  • I'm playing this for one of my friends. She has an AMAZING voice! :D

  • Gross...Sullivan knew what he's doing, this crap is insulting and stupid. Her voice is not much either. Burn the negative.

  • @resborzage Its' really frustrating when people think that just because G&S is in the public domain, they have to take it upon themselves to "improve" it. Shakespeare has the same problem. People need to realize that if it needed to be fixed, we wouldn't remember it today in the first place.

  • That was incredible. It will remain a regret that i didn't get to see that in person. Wow. Love it.

  • Man, fuck this shit.

  • What the heck is up with the music? It totally takes away from her voice.

  • who's the stud

  • Jeez, 3:29, she just hangs out on that E-flat! I'm auditioning for this role next summer, I've got work to do. My gosh =O

  • the real star of this show is the person who made those wigs...

  • AH. I got this part. I'm going to need to work REEAALLY hard..

  • k im definitely not trying out for THIS part

  • Sublime. But the silly chorus has to go.

  • i love when performers actually take cadenzas! It's upsetting how easy she makes this song sound. Her voice is perfect for this role.

  • Helen Donaldson is WONDERFUL!!!!

  • Amazing voice!!!

  • I have to sing this for my play o.O

  • Oh, my God. I think an angel dropped from heaven, dressed up in Mabel's costume, and sang this. But they made it very funny, too!

  • Oh my God! Stunned by this womans voice!! It sounds so utterly perfect!! x

  • Look at her support at 2:26. You can see it through her dress. Crazy. I love it.

  • @bmrhea92 I had a friend who sang this role. I asked her how on earth she did the staccato. She showed me by twitching her diaphragm like crazy. I could see it going up and down under her shirt!

  • incredible.

  • Wow.

  • The score has a D-flat as the highest, but I'm pretty sure that last note is an E-flat she threw in because she's awesome haha.

  • @keckm88 Just confirmed by playing along on a keyboard - it is scored for Db, but she cheekily reaches up to Eb on two occasions (1:28 - 1:30 and 3:29 - 3:33).

  • WHat's that high note that she hits? Isn't it a high e-flat?

  • @that0girl0ash I'm preparing this piece for a performance, and it's only a high Db

  • @that0girl0ash yesss it is. (:

  • Goal =set. I will sing like this someday.

  • 3:27 - My Monitor cracked xD

  • Wowzer!

  • I aspire to sing like Helen Donaldson. HOLY GEEZ she is so talented!

  • i've watched it at least 50 times on vhs ( YES! i said vhs, so much so it tore & tore alike... many times in fact & now it's dead ). So all i've got is YOUTUBE... Damn! I can't say how much the australian version rocks... & rolls, all night long sweet susie!?

  • Excellent performance! Really classy!

  • Pretty good - nails the coloratura parts

  • i love it when hes nees buckled

  • Helen Donaldson is fantastic and beautiful. An excellent performance!

  • amazing....

  • JIZZED IN MY PANTS

  • i git all the notes when i preformed this it was aqward

  • I get to play Mabel soon in my school's production of this. =)

    I love the high notes!

  • @IrishBirdy1

    no you cant.

  • This is the tryout song for my school..... I CAN DO IT! :D

  • Such a thing would normally annoy me, but I'm strangely taken with the way they modernised the orchestration of this number too.......Very tasty indeed!

  • I LOVE this girls's performance of this . I've never heard of her before but she's obviously a pro and bloody good, so I assume she's very well known in more knowledgable theatrical circles....??

I'd like to see and hear more.......

  • We are doing Pirates of Penzence at school for our production, I have to sing Poor Wandering one!

  • @asdf1974zz Have to?

  • wow she has a gorgeous voice! :)

  • omg australian yay! =D

  • Excellent!

  • The young soprano has a lovely voice, but I hate how they mess with the tempo. It's a waltz. Save the pauses for the cadenzas.

  • wonderful! so effortless...

