and innovators. Carlton and Ritenour always were about the precision and tone and way more into Jazz despite this fusion version of Layla.

  • Mullet Power...

    Larrys playing rocks though

  • Would have to agree with burnetvicefan that Carlton is a better player. He's got better intonation, more feel ( his guitar talks), etc. Same with knopfler. Dicky Betts has got a lot of feel to his music too;just not quite as clean a player.

Hum, maybe it just comes down to gibson players vs. fender. Maybe the guitar makes the man - no I'm sure it's hard work and God given talent. :D

  • we all know that most of the people on youtube are arrogant and sutpid kids tht think making fun of things is "cool".

  • I have to chuckle when I see all of these vids with juvenile in fighting and bad mouthing of real musicians..hey, if some of you clowns are so knowledgable, where are your vids? Why hasn't anyone ever heard of you? I'm a guitarist, been playing 40 years, and I can't help but be embarrassed by the petty bullshit.

  • thankyou

  • Comment removed

  • I never said I had a band, just that I have been playing the guitar all my life. You are all bullshit pretorious. You're the type that lives in your mothers basement, living in blissful ignorance. Since when do we have to put up videos to show that our posts ensure credibility? That is completely beside the point, as is your entire post. Keep on being a ignorant asshole son. You're comments are a disgrace to anyone on this site that enjoys music. Go back to your fantasy world son and shut up.

  • I wasn't even addressing you, you dullard. Must have hit a nerve there.

  • @pretorious700 Hey Pretorious compare this with original from Clapton in terms of style?I never heard the original

  • @pretorious700 I agree wholeheartedly, sometimes its no harm to offer an opinion though...

Anyway where are your videos, after 40 years you must have a library!! I can show you mine!!

Only winding you up by the way, good point...

  • @pretorious700 you're probably as good as any of the heroes, maybe not got the ego. I know loads of players that could blow away most of them...Beck is a true phenomenon...as is Tal, his chosen bassist. She is prodigious in a quiet way and am guessing she's getting all the 6-stringers snarling! Love it!

  • Carlton has better cord modulations and progressions, superior harmonics, and uses the guitar in a way no one has before or since. Eric Clapton is great, there is no denying that; but Larry Carlton is the master. Clapton is more repetitive in his playing than Larry is by far. Also, I would argue that Mark Knopler is the closest guitar player to compete with Carlton. The only edge Clapton has over Carlton is that he's a better singer.

  • @burnettvicefan Where do you put Steve Lukather in there? Just curious.

  • By the way, do you even know who Larry Carlton is? This is the man behind Steely dan, (he laid out their tracks) responsible for writing and performing the infamous "Kid Charlemagne" solo, ranked the third best guitar solo ever by Rolling Stone. If you are a legitimate music student, then you'd have to be a total moron not to study the complexity of the 'Charlemagne' solo. That solo alone is more complex and creative than anything Clapton could ever write, much less perform.

  • And by the way, given your pathetic juvenile response, you're a pathetic excuse for a human being. Join the real world and move out of your mother's basement. Oh right, only someone who is capable of using their cerebellum could do that. When I see posts like yours, it gives me a good laugh. It's always interesting to encounter morons who think they are ten rungs up the evolutionary latter. Go play your crappy guitar and leave youtube comments for those that have something useful to say.

  • You see how I responded in a civil manor? Your so full of yourself you can't even make an argument without cussing and getting all pissed off... It just shows how little intellect you really have... Take care... Don't forget to look when you cross the street and stuff, wouldn't want society to loose someone like you lol...

  • I've played guitar my whole life, and I have a great ear for music. You don't have study it in a California college to know what's what. Clapton is worlds behind Larry Carlton, which is made very obvious when you study the difference in their work. This isn't even scratching the surface of Larry's cannon, but it blows away Clapton's version. If you think in any way that Carlton is inferior to Clapton, you're a complete moron. The fact that you studied music makes your opinion look even sadder.

  • The second solo before the finale is the best part.E Γιαννη Καλ.?Καλο ε?

  • hehe yeah!

  • Comment removed

  • You clearly have no clue about music. This is one of the most briliant live performances ever recorded. Carlton was able to match his album recording note for note, and that's rare. Cheesed out? Where did you get that bullshit from? Larry is the best guitar player I've ever seen (and heard) especially when playing live. Your comment is completely ignorant and full of shit.

  • Really? Is that why I graduated from Berkley with a 3.8GPA in guitar? A trivial thing like your opinion doesn't matter. The fact is he is like every other cheesed out 80's player. Just accept that he is in no way as good as the original creator of the song... I was commenting on the construction of the song it's self anyway. He used super easy progressions and things. Eric Clapton is worlds better technically speaking. If you have no music background that's why you don't hear it....

  • Crapton is (Like Larry Carlton) a hack! Jeff Beck, Django, Pass, Montgomery etc. THAT'S WHERE IT'S AT!

  • Maybe Joe Pass, Django ARE legends, but Pass personally taught Larry some, and liked Larry tremendously! How the heck do you call Larry a HACK? Beck's good, but does he have 5,000 recordings under his belt, and very good ones, like Larry? How about more than 100, yes, 100 GOLD RECORDS? How about grammys, how about t.v. theme songs: Hill street blues, Rockford files, Magnum PI, Greatest American hero, Great White hope, Who's the boss, and many more! Some popular movie soundtracks too, so please!!

  • Which is why they're on that stage, playing with one of the greats of guitar, and you're doing what by comparison exactly?

