yeah there is also a promo video for the Shock Doctorine somewhere on youtube. In my playlists you can also find a recent interview with her. You might like to look at Žižek as well..
If you were apart of the 1% that possesses 40% of the worlds wealth, I bet you wouldn't mind more space to kick back and relax, so every decade or so it's time to trim the hedge, mow the lawn, so who's the first to go? Probably those, who aren't hip to the global market movement. I wish there was no market, just pure philanthropy, how satisfying. Man I'm stoned. But seriously, profit is the carrot, nothing more, that's a motivation for a peon, not a ruler.
"Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power."
- Benito Mussolini
Basically, in the 1930s, the fascists worked from the government side of the equation. They took over governments and then tried to merge corporate power under their control.
This time around, it's coming from the opposite direction. The corporations are buying up the government and the nation, merging government under their control.
Hey I haven't read the shock doctrine but I've seen a bunch of interviews with Naomi Klein and I would say it's probably solid. She just did some interviews on TheRealNews which is a great channel here if you aren't aware of it. She also a regular on Democracy Now which I watch on yt as well on the channel IWantDemocracyNow.
The prison system here is an industry all by itself. The problem is exactly what you said.... putting the "public good" into the hands of private industry. Capitalism and public service are diametrically opposed ideas. It's insane.
I think the world as a whole is collectively slipping into insanity.
Another great video Sean, private prisons are not a good idea. Economically for them they would wan't set up the eviornment of the prison such as the prisoner won't behave, that way they won't get out early on good behaviour, the longer the prionser is in jail the more money they make. Also it's not in their economic interst to rehabilitate the prisoners, that way they send out people who are more likely to reafend and sent back to jail for them to make more money.
I wonder if it's an inability, or rather inculcated suspicion, loathing and enmity against anything outside of 'their' box. It's probably both to varying degrees, but the latter can be attacked and dealt with. The former calls for pity and mercy and patience and help.
yup, market is not the answer. it's the question. is value on paper or paper about value? does every supply have the right to demend? and is owning the same thing that exists? etc, etc, etc...
Brilliant video Sean - you nailed it. The UK has been privatising everything it can since the eighties and the knock on effects are unbelievably depressing. The priority of hospitals, prisons, schools, care homes etc. is to make a profit and nothing else.
But the yanks are best at it. The construction of their rail network at the end of the 19th century cost double what it should have due to corrupt privateers.
Consumerism will be our downfall as a species. Scientists have been saying since the 60's that the planet is over populated and that we are the threat to ourselves, yet nationalism keeps pumping home the importance of a burgeoning economy which is dependent on a growing population. Something has got to give. That give is normally shit like crime, war and over sensitive security situations.
George Carlin talked about in some of his stand up about getting off on the misery of others which is the essence of comedy(ie:the banana peal gag). The Jerry Springer factor. "At least my life is not as messed up as theirs."
"Ghosts of the Civil Dead": yaaaay to that soundtrack. One of the most ethereal and haunting soundtracks for an Australian film since "Picnic at Hanging Rock".
Boo to Nick Cave drawing porographic pictures in his own blood, though...

Either way, you end up with Mussolini's "Corporatism" - the only difference is who's holding the reigns.
Thus, the increasing similarity of all this to '30s fascism is, unfortunately, to be expected.
It's basically the same destination. But they're taking a different route to get there, is all.

The 'warm bodies' and 'shopping mall war' analogies could be applied to the war on drugs here in the states.

I think the 21st century is going to be less bloody than the 20th, but still pretty horrifying by anyone's standards.
