A good song. The concept of the band was kind of strange but I like the song and the band sounds good and yes, as was mentioned previous, Elliot Easton is awesome. He did a great job with CCRevisited too!
Just because of Ben Orr's tragic death, and whatever reason Rick o. has for not bieng interested in "reunion" doesn't mean a great guitarist like Elliot Easton should never be heard from again. With how tough it is for new bands (playing actual music) to break through nowadays he would be crazy to not USE the NAME and talented individuals at his "disposal" to his advantage! Todd Rundgren is a true innovator, and Does things HIS WAY.
I dont understand you guys.If its not the Cars then who the hel is Greg and Elliot??The Beatles??Obviously Greg and Eliot thought Todd could work and I think they were right. The only thing different is its not 79 any more.Oh yeah and Todd made the killer song"bang on the drum" which still makes me wanna break things, and not to mention slept with Chrissy Hynde andTodd DOES have a good voice.Replay it,your all a little bit confused!
The Cars is not The Cars without Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr. I might still want to see them if it was Ric instead of Todd...without the lead singers a group is not the same to me.
Todd Rundgren totally ruins the sound of The Cars! I know Ben Orr is gone but holy shit at least leave Rik Ocasik as the front man. He could still sing most of Ben's stuff and his own and play guitar backup. It would then still be The Cars. Todd needs to find employment elsewhere!

For me, two of the main ingredients in the Cars' identity were the lyrics of Ric Ocasek, which were so quirky and distinctive, and the musical interplay between the band members, the counterpoint hooks going on during the vocals. I liked this song, but for me, it's hard to call this the Cars.
@mgerakos I agree! Todd Rungren does not approach the timbre of RO or BO. Not having BO is one thing but NO RO = NO Cars b/c he wrote all the hits! RIP BO.
No, it's not The [original] Cars, but a good rockin' song nonetheless. But guys, really, lose the shades. I can't believe the studio floor lights are that bright. Are you trying to imitate The Blues Brothers?
@MultiRobSmith it may not be about the money....maybe its about just wanting to do what they love-make music!...I love the original cars too but this isnt bad for what its worth.
@MultiRobSmith I saw them live and while it wasn't the Cars we grew up with, it was still fun to hear the oldies done live, but now more excited that Ric,Greg,Dave and Elliott are back together.
I am not satisfied for the blending of this new vocal, i like Ben Orr and Ric Ocasek the original vocal of deep low pitch vocal that can blend through high pitch vocal.. among the rock bands..
Todd Rundgren rocks! Sorry the group didn't stay together but Todd said he had a good time playing with the guys and was able to make a few bucks and pay some bills. I do agree, the Cars without Ben Orr and Ric Ocasek are not the same, but if you are a Todd Rundgren fan and/or Prairie Prince, this is not a bad option. I did see the New Cars live in Detroit 3 years ago and it was a great show...long live rock and roll <3
Since October 03, 2000 the battery is drained, one headlight is gone and the other shorted out -- along with the tail lights; the spare is flat, the tank's running on fumes and the engine on two pistons, and you keep getting cited for making loud objectionable noises. I love you Greg and Elliot -- you're amazingly talented, but you can't turn the odometer back ... "forever Ben".
