I admire spiritism as a religious philosophy, as it does not condemn people to eternal damnation, and it focuses in improvement by your moral actions, not by blindly believing in one faith or another.
But, on the other hand, I think it's kind of pretentious to consider itself a science, since the evidence of spiritist phenomena haven't been strong enough to convince the scientific community. It brings on very interesting scientific theories, but it's not a science, at least not yet.

His belief that Uri Geller is one of historys great psychics collapses when compared to James Randi s study of Uri Geller for example. It is great to debate these issues . I think it's important that people don't accept things on blind faith- that's the importance of the book The Psychic Mafia. People need to have their eyes open because there are a lot of frauds out there. Also, the picture of Helen and what I presume to be Albert (her guide)- you have to admit it looks a bit ridiculous doesn't it? It looks very fake.
On the other hand, I DO believe Helen Duncan was an incredibly gifted medium. Did she sometimes fake it- maybe. But her trial was a sham.

Do I think she camped it up a bit yes, gifted medium yes, persecuted until her death, YES!
I am unimpressed by this tape and its message. Exposing the instances of fakery does not discredit the thousands of people who experience something like the other lady in this tape. Part of the problem with Spiritualist readings is that it is a "command performance" Something as subtle and delicate as Spirit Contact is not subject to a "stand and deliver" routine hence, the desire for "results" creates the pressure to fake something.
I guess while I think the book provided a valuable service (people should not be so damn gullible) I just cannot conclude from it that all mediums are frauds. If someone practices mediumship without accepting any money or gifts whatever; selling no merchandise, "classes", or "workshops", etc., then I have no problem with it.
But, which "medium" does that? Professional mediums are all about money and self-promotion.
Well when you say someone is a "professional" that implies they are going to be compensated for what they do. There are plenty of mediums working in home circles that aren't getting paid a dime for what they do- in fact they pay out of their pocket to travel to the seance.
But why should a medium not be allowed to make a living off their mediumship? I disagree with your assumption that those who do are automatically guilty of fraud or being unethical. I believe they are entitled to make a living
I can tell you that most mediums actually do not 'make a living' off of their mediumship but I fail to see why they shouldn't. If a footballer can earn for kicking a ball on a pitch, a priest can earn for talking on a pulpit, a hairdresser can earn for cutting hair, an artist earn for painting...then why shouldn't a medium be given money for their time and effort. It really gets to me that people use this excuse to moan about having to pay for something and not just getting it for free.

There are legitimate ways of making a living.
If a psychic or medium is sincere, s/he could work a day job and practice mediumship in hir spare time.
But, the prospect of using it as an income source is seductive to most. There are certainly people who are willing to pay.

@wisdomist At least you said "I think". Have you done any research in this field? Read any reports of psychical research societies? Mediumship is real. They have even had TV shows.

@wisdomist Have you changed your mind about mediums being frauds? The best judge of a medium is found in the people he reads for, how correct his information is, how much 'evidential' is produced. Mediumship is quite real.
