  • I'm just gonna say that Josh Ritter is insanely sexy but moreover he's one beautiful singer/songwriter <3

  • @lowflyer54 Music!

  • I saw him live at Bluesfest in Ottawa... absolutely amazing.

  • There should be an auto repeat button. Fantastic musician. Comparable lyricist to David Ford. Give him a search. Fantastic multi instrumentalist songwriter!

  • Its Yahoo..speak your mind and take your lumps...

  • I love the Biblical references, "peter said to Paul you know all those words we wrote, are just the rules of the game and the rules are the first to go." this line is so true.

  • Can we please stop bringing up religion on Youtube? All it does is start arguments. Thank God nobody here is arguing yet.

  • @LinksGreenHat13 You weren't helping. But there's this thing we have called freedom of speech. We will do what we want. Perhaps if you want no religion, you shouldn't be reading comments on a song with Biblical references.

  • @ObliviousAreWe ...Wow, you totally misinterpreted my statement. I am one of the most religious 14 year olds I know. I was just saying that whenever someone brings up religion on Youtube, someone else comes in and starts bashing that person for having beliefs. And....I believe that my statement (no matter how you interpret it) shows my freedom of speech, which you shouldn't be taking away from me. No more arguing, and God bless.

  • @LinksGreenHat13 oops. I meant 15...i was in an angry kinda fast typing mode. =)

  • @ObliviousAreWe I don't see the religious overtones at all really.

  • I don't appreciate all of the religious messages in his songs.

  • @proff327 its anti religous .....

  • @gregclark13 My bad. I tried looking online since I'm not deep enough to interpret lyrics and wasn't successful. I just assumed I guess.

  • @gregclark13 Good.

  • @proff327 I don't appreciate you putting religion into everything you see.

  • @proff327 Then listen to someone else. Durp.

  • Anne Frank was a girl in the war

  • Demasiado buena la canción

    epic

  • thumbs up if you're seeing him August 11th

  • highly recommend looking up Matthew Good's version of This song on Youtube = amazing

  • hmm reminds me of cat stevens with a lil don mclean slick i think

  • Who would like a totally unique woodburnt portrait of Josh Ritter that has been signed by the man himself for $5? Raffles are selling now for Save the Kimberley organisation to help save the prestine region of outstanding natural beauty in the far North West of Australia from industrialisation.

Checkout CIRCLE OF ONE FOUNDATION (dot) ORG (dot) AU and click on events for more details!...

  • On a literal level--so nice to have a man sing about his girl in the war. A new twist.

Figuratively, I think the song is very anti-religious.The rules Peter and Paul wrote are gone; the kingdom in inaccessible because of a mindless accident. The religion Peter and Paul created has led to war and loss. Peter, the one who needed women, struggles while Paul, the hardcore one who saw little value in women, tries to encourage him to keep the faith [at a cost-being a rock]. Is the girl Joan of Arc?

  • @sjgade my exact thoughts as well

  • <3

  • i know this song is about a girl in the war... but my brother is in afghanistan now, and this song reminds me of him.. god keep him safe, please.

  • From songmeanings (dot) net. By gossy, 05-28-2006. [This song is] a clear anti-war statement. Breaking the rules of the game and “the girl in the war” suggests a breaking of a “no women, no children” type of statute. In current wars, our international rules of conduct are broken; civilian casualties often outnumber those of military forces. The need to “rock yourself a little harder” & the reference to a dove suggests the need to actively protest and not just believe blindly in peace [dove].

  • @CommentsSurvey I suppose it could be a double meaning he's using, but he says 'the dove from above' and with the addition of the conversation between Peter and Paul, he's gotta be referring to the Holy Spirit, which appears as a dove in the Bible on one occasion

  • @kingdom78 : could be. It's quite a song, really. Never heard any lyrics like this before.

  • This is too good. Just saying.

  • just chillin in joshua tree haha i love this song!

  • If i was gay i would be all over this man. I'm not kidding, and i REALLY love boobs.

  • i have so many magical memories with this song, and i've always listened to it to re-live those memories, but then it hit me - i would have loved this song anyway, because this is possibly one of the best songs ever written.

  • FOLK in HELL, top song.....

  • Still rocks me to the core.

  • Great song; it can reference so many things in life. "War" could mean fighting sins, sickness, or literal war. Awesome song =-) brilliant.

  • Love. This song!

  • i hate the way country artists sing, but this guys voice, as similar as it may be to country, has something interesting about it. i like it :)

  • 23 people have never had any obstacle to overcome, and don't realize how beautiful and fragile life really is.

