Sifu, I'm not sure if you've ever done live drilling for a striking art before, but it's rather common to run drills with gloves and shinguards on. Check out pretty much any Muay Thai or Mixed Martial Arts gym.

Wow, thats girly. When you have skill you don't have to worry about accidently hurting your opponent and even if you do hit them you should have the muscle control so it only skims. I don't go over things with gear on and I'd be surprised to find out someone with either Bruce or Joe's skill would. Seriously I don't know if you do muay thai but after a while your entire body becomes conditioned. However I don't see how that could happen in a school where you have gear just to go over drills.
No, what's girly is holding back your punches while practicing. If you aren't hitting hard, you aren't hitting correctly. Sure, you hold back a little during drills, but gear still prevents accidents.
Pro Boxers wear headgear when they practice. Does that make them girly? UFC fighters wear boxing gloves when they practice. Does that make them girly? Muay Thai fighters wear shinguards when they practice. Does that make them girly?
Sifu, it's quite possible that the photos you're seeing are from the drills that Joe Lewis did with Bruce Lee. It would make more sense than sparring photos, given the equipment you said they are wearing. Honestly, the more I think about it, I can't recall EVER seeing a video in which Bruce Lee sparred against ANY opponent. I've seen a lot of training drills, and a lot of choreographed film, but never any sparring.
What about blind folded against the other wing chun expert or that anonymous black belt at another demonstration he made look like a child? Why would Joe and Bruce gear up just to go over drills? Its not like they were beginners who were afraid they'd accidentally hit the other.
This video doesn't really do them justice because the frame rate is too low for their speed. It sometimes catches just inbetween the techniques and makes their arm movements look awkward.
All these UFC and MMA "new kids on the block" are nothing but punks calling themselves "athletes" or "martial artists," even though they don't have a clue about sportsmanship or humility, respectively. And they disrespect guys like Lewis and Wallace who shaped competitive fighting into what it is today.

I'm 23, and a full-time martial artist, and I respect the "originals" like Bill and Joe, plus today's top fighters like Chuck Liddell, Randy Coutoure and Georges St. Pierre. But I find a lot of people my age who are either fans of MMA, or are competing in the sport, think every other style is crap and "unreal." Funny how they fight under rules, too.
Both fighters are one dimensional! Just kicking! Joe is trying to initiate the movement he picked up from Bruce(watch carefully at his movements) and Bill was too dependent on that left leg hook, when he missed he was open to counters and Bill had very little defense!
These two guys later threw thier teachings and insights make Karate better for a lot of people. Like them, or hate them, they did shape Karate for a great many years. And I was very grateful for that.
So getting to my point...when all these karate & kung fu black belts fought..after training all these years doing their katas & point fighting & practicing all the blocks & straight or circular strikes...they ended up throwing wild punches & kicks that for the most part didnt work. That is something that is on video, not something that is made up & was seen by the entire world & martial arts community.
One, I never talked about multiple opponents..was talking about one on one. Two..yes there was no eye gouging, or fish hooking or finger manipulation..but there was kneeing on the ground, elbow strikes anywhere, groin strikes, kicking to the head on the ground, etc...so it was much more like a street fight than it is now....continued above.
What evidence?? Just look at the first UFC's....where it was no rules..like a street fight & you had all these karate, kung fu black belts that when they were rushed or approached...they ended up throwing wild punches & kicks & lost. What happened after all that? The "martial arts world" was turned upside down as they realized that all that they had been training in for years...was ineffective. That's the reality and truth. How you train is how you react when put in a self defense situation.
A major problem with that statement was that there WERE rules: no eye-gouges, no fingerlocks, no fish-hooking the mouth, no going for knees, etc. The problem is that in UFC you're not allowed to attack sensitive areas like that, so brute strength has a keen advantage over skill.
Besides, on the street you're not likely to come up against a skilled fighter -- odds are you'll fight a fist flailing guy. You don't think Lewis or Wallace could take an ordinary Joe?
I agree. Basically, in UFC you're not really allowed to kill your opponent or maim him. Consider grapplers, they'd have trained to break the opponent's neck, and the striker would train to crack the opponent's skull at all distances and angles, and every match would last 20sec max. and there won't be an UFC left after a week!
...neck cranks CAN break an opponent's neck, and strikers DO train to crack the opponent's skull at all distances and angles. The reason UFC matches last as long as they do is because the fighters train their Defense as well as their Offense.
Even bareknuckled, the single-strike KO's that you see in movies are extremely rare in real life. Even moreso if it's a bout between two conditioned fighters.
Which also comes to another major point about UFC -- it's a one on one fight. Grappling has an advantage over striking, being that it is one on one. A striker would have an advantage over a grappler in a multiple opponent situation. It's just how it is. Think about it.
Yes I totally agree. However when I mean train to crack the opponent's skull, I don't mean punching a sandbag, but practising to crack rocks, etc, and aiming at the temple, at the eyes, under the jaw and other vulnerable parts- things banned in the UFC.
Grapplers who train to kill rather than for submission, can be astoundingly fast at disposing an opponent as well. However, UFC is a perverted form of fighting, rules allowing for an exergeration of certain aspects but banning Many other aspects of a real fight. Suffice to say, after so many UFC fights, not many fatalities have occurred.
I don't think UFC rules allow for eyeing gouging, or for twisting the opponent's neck to break it, or for biting, head-butting-elbows, ear-pulling, etc. There are parts of the body one cannot train for, and attack on these are all banned.
I've been a martial artist for over 40 years and I've tried it all: Shotokan karate, Ed Parker's Kenpo, Wing Chun, JKD, TKD, Thai boxing, judo, hapkido, aikido, kendo, BJJ, etc. Through my experience of training and unfortunate life encounters, I can honestly tell you that it is very unlikely you'll successfully break someone's neck just like that. Biting and ear-pulling is also unlikely to work especially in a drunken brawl. If you know how to do it, good for you. But don't ignore MMA.
By the way I didn't mean to say bitting etc were effective techniques. I only meant to say that they were banned, so as to illustrate the point that there are indeed rules in MMA. Also, many MMA fighters are great, but the idea of "MMA" itself arose because too many arts began to have too many rules. The real fight had always been beyond MMA and MMA rules (or rules of any other martial art tournament, for that matter).

