I can only say that after seeing the 'Hoods more than 200 times that somehow I still do feel as if they were mishandled, redirected...something, I dunno. The '79 Rumble at The Rat cassette, in my opinion, is one of the greatest live rock sets of all time. I'm old and I've heard a bunch. As Oedipus said in his intro for the rumble, "they put the hood back in rock and roll, The Neighborhoods!"
@dambtheman1 Boston was too far ahead of the curve. Look at Mission of Burma. Happy to say the first non-arena show I ever saw was the Neighborhoods in the early 80's.
The Neighborhoods are playing tomorrow night. The Neighborhoods wsg Thinner and Super 400 (yeah!) Ralph's Diner Worcester, MA Dec 15, 2007 9pm - $15 Burma For Burma Benefit w/ Mission Of Burma and The Neighborhoods Sunday, January 20th, 2008 Great Scott 1222 Commonwealth Ave. Allston, MA 02134 $15, 21+, 9PM Doors
Hard to emphasize how gutsy it was in the late 70s for Minehan to rock out with nothing but jeans, sneakers, a tight shirt and his talent. I didn't live in Boston at the time, but I have to imagine he took a huge amount of shit for it. Quite an original.
Crazy -- Neighborhoods at the Rat in 79 ! And after all these years, they still smoke !
It has to be said that back in 1979, The Neighborhoods arrived on the already crowded Boston music scene like a detonation. This video really captures what they were like back then, so raw and exuberant; little wonder why Bowie was quoted that year as saying that The Neighborhoods were his favorite American band...
So damn awesome.