<3 have had this in my head for days and I am not annoyed in the slightest.

Love and luck to everyone here :)

  • I'm a girl in the war and the only thing I know to do is turn up the music and pray that I make it through. And those that didn't know how to help can go to hell...life, and losing your health has to be one of the biggest wars you fight in life. It is also one of the most transforming experiences one can go through...

  • @socrponygirl23 argh! i wish i knew he was in town. it would (and was probably) have been fantastic. so glad he's out and about.

  • Oh man, I love this song.

  • I have a girl in the war and her eyes are like champagne. She has a bone marrow transplant tomorrow. I heard this song 3 years ago when she almost died from the chemo. this song is so much how you feel when the only thing in your life is suffering.

  • One Of The Most Meaningful Songs..!!!Love It!!

  • I love this song so much :) He didnt play this at the concert I wnet to,but I'm fine with that...

  • @mundanejane550 I do not understand this comment. Well, I'm just a stupid Belgian....

  • @MultiBert07

HE Double Hockey sticks is how silly people say "hell"

  • @mundanejane550 Okay, I found it online.

And well may they go to HE Double Hockey sticks. And never come back.

Besides all that: I like the song.

  • I also noticed that several comments have been removed.

I think I can safely assume those were written by some of those 21 people that disliked your song.

  • I see that 21 people disliked this song.

I assume that are the people pro war and military control; the ones who always say that one HAS to fight for his country but stay safely at home themselves, far behind enemy lines, danger and fear.

Try to neglect them. Sing your song!

  • @MultiBert07

I see your opinion and I agree with most of it. Personally I love the song, but sometimes people simply dislike the song, not its lyrical content. I for one dislike lyrics because sometimes instruments alone make me feel a certain way about a song. That feeling doesn't have to be love or loneliness, but when the lyrics direct it that way sometimes you get pulled into a feeling that you just don't share.

  • @loveisntlost I got chills when I read that. Stay strong -- love

  • Great song! reminds me of "Heirloom" by Brandon Snipes

  • fn real

  • its true that peter and paul are both biblical names, but this song is not their story. i can think of five or six reasons why this is clear, and back it with Scripture. think of these characters as two modern songwriters, paul who wants to write and rock harder; and peter who likes acoustic political and antiwar songs.

  • @stevieluvn1

Actually I believe he is referring to the Peter and Paul who wrote books in the Bible. Peter was the known as "the rock" of the early Catholic church so that's why the lyric "Paul said to Petey you got to rock yourself a little harder" is a clever one. Also the rules of the game they wrote refers to bible and how all the ways you are supposed to live go out the window when dire situations occur such as having a girl in the war.

  • @fharmo1

Not to mention that the original wordplay comes from the meaning of the name Peter: in Attic Greek, "petros" means "rock", from which the name Peter derives (as well as the English word "petrify", among others).

  • @fharmo1 The Peter & Paul he's referring to are the Republicans and Democrats bickering while our soldiers go overseas and fight.

  • I love this song soooo much I love when he sings "her eyes are like champagne they sparkle bubble over and in the morning all you got it is rain" you can't help but get goosebumps......amazing!!!!

  • beautiful

  • wow

  • I love everything about this song. His voice is amazing, I love how the guitar is played! makes me think of music from the 60's. I can't wait for him to become a household name! : )

  • I don't care for the religious lyrics or undertones of the song but I really this music and style of song.

  • prachtig

  • Amazing song! I need to see him next time he's in the UK!

If you like Josh Ritter you might also like my music. I'm an alt-country songwriter based in the UK (but origonally from Ireland). Check out the vids on my profile and let me know what you think!

  • Tallest man on Earth is better

  • @electrichealinghands

Josh has a better voice--natural and free. I like TMOE's songs, but his voice is too manipulated.

  • Why would anyone dislike this? Josh Ritter is destined to be the next Jeff Buckley or Bob Dylan... he's magic.

  • @rainsurfer Definitely not Bob Dylan, but Josh Ritter is good.

  • He is awesome! But I like Sarah Sample better! Check Sarah out!

  • Everything about this song is so insanely beautiful that it's impossible to describe.

  • I'm going to see him tomorrow :) <3

  • @ShireBaggins123 Where?

Going to see him in an hour and a half ! :)

  • Really great song. Long time since I've been surprised by music. Class.