One more thing.. Im 20 years of age, yet a couple of you idiots resort to name calling. Clearly "BlueGix750" and "dacritter" are in their 40s or 50s. not that im a pussy, but only morons and boobs pick fights on the net. say what you will.. Im all ears. Yet I would have expected more sophistication from full grown adults. I BELIEVE, based on rundgrens lyrics, singing capability, guitar playing, and all around compositions, that he is beyond the cars. but then, i love the cars. revolutionary!
Read some of rundgrens lyrics.. listen to his structure. someone said it was like comparing apples to oranges. i believe its like comparing a cartoon newspaper comedy sketch to a Vango painting! l0l Rundgren being the vango and all....
Oh Bluegixx750... You sir take opinions tooooo seriously.. But, although I have never met you before, some things just become apparent off the bat. you obviously equate the cars with some past teenage hood memory that will always exist with the cars playing in the backround.
This is pretty good. Todd always rocks! This works great because it's a newer song and not one of the original Cars tunes (at least I don't think it was). It really rocks, Todd's voice is great, Elliot still kicking butt!
I have no problem with the lineup of the group, great vocals by Todd. But change your name, leave the old Cars longs alone--how did Ocasek ever give permission to turn over his songs to these guys, considering he wrote 99% of the lyrics? Get a good songwriter in there, change your name and come up with your own songs.
@mariofan4523 I worked for two major record labels, BMG and Universal. So I can tell you for a fact that this would not have gone ahead if Ric Ocasik was strongly against it. Sadly, many musicians pass away before their time. It seems that very few bands are ever as popular when an original member is out of the lineup. But fans often told us, the record labels, that they'd rather have the band back than to have no band at all. Sometimes it works. It was definitely worth the effort. Todd rocks
I saw the original Cars at MSG in 1980 and of course, it was awesome.I saw the New Cars back in 2007, I guess it was, while it was not the group we knew, it was nice to hear the old songs played again live as well as this one.
Great song! Rock 'n Roll the way it should be played. No backing tracking, no pro tools, no sampling. Real guitars, real drums, real bass and real keys.
some of you people need to get off this 'legacy' bullshit. This is Rock 'n Roll, If you want to be all serious, join a book club.
The Cars were ok, but as musicians, lyricists, vocalists... Practically all of the above, Todd Rundgren has more talent in his right finger nail than The Cars. To compare a mediocre band with a phenomenon such as Rundgren makes me laugh hysterically without choice Hands down (literally) no comparison.
@minechildmind It's like comparing the Scorpions with the Cars, apples and oranges. Check out Scorpions version of Drive, not bad, 'cause I love the Scorps lead singer, whatever his name is.
Though no formal announcement has been made with regards to the current status of The New Cars, they would appear (at minimum) to be on hiatus. Rundgren has resumed his solo career, and The New Cars have not performed any shows since September of 2007. The band's official website was maintained until early 2010, but now appears to have been shut down.

