In1988 I climbed upto the "chequer board" as seen around 1.20 in this clip. There was a very mad dog behind a barb wire fence! Settled for a vantage point a few meters lower and watched landings as the sun went down over the islands in the distance......pretty cool view. I suffered vertigo like sensations when walking back down the steep narrow steps on the side of concreted hill.....was worth the trip up though!

I remember taking off from Kai Tak a couple of times back in 1982. On one flight, we were ascending when the engines seemed to go silent and the plane started to fall. I started white-knuckling the arms of my seat. I don't know why but it was apparently normal for the pilot to ease off power and let the aircraft descent for a few moments. Hong Kong in the early 80's, what a great a time. At the luxurious Chungking Mansions at that!

1) Look for a thing called "Parachute" it usually looks like a duffel-bag, but opens like an umbrella, which you dangle from.

2) Don't let the passengers see you with it, otherwise they'll know you're bailing out on them, and they wont let you make that move.

..when i watch some of the videos i think the same thing, cos, its almost like losing the pilots able to make a perfect 'Kai Tak' landing (which i think are some of the coolest landings, by the way, especially in crosswind conditions). but then again, it was one of the most dangerous airports in the world...and in aviation, safety comes first...its a pity to not have it anymore, though...

well, when its on autopilot its pretty easy, 36kt crosswind lands at Kai Tak are pretty hard, I suggest you buy a flight simulator like FSX, then buy the PMDG 747-400, that'll be about as real as it gets if you don't have a pilots license ;)