  • The camera rightly focusses on HD's Mabel who is beautiful and talented. Unfortunately her grotesque sisters could be straight out of Cinderella, which makes it a mystery how General Stanley can declare "all of them are beauties".

  • @cuddlyable3 He doesn't - the line is rewritten so that all of them, bizarrely, are Presbyterians!

  • @cuddlyable3 That's kind of the point? It's a humorous operetta after all

  • Whatever might be done to Gilbert - Sullivan shines through!

  • I love this so much. Such a fantastic scene. Not only because she is a fabulous singer, but because she gets to do basically what he had done just previously to her sisters - be like "Look at me and my fabulousness while you stand there and watch me and wait". Take that, Fred :D.

  • @AlexiaDark Yes. That is EXACTLY what she does. Well put.

  • he looks like he has to pee at 3:27

  • lol i love how he drops his bag when she hits the high note in the middle XDD

  • @foreverxelizabeth i highly doubt your teacher would give a 12 year old a level 6 piece to do. it took me 2 years to get this song perfect

  • @s2broadwaybabys2 Well he did, Its a junior's play..were not going broadway or anything so just shut up.

  • @ForeverxElizabeth i was just saying. god. but seriously hes including the top e too??

  • @s2broadwaybabys2: They are probably doing Pirates of Penzance Jr. My school did this last year, and the song is placed in a different octave and shortened. It was actually very easy to sing. And I'm singing the real version of this right now in my vocal lessons, and I'm only 14. It's not truly very difficult, if you can hit that E like I can.

  • @POTOPhan13 the maturity of the voice changes so much between age 12 and age 14

  • what is the note she hits at the very end?

  • Top E flat !

  • Wow I love that modern percussion addition!

  • Oh god. I have to do this, Im a 12 year old 6th grader. I hate my teacher fer givin me this part!!

  • I'm 12 years old and what is this?

  • ultimafats@ Its from Gilbert and Sullivans Pirates of Penzance. I performed in this light hearted operetta at boarding school in 1960 - long before you were born

  • Fantastic!

  • wow =|

i'm doing this for my grade 8 singing

    *gulps*

  • @xoxpenguinxox haha. me too. im so scared because I actually have a low singing voice for a girl

  • 'THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE"...thumbs up if you remember :-)

  • Well I thought it was nice!

  • amazing it is dificult if you do not have the proper traning to hit those notes

  • **notes.

No clue why i spelt nights

  • the last nights to this song always remind me of The cadenza in Phantom (Think of Me)

  • If you watch Al Gore and listen to this song, it's like beer in a bottle.... Brilliant!

  • she has the most effortless soprano!

  • what character is this singing? the girl at the begining?

  • @squirrelover1 Mable :)

  • I just found out my high school is gonig to be donig this next year, and lately I have really been trying ot improve my soprano singing voice, and this now is just completel motivation!

  • This is brilliant! I cannot wait to audition for this part in the spring!

  • i have the dvd :) its amazin.

  • this is our play this year ^-^

  • Helen Donaldson, the voice of an angel

  • its an aussie version, very funny, fantastic , i`m sure G and S would have approved!

  • This soprano is awesome....but what the heck is wrong with the orchestra? is it midi recording or something w/ drumset just thrown in for fun? I can't handle it.

  • Thank you! I finally actually understand the piece. I haven't seen anyone else portray the actual point of the song - thank you for being the first person I've seen to actually tell the story.

  • Wow she is such a good singer! The orchestra was a little weird though

  • Not only is Mabel's voice perfect but her Marionette- type movements suit this scene perfectly too!

  • Brilliant!

  • My bestfriend was her in a play at camp and apparently she was amazing!

  • that girl has mad talent!!!.....oh, and at 3:16 he looks like he's gotta pee. that was amazing.

  • lol! haha he kinda does.

  • XD IT soooooooooooo does!!!!

  • I just wish that someone would post the version by Valerie Masterson on YouTube.. For me. that will always be the definitive version of this song.