A friend of mine played bass for The New Cars while the regular bass player was doing other things. His name is Adam and he is the slappyest basest I have ever met, He played for a Very popular Bay Area Band called Psychefunkapus. They had a steady fallowing of about 2000 locals that would pack every place they played. Nothin like the "Hillbilly Happy Smash" ta really rile a party.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yup! I am the one who took the picture of him that he uses on the net. It was from the Psychafunkapus Reunion at New Georges, in San Rafael CA. I was in a band in the seventies and eighties and I feature a few of your songs in my repertoire. I enjoyed singing Just what I needed at the Whisky a Go Go in front of a packed crowed, which isn't hard at the whisky, that and we were pretty popular at the time. The action that went on in those booths was crazy and boy did we like to party back then.

Maybe we should meet and discuss this further. SInce you know Atom, maybe you live in the Bay Area. I am a pretty happy-go lucky kind of guy, who enjoys a challenge and you are putting one before me, with your attitude. Maybe we can fix that.
Kevin, no I don't know him, but I am aware that said generic bass player goes by 'atom'.
no, I don't live in the bay area. I might add that if you are prone to picking fights with strangers on the internet you should probably see to it that your personal info like your address and phone number are not so readily available. just a suggestion....
I could care less my information the I post is for the public.
As far as picking a fight, You started the bad vibes and I am willing to discuss this over coffee. If it comes down to fist-a-cuffs, That will be your venture. I do not start fights with anyone . If you feel like fighting instead of discussing the matter. I know of a few Do Jos(Karate Schools) that allow outsiders to spar on their mats. So, if your idea is to fight, I promis not to hurt you, only teach you a lesson.
Kevin, still don't care. 'discuss the matter'? challenge? what matter? Sorry to have hurt your feelings, but seems my original assessment of you as a boasting, droll twit was right on the money.
you are blowing a simple insult way out of proportion...
Whatever! You started the problem. When you start a problem with a stranger. You cannot judge the reaction your going to get. So think about it before putting your fingers on the keyboard, as to how you would like the rest of your day to go. The idea is not to be a punk, online or off. The consequences could be bad. Try to be kind to others. whether you are with them or transmitting on the net. Later
the problem is in the perception and you are the perceiver. I have no problem.
"You cannot judge the reaction your going to get....The consequences could be bad." -which is why I noted your readily available personal info...but you don't seem to care.
Dude! You don't seem to get it. Now your calling me a twit. what type of reaction do expect from that, because I know a few characters who would not take to kindly to that kind of insult but you just keep em coming, don't you? Your a fool. and now i'm pissed off. Your lucky you don't live around here.
I was a huge Cars fan in their heyday, and I also love Todd Rundgren's music. So to me, this New Cars project is fresh & exciting!
I don't understand why Ric Ocasek and David Robinson don't want to continue with this. There are millions of Cars fans around the world who would love to see their return. Sadly, Ben Orr was taken from us far too soon. We will never forget him, as his voice helped define the 1980's. I'd love ALL the Cars to re-unite with Todd in honour of the great Benjamin Orr.
@MrBeenastar They didn't want to join the group, because it's a betryal of their loyalty to their best friend and bandmate who sang lead for the hottest song, number 3 on billboard hits of all time, Drive, among other awesome Cars hits. If Ben could hear this poor imitation, he'd roll over in his grave.
No ...Ben would would hope his buddies keep playing on ..Ocasek should have said yes...... Sadly the New Cars folded ...But Easton is one awesome guitar player ...Talentwise ....Ocasek is only so so ..... basically a rhythym guitar player with an average vocal range .... That's why Ben was special .....
What was Easton supposed to do ....GIVE UP ???? No Way !!!
@MrPlaymistee4me I don't know if I'd call them his buddies, considering all the tension in the late 80's amongst the band members. I look at it as a 10-year romance, so to speak, gone bad when they broke up. Robinson was the only guy Ben kept in touch with the last 10 years of his life.
Our era is impressingly ridiculous, the retarded 20 years under of today laugh at the 80s, well they have about the same clothes, they hear boring music and think it's good, many are cheap ripoff of the 80s, etc... the list goes on and on...
Seriously, some thing are just better put to bed...and since, in my eyes, the key member of the Cars has passed on...beautiful Ben, and Ric Ocasek doesn't want to know..why bother?!? It's great that Elliot and Greg are still jammin'...but this just doesn't cut the mustard with me..Todd Rundgren doesn't have the 'edginess' of the original lineup...
LOL...Yep...sounds like the Cars...kinda.......LOVE anything Rundgren does and Elliot Easton plays some of the sweetest guitar solos I've ever heard.....love the way he starts this solo...