  • Just Fantastic i'm just after discovering Mr Ritter starting with old stuff ``,

  • this is so beautiful. the lyrics, the tune and chords, the video.. all of it! i'm only 14, but he's always going to be my favourite artist.

  • awesome

  • I think the song is more literal than people are making it. He's got a girl in the war and is praying for her to get back safe. He's begging for help from " above" while at the same time questioning how "above" could allow her to even be in the war in the first place. Great song no matter what.

  • That's true, but it's that I think this song doesn't just refer to religion on a few occasions. Every sentence can be interpreted in a way in which it is linked to religion.

  • Ah.. Melxar already did link this song to religion, in a rather different way though.

  • Doesn't anyone link this song to religion? Maybe it's just me.. Couldn't Paul and Peter be Paulus and Petrus. Horrible things happen in the world, such as the girl in the war. How could you explain that while there is a good and almighty god? By assuming that this life is a test and the afterlife could be better if you behave well? I think the singer means with 'turn up the music and pray that she makes it through' that he doesn't care about this supposed test anymore. He just wants to see her.

  • A lot of things use biblical/religious symbolism... it usually doesn't mean that it's about religion.

  • I have a girl in the war too. She's in the first trimester of pregnancy. Now that's a bloody battle!!

  • josh ritter grew up in the town i live in

  • september 23rd cannot get here fast enough.

    he is so fantastic.

  • @LightDragon: When I hear this song, I picture two young soldiers, one of whom is missing a girl back home that he's in love with. He's remembering simpler times, and his friend is trying to console him. Their lives as soldiers is not what they expected it to be, and they both want to go home. They are doing all that they can do to cope, which is to be there for each other. This song is brilliant not only for the lyrics but because it can be also used metaphorically

  • Dedicated to my 91 year old Mom that is as sweet as sugar. She was possibly raped and according to the 800 pages of medical transcripts beat to pulp. Going into the 4th year of the fight to make the attornies lots of money. Does ANYONE care about elderly abuse?

  • Excellent song! Can't wait to see him in London!

  • Im sick with admiration..

  • haha love this song :) makes me smile. reminds me of my girlfriend even tho im the soldier at war. because she calls me a girl because she wears the pants in our house haha :) cant wait to get home to her, love you so much lauren xxxx

  • "they sparkle bubble over in the morning all you've got is rain..."

  • @rainkinggw I love that lyric too! Josh is a pure poet. I hear he's writing a book, which will be fantastic.

This song reminds me of Sunday mornings, when you wake up and the house is silent, and you can lie in bed and listen to the rain pattering on the window.

Off topic: I've written some poetry, could some of you look check it out? The link is on my page. Josh and his sublime lyrics inspired me to start writing.

  • this is a great song, but the video is disappointing...

  • Beautiful...I am battling cancer right now and the man I love is turning up the music for me and hoping the angels help <3 never related to a song so much as I have to this right now. Love You my rock star ~ here's to a beautifu future xxxx

  • @goddesssugar Youtube The Rick Simpson Story and spread it around like Cancer.

  • @goddesssugar Have best luck. Stay always good!

  • @goddesssugar Here's to that, because you will have one!

  • tonight at the Music Box!

  • i disagree, he is not the next Bob Dylan.

no one is the 'next' bob dylan.

a really good artist who is close to the style of Dylan,

    is Joe Pug.

Although, Josh Ritter is A Good Muscian and Songwriter.

  • @messmeup77 In my opinion Bob Dylan is overrated. Real good songwriters are Ryan Adams, Paul Simon, Josh Ritter, Jesse Malin and so on.

  • you are a silly goose if you ever pass up a chance to see Josh live, you will never see a more entertaining, interactive show! I saw him on 5-13 in Atlanta and had the chance to meet him and chat with him for about 10 mins. they come no better than Josh (and Josh hugs are the best hugs on earth)....Dawn Landes, his wife, was with him and she is also a fantastic artist in her own right.

  • @RyMahon not necessarily "my thing" but i think it's good music... along with some rock music, folk music, rap (good rap DOES exist), and most all other genre's... i don't think there's a single genre that i could say "yea that's good music" because actually my guess is that about 95% of every genre is crap (99% of some genres)

  • @RyMahon agreed... but someone doesn't have to be a legend to make good music :)

  • The next Bob Dylan

  • ah how this song warms my heart

  • To Kathleen, my Best Friend since I was 4. She fought cancer till the last day of her life as if nothing was wrong. I love you Kathy.

  • sparkle bubble over over

  • He may not be Irish but Josh Ritter is really popular in Ireland. And deservedly so.