Sifu, I'm not sure if you've ever done live drilling for a striking art before, but it's rather common to run drills with gloves and shinguards on. Check out pretty much any Muay Thai or Mixed Martial Arts gym.
Without video, we have to assume they are exactly what Joe Lewis said they were: drills.

Wow, thats girly. When you have skill you don't have to worry about accidently hurting your opponent and even if you do hit them you should have the muscle control so it only skims. I don't go over things with gear on and I'd be surprised to find out someone with either Bruce or Joe's skill would. Seriously I don't know if you do muay thai but after a while your entire body becomes conditioned. However I don't see how that could happen in a school where you have gear just to go over drills.

No, what's girly is holding back your punches while practicing. If you aren't hitting hard, you aren't hitting correctly. Sure, you hold back a little during drills, but gear still prevents accidents.
Pro Boxers wear headgear when they practice. Does that make them girly? UFC fighters wear boxing gloves when they practice. Does that make them girly? Muay Thai fighters wear shinguards when they practice. Does that make them girly?

Sifu, it's quite possible that the photos you're seeing are from the drills that Joe Lewis did with Bruce Lee. It would make more sense than sparring photos, given the equipment you said they are wearing. Honestly, the more I think about it, I can't recall EVER seeing a video in which Bruce Lee sparred against ANY opponent. I've seen a lot of training drills, and a lot of choreographed film, but never any sparring.

I'm 23, and a full-time martial artist, and I respect the "originals" like Bill and Joe, plus today's top fighters like Chuck Liddell, Randy Coutoure and Georges St. Pierre. But I find a lot of people my age who are either fans of MMA, or are competing in the sport, think every other style is crap and "unreal." Funny how they fight under rules, too.

So getting to my point...when all these karate & kung fu black belts fought..after training all these years doing their katas & point fighting & practicing all the blocks & straight or circular strikes...they ended up throwing wild punches & kicks that for the most part didnt work. One, I never talked about multiple opponents..was talking about one on one. Two..yes there was no eye gouging, or fish hooking or finger manipulation..but there was kneeing on the ground, elbow strikes anywhere, groin strikes, kicking to the head on the ground, etc...so it was much more like a street fight than it is now....continued above.

