  • 19th century lathe = Heavy Metal!

  • Can anyone refer me to a tutorial for spinning trumpet bells out of .020" brass disks? It's not as easy as it looks! Also, I am looking for pre-formed bell mandrels. Thanks!

  • Hello guys ! I would like to make a 4 inch diameter copper alloy rocket nozzle using 4,5 inch copper pipe...is this possible ? Would it be better to heat the pipe or not ? I would also like to learn this trade. Pointers, info, recomendation please....THX !

  • Well done- is it possible to turn stainless steel if it is thin enough?

  • Hello HybridWaterMan2, I am not sure, I work mostly in wood! I think if the metal is thin and malable it should work but seek some expert advice before you try it,

    With best wishes, Stuart King

  • @cesking Thanks Stuart- that is what I am researching now...keep up the great work.

  • @HybridWaterMan2 yes you can turn stainless steel. Its done a lot. Generally thin gage stainless, but thicker can be done. Sometimes you have to firespin that sucker!

  • @metalmullisha990 - firespin? Is that a method of applying a wide torch to it as it spins to anneal it a bit?

  • Hello my question is the point of contact, the handtool most be static or is a wheel

    keep turning?

  • Dear TheMatrisa, The point of contact is like a solid ball, it does not rotate but a light oil is aplied to the metal to aid lubrication and to cut out friction; I hope this helps, Stuart King

  • I can't resist. Please, get the man a pair of safety glasses. Watching someone using machine tools with a bare face just gives me the creeps. He has obviously been getting along okay for many years. Maybe I am just uptight. Still, protect your eyes!

  • Good one thank you
