"How long have I been sleeping...how long have I been drifting along through the night..."
Love the outro guitar solo at 5:05. There are songs that haunt you and speak to human desolation and ultimate sorrow. There are very few songs or lyrics that even come close
to what this song represents. At some level, I'm sure Jackson did not want to even write it.
It was AMAZING!! The 70's is when music had meaning and the singers and musicians were artists. The world was a different and better place. Your right the music of today is mostly worthless trash. Led Zepellin, Janis Ian, Neil Young, Carol King, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, the Who Etc. Etc. Check out the movie, Almost Famous. You get kinda the vibe of what it was like in So Cal in the 1970's. Good tunes in that film
@Pank89 You would like Iain Matthews IF you saw through my eyes like Jackson Browne Seen then both in 1970s in miami most singers today do not compare i agree with u these 2 guys can write and sing check Matthews out
I'll admit I was prompted to look up this song because of the newer Evidence track of the same name. I've fallen in love with this song, though. Anyone got a suggestion for which Browne album I should try to get first?
I love how Scorsese uses music in his films. Mean Streets employs Rubber Biscuit by the Chips to delirious effect. But it's in Taxi Driver where the camera slowly moves into Travis' face, his chest bare, his right hand holding his new crutch, a .357 Magnum revolver with this song underscoring the undeserved loneliness, erotic frustration of a young man in a torturous modern American city. Soul Train that is playing on Travis' television. Black people have found their way, but not Travis.
I hate the image used for this video. It reminds me of 630am after waking up still drunk at a friend of a friend of a friend's house without a wallet. Yet those are the kind of memories that you'd wish you had if you didn't already have them. Does that make sense?
This is amazing heartfelt, gripping music. Incredible how you actually feel an emotion when hearing this song. Listening to the radio these days, you barely know that songs evoking feelings still exist.
I painted my "handle” as a tribute to the eternally perfect “Late for the Sky” and the incredible songs that follow on this brilliant album. They are all beyond words "Fountain of Sorrow,"“The Late Show,” “For a Dancer”...Try to conceive or write any one of these songs... Impossible! It's a perfect album and it's my album...like "Bookends" for the "Old Friends"...everyone I have ever loved and have seen through horror and paradoxically, the best of times are encapsulated in this brilliant album.
@flatop59 Easily some of the tastiest guitar work that I can think of, and completely overlooked. Great observation, and I was thinking much the same thing as I heard this on XM/Sirius on the way home from work tonight. Peace:-)
There is nobody as amazing as Jackson Browne what a gift to the world. His music will forever be discovered for generations to come timeless masterpieces.
Hi, all. I had the honor of attending a last-minute "secret" show by Jackson Browne this week, and videotaped several of his songs from just in front of his keyboard. click on my screen name to head over to my channel. Enjoy! :)
Listened to this song over and over during my first heartbreak some 30 yrs ago, and the words still ring true this time around..."you never knew what i loved in you, i don't know what you loved in me, maybe the picture of somebody you were hoping i might be..." just says it all about a broken relationship, doesn't it? Timeless.
@Donnnnnnny The music now is better than it's ever been, you're just lazy and apathetic. You gotta actually find the good music. When this song came out in 1974, amid the mountains of garbage that makes up the 70's.
@Ruemorgue10 I hope this song changed your mind in doing what you were going to do. Life's worth it man. That's why people need real music. It keeps real people going.

find your girl, hold her tight and write your own best music..it's all about the here and now...