How you train is how you react when put in a self defense situation.

A major problem with that statement was that there WERE rules: no eye-gouges, no fingerlocks, no fish-hooking the mouth, no going for knees, etc. The problem is that in UFC you're not allowed to attack sensitive areas like that, so brute strength has a keen advantage over skill.
Besides, on the street you're not likely to come up against a skilled fighter -- odds are you'll fight a fist flailing guy. You don't think Lewis or Wallace could take an ordinary Joe?

I agree. Basically, in UFC you're not really allowed to kill your opponent or maim him. Consider grapplers, they'd have trained to break the opponent's neck, and the striker would train to crack the opponent's skull at all distances and angles, and every match would last 20sec max. and there won't be an UFC left after a week!

Even bareknuckled, the single-strike KO's that you see in movies are extremely rare in real life. Even moreso if it's a bout between two conditioned fighters.

Which also comes to another major point about UFC -- it's a one on one fight. Grappling has an advantage over striking, being that it is one on one. A striker would have an advantage over a grappler in a multiple opponent situation. It's just how it is. Think about it.

Grapplers who train to kill rather than for submission, can be astoundingly fast at disposing an opponent as well. However, UFC is a perverted form of fighting, rules allowing for an exergeration of certain aspects but banning Many other aspects of a real fight. Suffice to say, after so many UFC fights, not many fatalities have occurred.

I've been a martial artist for over 40 years and I've tried it all: Shotokan karate, Ed Parker's Kenpo, Wing Chun, JKD, TKD, Thai boxing, judo, hapkido, aikido, kendo, BJJ, etc. Through my experience of training and unfortunate life encounters, I can honestly tell you that it is very unlikely you'll successfully break someone's neck just like that. Biting and ear-pulling is also unlikely to work especially in a drunken brawl. If you know how to do it, good for you. But don't ignore MMA.

Also, many MMA fighters are great, but the idea of "MMA" itself arose because too many arts began to have too many rules. The real fight had always been beyond MMA and MMA rules (or rules of any other martial art tournament, for that matter).

Fool. Just because some OUT OF THEIR PRIME strikers were easy to take down for an elite grappler (royce gracie) by no means means two of the GREATEST strikers would suffer a tapout. Consider the fact that Bill knew judo and Joe was also a wrestler.

Very true! They were trained in striking arts not grappling. You cant kick or punch on the ground. It all happens to quick.

Wrong,Chuck did spar with Lee, and it was a direct result of that sparring session that Lee started to learn how to kick to the head, and thats in a documentry about Bruce Lee!

Also false. Lee's kicking was based on Northern Chinese styles that he modified. He would also chamber his kicks. Norris style is a Korean form of kicking. He learned nothing from Norris. I suggest you pick up A Warriors Journey and listen to Bruce's own voice about what amateurs these bums were at the time.

"Amateur bums?" Shows what a fool you are, in his fifties, Wallace could knock you out, cold, with both hands tied behind his back. My Kyokushin-kai teacher trained with Wallace and Lewis, and they were both extremely skilled fighters, and great trainers, in their day. And Lee helped Wallace by sending him to acupuncture, when his leg got bad.

Regaring the foot work, thats just standard boxing foot work, and Joe Lewis had been trained by Joe Orbillio in boxing.

Actualy Joe has often said he could beat Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris has never publicly said anything of the sought, and going back to Joe Lewis, thats the reason why Joe Lewis refused to be in Way of The Dragon, and Chuck Norris got his break. By the way Joe beat Chuck more times than Chuck beat Joe!! And Lee didn't believe in head kicks until he sparred with Chuck!!

Lee never sparred with Chuck Norris, nor did Joe Lewis. And Joe Lewis saying he could beat Bruce Lee should be taken with a grain of salt, as Lewis believes he is the greatest fighter in the world. Chuck simply told Bruce it's nice to have the option to be able to kick anywhere you want, and Bruce saw his point. It wasn't because he got his head kicked off by Chuck or anything like that.

Btw, if you believe everything Lewis says, then he'd have you believe he can beat any MMA fighter past or present. Now I'm not trying to sell him short, but the guy does have a huge ego.

And of course Joe will say that after Bruce is dead. Bruce would've only continued to grow as a martial artist but died young.