  • composing matmoose's 3rd symphony in fuck off minor.

  • Viva la mullet! :)

  • so cool!

    so sexy!!!

  • Great band - ( actually John Ferraro on drums, but yeah, great mullet... :)

  • this is ph fat. ( which means awsome)!

  • Larry is one of the best guitarists of our day, especially in the jazz genre. I've met him twice. One hell of a guy.

  • He is THE best guitarist period. I'm very jealous of you man. I'd love to meet Larry, he's the best guitarist I've ever heard. He went through a personal hell but came out of it okay (getting shot in the throat).

  • Ohh... :(

    0:06

  • great video ..do you know name title of video ..how can I get it

  • There's no video, this was a televised concert I taped back in the early 90's. I posted 2 songs from this concert, Layla and Don't Give it up.

  • Do you know where it was? (I'm pretty sure I can see my parents there.)

  • Nice tone, great technique, but the first three minutes of this skate dangerously close to muzak, for me.

  • 1:06

    love it!

  • no offense but i kinda like 1:07-1:17

    women swaying to music yes?

    after all

that's the reason guys play music no?

but yeah the fret note at 106 is sweet

  • Attack of the Mullet! Great playing!

  • mullet alert

    mullet alert

please send a barber medic stat

but $10 bucks says they come back in style one of these days

    (im growing one out now

i mean hockey season's just around the corner)

  • great tone he is the shit

  • I forgot to mention how staggering this live performance is. You can barely tell the difference between the studio track and the live version. For those who don't know, Larry was working on this track for "On Solid Ground' in 1989. While recording, Larry was shot in the throat by a burglar in Larry's studio. Larry managed to finish the album the same year despite the gunshot. He almost died and his vocal cord was severed. Yet, here he is performing live after the gunshot. Strong person.

  • Couldve been a different song on it's own

  • It is its own song. It's a track on his FANTASTIC album 'On Solid Ground." As good as it sounds here, on the album it's superb. There's two types of guitarists; Larry Carlton and everyone else. This is definitely the best version of Layla and some of the best songwriting I've ever heard from Larry. I never went back to Clapton' s version once I heard Larry's. The guitar does the singing for him.

  • Larry's version of Layla is the best ever performed/arranged and he pulls it of without vocals.. regarding the Valley Arts guitar and sound.. its pure silky smooth soulful heaven... can see why changing

  • This was a period of time that Larry chose to use start type guitars for their ability to cut through all layers of instrumentation and here he's using just one of his custom made "Valley Arts" guitars, made by Mike McGuire, who now works for Gibson guitars.

  • Larry used a lot of guitars and was particularly fond of Les Paul's. During part of the 80's and 90's he was using the Valley Arts, which also gave his his own model. He said he'd like to silky smooth sound of the EMG's and the comfortable smaller scale guitars that Valley Arts was building at the time. Too bad McGuire and Carness sold out!

  • @arnieg65 i coundlnt see lary using EMG's though in my opinion they sound like shit unless there mixed and processed right but idk. especially for what larry likes to do even though he is a master of all styles, i think passive pickups would be a better set for him. but its an opinion

  • is that the same gtr Brent Mason uses?

  • like being caught in a nightmare with ..oh forget it

  • oh damn...I love this Layla's version...larry u are amazing!

  • what amp does Larry use?

  • dumble amps

  • dumble

  • awesome

  • Look the Vai, Gilbert etc comparison to Larry is pointless, its simply a matter of different people expressing themselves differently. And believe me Larry can play as fast as any of the rock players, can they stand in on a Steely Dan session though?? Could they play Jazz, soul, funk and blues like Larry? Could they write music like Larry? Go and see this man live and you'll forget any comparison with rock noodlers in matter of seconds!

  • Hey don't forget that this is Eric's song :P

  • Just better ;-)! His version on his cd sounds great.

  • so true! thats exactly my way of explaining Larry

  • I've seen Larry Carlton live! Frickin' awesome!

  • A good point well made.

  • @jamesm5744 Yeah, plus all those LA studio guys can read dots like an architect reading blueprints. It is a whole different thing. Carlton could not give a crap about rock bands but he probably likes supporting R&B singers. It is a whole different thing.

  • @jamesm5744 so why are you comparing?

  • @slanshroom Im not comparing, in fact I love all the musician i mentioned.

Im trying to make the point that sometimes people get caught up on technique, alhough it is important, we all understand english but how many of us can write like Wordsworth? Ye know what I mean..

  • @jamesm5744 - yes, although Vai's stage trick used to be that anyone could bring any piece of sheet music and he would sight read it onstage. Stylistic differences aside it still displays his musical knowledge. Chet Atkins, Frank Gambale and Lenny Breau all rip it up, but each in their own way.

  • @jamesm5744 Started out fine but ended up crap!!! Let people have there idols! everyone has their own musical preference and so they are going to think that they are better. These are all experienced players were talking about whos has all got there for a reason!!! Guitarists play what the fuckin want to play!!! are you sugesting that vai and gilbert should play Jazz just to proove themselves? You commented a judmental comment with another judgemental comment making you ni better

  • @GuitarsOfArp Its not about syyle or opinions or idols. Louis Armstrong once said 'there are only two types of music, good and bad'. I happen to love Vai as it happens and he is one of my idols. Im simply stating that in my opinion, which if its ok with you Id like to hang onto, players like Carlton are few and far between and Im sick to my bollix listening to wankers trying to play nonsensical arpeggios faster than the next twat...

Carlton is the real deal, deal with it...
