I love this!! Thanks for uploading. Please take good care of this awesome piece of history. I have a few old computers. I have the first Compaq Portable that looks very similar to this.
Does this have a CMOS battery? I have one as well and it should be working. I am worried about a leaking battery if there is one. I was just reminded of CMOS batteries today. Doh!
@shoyaks100 Isn't that the film he's got to sell it to hospitals but he fails and become poor with his son, they go to a place 100s of people waiting for a bed?
I think they would call it a mobile computer, not a laptop. Back then the idea of holding a computer on your lap was inconcievable. So the naming explains the whole leg breaking thing, mobile computer was just something that you could close up and take with you easily. Or, I should say easier than taking a regular PC.
"Buy the Osbourne Executive! It's only the size of a brief case!"
Well, considering the size of computers way back then, this probably was considered one of the first "portable", that only weighed as much as a dufflebag full of clothes. Lots and lots of clothes.
That's a nice looking machine right there. Microsoft BASIC. Bill Gates and Paul Allen put alot of hours of coding in to Microsoft BASIC. I'd love to have one of these machines.
I have one. Have not thought about selling it but I seel them on ebay for only about $80. I have all the original floppies too. I used to do papers on it from jr high school.
Pretty cool looking device. Amazing how far we've come since then, in such a relatively short period of time. Can't wait to see what computers look like 25 years from now.
never mind i am fixing to get one brand new in the box with over a thousand dollars worth the programs from games to office programs and all the manuals for it it has been stored in the box in a air conditioned storage facility the computer has less than 20 hours on it its frken awsome!!!!
The Osborne 1 was the first commercial portable computer. The very first computer with the portable form factor was the Xerox NoteTaker though, developed in 1976 (5 years before the Osborne 1).
It looks like the macbook air has a competitor...

Not.
McVaio 3 years ago
what was then
bcnr33skyline187 3 years ago
The Osborne 1 was the first commercial portable computer. The very first computer with the portable form factor was the Xerox NoteTaker though, developed in 1976 (5 years before the Osborne 1).
McVaio 3 years ago
cool but that was what i read in a magazine so i thought it might be true, but did that one have a battery on it
bcnr33skyline187 3 years ago
The Osborne 1 had an optional battery pack I believe. The NoteTaker didn't. But most portables didn't have a battery built in.
McVaio 3 years ago
thats probibly why it was listed as the first one then
bcnr33skyline187 3 years ago
The Osborne Executive is a follow-up model for the Osborne 1.
McVaio 3 years ago
That's some serious fan spinup noise there :D
From your description it seems like this machine came with pretty much all the software the average person would ever need :D
