Sometimes the video goes into melodrama, but for an overall history of Mozart's life and music, it is very well done. If it causes someone to look deeper to fact-check minor issues, then it has succeeded marvelously. I use this video in my music appreciation classes which I teach at a community college.
@LeGrande, I'm happy to see someone using this for education. Check out the Beethoven documentary I put up made by the same people who made the Mozart one.
@LVB1770 I saw the Schubert documentary by the same people, but not the Beethoven until just now. How many composers' documentaries did these two do? I could listen to Balint's voice all day talking about the composers.
One thing I appreciate about this documentary is that it puts large chunks of the music into the context of Mozart's life. That is unusual as is the conversational tone of the narration.
@LVB1770 THE THREE PART DOCUMENTARY FILM WAS FULL OF FACTS & IT WAS ALSO FULL OF SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES WHICH DISTORTED ACCURACY. YOU NEED NOT RELY ON ME...SIR, TO EDUCATE YOU ON THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS COMPOSER.
Sussmayer wasn't his pupil. But he wasn't talented as Mozart, he couldn't write something as complicated as the fugal Kyrie, had to incorporate Mozart's material into last movement.

This documentary is a piece of junk. This looks to be an amateurish attempt by the Vazsonyi brothers (never heard of them before) to make a buck and/or a name for themselves. Who the heck is Anthony Quayle anyway?
I think the basic concept is interesting and well worked out: two men talking about the brilliant composer, one (Quayle) is the unlearned, asking Mozart fan, the other (Vazsonyi) the man with the knowledge about the music and the facts. Its something different then a voice over telling everything from a piece of paper. The documentary tries to portray Mozart in a very human way. I'm sure this was made because of an inner compulsion and passion to tell us about Mozart.
Don´t know when this was made, but errors abound. He wasn´t buried in a paupers grave - but in a grave like most Wienese were buried in.Constance was there, she was also there when he died. The recently completed Magic Flute was a big success even in his lifetime, and the speculations that he was poisoned lack absolutely all confirmation.Shortly before his death he was optimistic, but fell ill, probably with rheumatic fever.& his father was a control freak.Mozart blossomed after his death etc etc
I don't like this documentary. It never talked about how Mozart was in feud with the aristocrats, after Mozart criticized how the aristocrats were treating the poor in the play "marriage of figaro" I dislike how the documentary simplify his life like a cheap, sad chick flick.

2ListenAndSing, So please fill us all in on your sources for accuracy on the life of Mozart!
I have found over the many of studying Mozart's life that his letters are the best resources for accuracy.

Sir Anthony Quayle CBE was a very accomplished and respected British actor and theatre director. Sadly, he passed away several years ago.

Magic Flute. It's a duet from the two armored men at the beginning of scene 10.

Somewhat estranged from her brother - not the least thanks due to his marriage - she died in Salzburg in 1829.

True. The Greatest Documentary on Mozart: "We live, eat, fuck, kill and die." Yet he was so fragile a giant