The music is ok, but the lyrics : ( Wish they were doing it under a different name and not doing Cars songs. To a die hard Cars fan like myself, it's hard to digest this, when I loved the original SO much and this isn't it and couldn't be it. I'd rather NOT ever hear those songs again 'live' then hear other people singing them. Easton and Hawkes are excellant musicians and I wish they could've started a different band playing just as great as they did in the Cars, but not this.
Not a damned thing wrong w/ that song. Its pretty darn hot and the cast of players is great. I to, would like a different name but if I flipped the radio on and hear that.....I would wait for the name to buy it.
Nice combo at least on this some. Elliots Eastons add so much to any group in my opinion. Should've called themselves something else. Too many Cars fans seem to get confused and want to compare them which is a huge mistake on any fans part. You end up closing your mind to new things that way. Good good song :)
I hate this! How could they do this to their legacy? They act like those 3 missing members are so replaceable. Well, they're not. These guys suck! I'm glad Ric and David didn't join in on this. How could they do this to Ben's memory? 3 major members are missing! Why could'nt they just get together and make only new music and call themselves something different? Very UN-cool. True fans won't dig it and I for one will never buy any of their crap. I'll always love Ben. Give it up guys!
This is a great tune, and in the spirit of the original band. I saw the original lineup on their last tour, when they didn't like each other anymore, the drums were all programmed, and it was a lifeless show. This is pretty cool stuff now, with a great lineup. Remember, it's not religion, it's a band.
@kingofallwhites You mean, Ric didn't have the heart to say 'yes' to this...perhaps. Yes, Elliot and Greg are the only Cars members here. I think those 2 probably just wanted to play those songs again and perhaps for money too...don't know. It's ok, but you can't compare it to the original band. It's 2 different things completely IMO.
What does IMO mean? And where is the drummer? Watching some of these old videos on here I think the Cars died with Benjamin Orr. They invited comparison by calling themselves the New Cars and Todd Rumsfeld is basically saying his Utopia band isn't as big a deal.
Bravo!I listen to the cars dailey. Now it'll be the NEW CARS!Hey Todd loved your bang on drum ringo dvd you f in Rock!Elliott just what i needed was amazing sound for radio in 1980.I bought a green sparkle gretsch in ode to you man!
it doesn't have the different lyrics that ric used to write but i think it fitsin pretty well. the sound is a progression to what they might sound like now
Well Thunderwimpstudios2, reuniting The Cars would be like trying to reunite The Beatles, Led Zeppelin or The Who. See, 2 of the members have passed away, making that an impossible task. As much as I would love to see it myself, it can't happen.
ive been a fan since 1978 i think this line up should of just had a different name all together theres no rick or ben heck itd be nice if rick was even on the line up. cant "the cars" just get back together?
This was a flawed concept that really circled the bowl when Elliot broke his shoulder and they had to get off the road in mid-2006. Contender for the least lucrative sell-out in rock history.
Hey, I've LOVED Todd since Nazz....and Prairie Prince's body of work with the Tubes is beyond reproach....Kasim and Elliot are stars in their own right....BUT THIS AIN'T THE CARS (new or old)).
Bogus, bogus bogus. Though the line up is great, no doubt.
It's like if Paul and Ringo toured with Dhani and Julian and called it 'The New Beatles".
If Ric wasn't gunna do it, they should have just done something different. when they do songs by the cars, todd seems like trash compared to Ben and Ric
Great band, catchy tune. I agree it's not the originals-Ric Ocasek and drummer David Robinson chose not to participate and sadly, Benjamin Orr died of pancreatic cancer in Oct. 2000. I suppose that Todd Rundgren, Prairie Prince and Kasim Sulton are great players (with great names) and thus are suitable replacements, but I miss "the Cars"
He said that it wasn't the same without Ben... The Cars are one of my all time favs. Everyone in that band had such a unique sound and when you put them all together.... awesome! Not a bad song, but just doesn't have the personality of the original. It think it would be impossible to recreate that sound. RIP Ben..
If I have it backwards, then why does the CD contain 12 songs from the Cars and only 2 from Todd Rundgren? Also, why are they called "The New Cars" and not "Utopia Revisited"?
No disrespect intended here, but on some level it's about the money. Having said that, Todd Rundgren needs the Cars and their music more than the Cars (Elliot Easton & Greg Hawkes) need him. They're getting by on the strength of Cars songs. Buy the CD or go see them live-people react with more enthusiasm when they hear a hit from the Cars.
I liked this song when it came out and bought it on iTunes to support them. Unfortunately, when they started touring to support the two new songs as a test, their bus got in an accident and Elliot Easton broke his arm - that canceled the tour which was off to a good start. This song almost made the top 40 but they were not able to support it. They seem to have never recovered as their website was last updated in 2007 so it appears they may have given up, although the site is still there. Too bad
If they want to tour around as the NEW CARS-WTF_ let them....it's just not as exciting as Ben Orr on lead vox...not to mention the bands founder Ric O...
Hopefully everyone knows by now the real Cars are back with Ric and David.

