  • "How long have I been sleeping...how long have I been drifting along through the night..."

Love the outro guitar solo at 5:05. There are songs that haunt you and speak to human desolation and ultimate sorrow. There are very few songs or lyrics that even come close

to what this song represents. At some level, I'm sure Jackson did not want to even write it.

  • You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Well I'm the only one here....

  • Taxi Driver! anybody?

  • Taxi Driver! anybody?

  • That lead guitar player has some killer tone!

  • @donkeyplow David Lindley - he's a stellar slide player with the most insane tone ever!

  • Those harmonies are beautiful..makes the song.

  • It's funny how a rap song (Evidence's "Late For the Sky") brought me here.

  • @SikeMikeT31 really gives you an appreciation for the older stuff. I'm a fan of this song now, props to evidence

  • It was AMAZING!! The 70's is when music had meaning and the singers and musicians were artists. The world was a different and better place. Your right the music of today is mostly worthless trash. Led Zepellin, Janis Ian, Neil Young, Carol King, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, the Who Etc. Etc. Check out the movie, Almost Famous. You get kinda the vibe of what it was like in So Cal in the 1970's. Good tunes in that film

  • @Pank89 You would like Iain Matthews IF you saw through my eyes like Jackson Browne Seen then both in 1970s in miami most singers today do not compare i agree with u these 2 guys can write and sing check Matthews out

  • @Pank89 I hear you, but is anybody else listening??

  • I'll admit I was prompted to look up this song because of the newer Evidence track of the same name. I've fallen in love with this song, though. Anyone got a suggestion for which Browne album I should try to get first?

  • @Jbronn1129 Well, this one's pretty good. This is the title track of the album.

  • I want this to be me and my future husband's song

  • @17lamb no question it would be a great song to share with someone you love

  • @efrankie90 awh! plus it isnt popular so no other couple will prob have this as their song <3

  • this song makes me want to ruminate while holding a gun up to my head

  • @toby099 I wish I didn't find this comment so funny.

  • I can't eve see the sky. too many chemtrails:-(

  • I love how Scorsese uses music in his films. Mean Streets employs Rubber Biscuit by the Chips to delirious effect. But it's in Taxi Driver where the camera slowly moves into Travis' face, his chest bare, his right hand holding his new crutch, a .357 Magnum revolver with this song underscoring the undeserved loneliness, erotic frustration of a young man in a torturous modern American city. Soul Train that is playing on Travis' television. Black people have found their way, but not Travis.

  • This is amazing heartfelt, gripping music. Incredible how you actually feel an emotion when hearing this song. Listening to the radio these days, you barely know that songs evoking feelings still exist.

  • Make your own music....we so desperately need the poets back..

  • I DID AND IT WAS GREAT!

  • I miss you micky !

  • jackson browne is a great singer

jackson browne is a great man

    God bless him

  • I painted my "handle” as a tribute to the eternally perfect “Late for the Sky” and the incredible songs that follow on this brilliant album. They are all beyond words "Fountain of Sorrow,"“The Late Show,” “For a Dancer”...Try to conceive or write any one of these songs... Impossible! It's a perfect album and it's my album...like "Bookends" for the "Old Friends"...everyone I have ever loved and have seen through horror and paradoxically, the best of times are encapsulated in this brilliant album.

  • Nice guitar work from David Lindley! That guy is so underrated as a guitarist...

  • @flatop59 Easily some of the tastiest guitar work that I can think of, and completely overlooked. Great observation, and I was thinking much the same thing as I heard this on XM/Sirius on the way home from work tonight. Peace:-)

  • @flatop59 yes he is. greek fun of david and lover of this sad song for 30 years

  • jackson browne rules forever!

  • Listened to this song over and over during my first heartbreak some 30 yrs ago, and the words still ring true this time around..."you never knew what i loved in you, i don't know what you loved in me, maybe the picture of somebody you were hoping i might be..." just says it all about a broken relationship, doesn't it? Timeless.

  • Why couldn't I have lived during this Era in history... Why did I have to be born during this crap-hole of music

  • @Donnnnnnny

it's still here for you, and thank goodness you had the good taste to find it! I grew up in the 70's and these are still some of my favorite songs.

  • @Donnnnnnny The music now is better than it's ever been, you're just lazy and apathetic. You gotta actually find the good music. When this song came out in 1974, amid the mountains of garbage that makes up the 70's.

  • @Donnnnnnny

We've all been "drifting on through the night," but yes there are no heartache tunes like this now,

find your girl, hold her tight and write your own best music..it's all about the here and now...

    write your best song.

  • @Donnnnnnny That's the great thing about music. It really is timeless.

  • @Donnnnnnny yes yes i often wonder the very same thing.

  • @Donnnnnnny You're still alive...you can still listen to it...be thankful for that my friend!

  • @Donnnnnnny it was a wonderful era to grow up in indeed

  • @Donnnnnnny Who cares? You can enjoy his music today and forever.

  • @Donnnnnnny There may be more great music out there now than ever before. Discovering it is the trick, and not an easy one at that.

  • @Donnnnnnny You are right and I am sorry you weren't. At least you can still enjoy a master's work here.

  • my all time favourite song by jb, this brings back so many good memories..love you jb!

  • Jackson Browne will always be number 1...

  • I am listening to this with a .44 magnum in my hand.

  • @Ruemorgue10 its not that bad. time heals all pain.

  • @Ruemorgue10 its not that bad. time heals all pain. travis knows this too.

  • @Ruemorgue10 Idiot.

  • @Ruemorgue10 I hope this song changed your mind in doing what you were going to do. Life's worth it man. That's why people need real music. It keeps real people going.

  • TAXI DRIVER!!

  • @qz90 Yes ! I love that part, Da Niro with a loaded gun in front of the Tv set, then smashing it ! What a psycho, I love it !

  • Best album ever recorded. Chronicles my life. Never can hear it enough..

  • I never get tired of this song..and I've been listing to it since the first cut back in the day...."Now for me some words come easy" - JB

    JC

  • @namdacsemaj Feels like a life time ago.

  • @2boredagain It was a lifetime ago, like vinyl, 8 track, or cassette, vs CD & iPod - smile..

  • @2boredagain

yes it does, but the words still describe my heartache every time i've loved a lost

  • Jackson Browne = Best songwriter of my lifetime BY FAR.

  • This is... I adore this song, but I .....Love...Miss Minogue... and I'll never, ever, be able to tell her...
