  • Dr. Lovett is the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Tennessee State University. In this video Dr. Lovett talks about slavery and its existence 100 years before Jamestown was founded by the English. He says that over 13,000 slave ship records are kept by TSU and that the slave industry during this time was a $17 billion dollar industry.

Most of them were common workers fro Christopher Columbus when he set sail in 1419. Alot of knowledge about navigating he learned from the Africans. A 100 years later in 1619, first 20 Africans arrived in Jamestown were they were sold to english settlers, about 15million Africans were removed from West Africa.

  • As the Industrial Revolution came closer and closer the people began to think more about the relationship between man and man. 1776 the Quaker people were the first to disagree completely with slavery. Once the Constitution was written in 1787 slavery and the Industrial Revolution were at prime heights. The North wanted to get rid of slavery as the South wanted to keep it.   • When one considers how huge $17 billion is today, it becomes almost unfathomable that the slave trade industry could generate that much revenue in early colonial times.
