The true story:
Owen had done this stunt before, and McMahon wasn't pleased with the release being so hard to undo the first time, so he had a quick-release system set up before Over the Edge 1999 so that the entrance could be more efficient. Before his planned descent, Owen was adjusting the cape of his Blue Blazer costume and his elbow mistakenly hit the quick release. RIP Owen.