This is pretty good. Todd always rocks! This works great because it's a newer song and not one of the original Cars tunes (at least I don't think it was). It really rocks, Todd's voice is great, Elliot still kicking butt!
lakefloor 1 year ago
I have no problem with the lineup of the group, great vocals by Todd. But change your name, leave the old Cars longs alone--how did Ocasek ever give permission to turn over his songs to these guys, considering he wrote 99% of the lyrics? Get a good songwriter in there, change your name and come up with your own songs.
mariofan4523 1 year ago
@mariofan4523 I worked for two major record labels, BMG and Universal. So I can tell you for a fact that this would not have gone ahead if Ric Ocasik was strongly against it. Sadly, many musicians pass away before their time. It seems that very few bands are ever as popular when an original member is out of the lineup. But fans often told us, the record labels, that they'd rather have the band back than to have no band at all. Sometimes it works. It was definitely worth the effort. Todd rocks

As far as picking a fight, You started the bad vibes and I am willing to discuss this over coffee. If it comes down to fist-a-cuffs, That will be your venture. I do not start fights with anyone . Try to be kind to others. whether you are with them or transmitting on the net. Later

MrBeenastar 2 years ago 3
@MrBeenastar They didn't want to join the group, because it's a betryal of their loyalty to their best friend and bandmate who sang lead for the hottest song, number 3 on billboard hits of all time, Drive, among other awesome Cars hits. If Ben could hear this poor imitation, he'd roll over in his grave.
mariofan4523 1 year ago
@mariofan4523
No Way !!!
MrPlaymistee4me 1 year ago
@MrPlaymistee4me I don't know if I'd call them his buddies, considering all the tension in the late 80's amongst the band members. I look at it as a 10-year romance, so to speak, gone bad when they broke up. Robinson was the only guy Ben kept in touch with the last 10 years of his life.

Rick Ocasek was a better lyricist.

Easton and Hawkes are excellant musicians and I wish they could've started a different band playing just as great as they did in the Cars, but not this.
ladybluluv 2 years ago
Not a damned thing wrong w/ that song. Its pretty darn hot and the cast of players is great. I to, would like a different name but if I flipped the radio on and hear that.....I would wait for the name to buy it.
millerrob99 2 years ago
Nice combo at least on this some. Elliots Eastons add so much to any group in my opinion. Should've called themselves something else. Too many Cars fans seem to get confused and want to compare them which is a huge mistake on any fans part. You end up closing your mind to new things that way. Good good song :)

kingofallwhites 2 years ago
I hate this! How could they do this to their legacy? They act like those 3 missing members are so replaceable. Well, they're not. These guys suck! I'm glad Ric and David didn't join in on this. How could they do this to Ben's memory? 3 major members are missing! Why could'nt they just get together and make only new music and call themselves something different? Very UN-cool. True fans won't dig it and I for one will never buy any of their crap. I'll always love Ben. Give it up guys!

bobos01 2 years ago
This is a great tune, and in the spirit of the original band. I saw the original lineup on their last tour, when they didn't like each other anymore, the drums were all programmed, and it was a lifeless show. This is pretty cool stuff now, with a great lineup. Remember, it's not religion, it's a band.
guitaristador 2 years ago
My guess is Ellott and Greg ran out of money and Ric didn't have the heart to say no to this.
kingofallwhites 2 years ago
@kingofallwhites You mean, Ric didn't have the heart to say 'yes' to this...perhaps. Yes, Elliot and Greg are the only Cars members here. I think those 2 probably just wanted to play those songs again and perhaps for money too...don't know. It's ok, but you can't compare it to the original band. It's 2 different things completely IMO.
ladybluluv 2 years ago
What does IMO mean? And where is the drummer? Watching some of these old videos on here I think the Cars died with Benjamin Orr. They invited comparison by calling themselves the New Cars and Todd Rumsfeld is basically saying his Utopia band isn't as big a deal.

Also, why are they called "The New Cars" and not "Utopia Revisited"?
acpk19 2 years ago
XD the two members of the cars asked todd to be in the new cars not the Utopia Revisited xD thats why
baz1617 2 years ago

Too bad