  • Me. too. I have looked all over the internet for it to buy...if you happen to know who owns the rights, please share!

  • i actually think all G&S plays are free to the public domain...

  • btw..this woman is absurdly talented...the best Mabel I've ever heard actually

  • Agreed. She is AWESOME!

  • what note can shater glass, and how close is she

  • the shattering glass things happens when the sound frequency matches that of the glass...

theoretically it can happen on any pitch, if the sound is loud enough...the higher the note, the less loud it needs to be...thats why it really only happens with sopranos...and it virtually never does...

also, its too loud for our humans to stand, and would hurt everyone's ears...so theres no point in doing so

  • that was really beautiful ... and quite hilarious hehe

  • brava

  • This is AMAZING!!!!

  • i am 13 and i can hit that high note...but its not easy!

  • Cute

  • lol i like how he always acts as if he is going off and then at last he is positively bewitched..... hahahah :D

  • sorry gallaher about that lost chance for a kiss lol

  • i like this version of the song because there isn't a ton of vibrato.... :)

  • she has a wonderful voice

I love how she sings the one high note and the guy drops his bag lmao! :)

  • Daaaaamn... How on EARTH do you hit that last note? That was waaaaaaaaaay too high.

  • Not really....

  • ugh.. that drum music crap is effing awful. Yes Gilbert and Sullivan are silly but sometimes have some really profoundly lovely moments in the music. The drum machine really kills that.

  • i agree! ugh.

  • yeah thats one of the worst bits about this remake - although the singing, particularly helen donaldson, is great.

  • I'm doing this song for my senior solo and I'm very excited to sing it, especially after hearing this version. This is the best one I've found so far. Bravo. :)

  • i'm liking this Mabel...and the e flat makes me melt. haha

  • Nice high E flat, by the way.

  • Maybel's voice was awesome. I like the added humor also. I also enjoyed this one by a Junior High in: Singing4Disney Poor Wandering One!

  • the voices of mabel and frederic are really great, but i dislike that this version of this musical is sometimes very silly

  • Yes, well. I'd be upset if someone did this to some really serious opera, but you have to remember that Gilbert and Sullivan were really just trying to be silly. It was a different audience, but this is by no means entirely-serious music.

I'm offended by the Broadway version because it feels like it's trying to be good and failing. This one is trying to be irreverent and, in my humble opinion, succeeding, so I'm fine with it.

  • Beautiful

  • one of the best mabels i have seen, her and frederic are the only operatic characters in this production.

  • i cant lie.ive seen too many of these versions of Pirates where theyve up'd the comedy and added all this extra "modern" stuff meant for humor but it took alot from the music and dance that can really be done.and in my opinion its cuz its too hard for anyone to do well the original way it was made.which is a shame.

  • that's what we get with public domain stuff...

  • I'm playing Mabel in my school play. It's the junior version, though, so I don't have to hit all those high notes =]

  • Great. Its funny and she has a beautiful voice. I actually didn't mind the doo-wop chorus girls on this particular song. I hated them in the Mikado though; the songs were practically unrecognizable.

  • Definately. I agree.

  • It's a sendup of opera that also works as opera. She's really good! But why is the chorus played by men? And why are wearing beehives - is that a postmodern reference to the Supremes?

  • I don't *think* they're men, I know they look borderline but I'm fairly sure they're women in drag makeup.

  • actually, it is a operetta, and its meant to be humorus. maybe every version you saw was directed by someone with a stick up their butt.

  • is that a freaking tape playing most of the orchestral part? oh man, you musical theater people are so weird..

  • Haha..We're not weird! lol It's a synthesizer, I think.

  • I did that song for my Grade 7 exam

  • she did great!!! i got callbacks for mabel and im going in on monday!!! so nervous!!!

  • this is soo high!

  • So silly and fun. :D

I love the part where the guy twiddles his fingers in time to the music. I hope his voice is as good as his acting. :)

  • im auditioning for this musical and this is my auditioning piece....

    monday! can't wait

  • I think she's awesome. Her voice is amazing and she pulls the greatest facial expressions. She and Simon Gallaher have really good chemistry together as well

  • wow...that's amazing...

  • I LOVE this! I sang this last year, and this performance is great!

  • pancakes a little sugar and lemon juice, beautifull.

  • If you're assesing this as opera, you're making an ass of yourself. Donaldson is making a brilliant blend between classical and musical theatre styles. Of all the characters I think Mabel would've had the most trouble adapting the style vocally without doing something unhealthy or just flat out ugly. Beautiful diction! You can actually understand every word, something I cannot say for most of the classical Mabels I've heard, but we're not comparing her to classical Mabels, are we?

  • As for substance, she is a beautiful lyric colouratura. Notice the dynamic control at the top of that bugger of a melisma! Georgeous!

If you're taking the purist approach, you're perfectly entitled to that, but then your beef should be with the director, not the actor. At any rate, THIS IS MUSICAL THEATRE PEOPLE! Take your pretty little rules elsewhere.

  • This is one of those shows where people argue whether it's a musical, operetta, or an opera. I see it as an operetta, like Candide. People fight over what Candide is, too.

  • my favorite part is when he drops the bag.

  • That was beautiful. E flat just right on.

  • Fantastic exept for the Little Shop Of Horrors beat to daughter's parts.

    That was stupid.

  • Her vibrato changes tempo. It is a bit distracting, but she is lovely for the most part.

  • This is my favorite version of this song I have heard. Her voice is absolutely superb, and I love that she doesn't slide at all (unlike Linda Ronstadt)! Lovely and refreshing.

  • this song is absolutley adorable

  • Fabulous performances, very funny and Helen Donaldson has a beautiful voice, but I must admit I don't like the "shoop-shoop" and the fill-in and beat under "Take heart, no danger lowers". I'm a purist, I'm afraid. SHE was stunning, though.

  • shes awsome...im pretty much in love with this girl...

  • Her high notes are SO clear! Wow. But, I have to agree, katesinger, the orchestrations were a little much.

  • her vibratto is a little off-pitch...

  • She is one of the best Mables I have ever heard and I have heard a lot!

This is my faveourite production of Pirates ever.

I adore the fact they slowed the refrain so whenever the music went up to the top B she slowed. It makes it a lot more poignant (and harder to sing lol)

  • re you kidding me she is soo superb its not even funny, she doesn't slide at all no 14 year old girls voice can be that great

  • @silentsmokeNIN How would you know what makes a singer 'superb'? You obviously don't sing this kind of repertoire yourself, or you would not make that type of comment.

  • how wonderful her voice is! katesinger, do you have to rag on EVERYBODYS singing> evry comment ive seen of yours is insulting. i mean, iff you dont like it get up off your butt and make one thats better! jesus... anyway Helen Doladson is the MOST FABULOUS Mabel i think i have seen so far. and about the music change- each production is different. there have even been hiphop versions of this show. Helen Donaldson, you are brilliantly wonderful and i hope someday my voice will measure up to yours!!

  • wonderful voice....

  • This is such a great interpretation and that voice is amazing, I love it!!

  • well she was an extremely bright star shining thru all of that. the orchestration was rubbish. with drums! what were they thinking. and those girls in the background...wat a terrible interpretation! didnt fit at all with gilbert and sullivan. but mabel was terrific!

  • she warbles like a bird, but her high notes are exquistely beautiful!

  • The sisters have wandered in from the pantomime next door!

  • Remarkable, bravo!

  • i hate the sisters in this play that tried 2 turn pirates of penzance into grease

  • I agree. Its bothersome, Pirates of Penzance is not grease!

  • This is my favorite "You Tube" version of this song. She is awesome!

  • yes, she is exquisite in every way, and Frederic is good too in spite of being really skinny.. But the sisters.....I dunno...they're kinda weird you must admit!
