  • Shine on me with your light

Without you Iím a cold dark stone

Shine on me I have no light of my own

You are the sun, you are the sun, you are the sun

    And I am the moon........

  • I really like the beauty of this song but I notice that Jesus Christ is never mentioned and the entirety of the lyrics seem to be subtlety twisted towards pagan sun worship.

  • Lovely song of Sarah many times i cried

  • ISTM that this should be taken to refer to God. Jesus should be recognized as a moon - reflecting God.

  • This isn't Lionel Richie!

  • Love It!

  • i love you Jesus... You are like a candle in a dark hallway ... you guide me through everything...

  • Actually it's not an analogy ... it's called a literary metaphor - when you draw a comparison between objects that are seemingly unrelated and without using the term "like/as" She says, "You are the sun. I am the moon." Vs. "You are like the Sun." Those have different connotations. It's not rocket science. Get it? The theology behind the song is actually accurate if you understand it correctly.

  • Man made cars and one would argue that man even though made cars, cannot run faster than a car so what about God that made the sun, can he shine brighter then? Well look at it this way, all man makes, he makes from something but God created everything out of nothing... and created man from the dust. Now that is mind bugling. God has no comparison that exists and eventually everyone will agree so why not do it today...

  • @itsd4real Cuz theres no proof god exists.. so why believe in "it". Lol..

  • @JoMomma239

Open your eyes. You look, but you don't see.

You're looking for a god according to your definition.

Let Him define Himself to you.

"Be still and know that I am God." Psalm 46:10

I've been where you are. I look and now I see. I was blind but now I see.

    Much love,

  • @dgc1347 Aight bro, if you say so.

  • @JoMomma239 Uhm... there actually is proof... the Bible is proof.. Love is proof.. I used to not believe.. then i thought i should have a little faith... and so here i am. blossoming into the beautiful woman of God that He made me to be. Faith is moving without knowing for sure. it's almost like the sister to Trust.. Fall into His arms and He will surely catch you and never let go..

  • @Godbroughtmehere All the chaos in the world? all the bs? people dieng for no reason?... Gods definatley watching and having fun, huh?

  • @JoMomma239

Yeah he is watching men try to it without him and destroy themselves.

  • LOVE this song. thanks for posting it :)

  • Interesting to see this song is being taken literally by some. If that were the case Sara would literally be a moon or a cold, dark stone without the sun. Or for that matter, Jesus would literally be a piece of bread or literally be a lamb. Literally. Oh well, people will believe what they believe. Beautiful song. May God shine light, (literally), on what is truly being said. :)

  • @phoenix800

This has a little different meaning to me after realizing WHO, WHO the sun stands for.

After studying Aten=atom and Helios=Helium, i just see it different, thanks

  • I meant, most songwriters use symbols!

    They are not carved images!

  • Sara used the Sun as a symbol for God. Most songwriters do. A symbol is not the Reality for which it stands. You are being silly.

  • @eameece

Thats a big difference, carved images versus symbols.

I am your brother in Christ.

Don't look at this as a debate of me versus you. I ask you that if you love God, research solar worship and understand that there were 2 types, folks who worshipped that ball of fire and those who worshipped who it stood for. Both were wrong.

Study Aten, Helios. Our God is spirit and we should worship in spirit and truth and NOT regress into using symbols.

  • @jwbflyer actually Sara is using an analogy. Jesus also used analogies, so how could it be wrong?

  • @unicornluverz2

OK, so there we are, a very long time ago right........

Moshe comes down the mountain, right........

He says, "Hey guys, God told me not to have any image before him, not anything carved or like anything in the heavens above (wink wink, stomp stomp)"

and then we say to Moshe.......

"No man, I'll take the SUN as symbolic, image, analogy, whatever, but I'll use the SUN"

    WOW

Do what you want but that doesn't make it legit.

    PEACE

  • @jwbflyer I know what your saying, that we aren't supposed to put anything above God (the sun, money, friends...) but I can honestly say I don't think of worshipping the sun when I hear this song. I think of my beautiful savior. God made the sun for me to enjoy, but not to worship. Revelation 22:5-And there will no longer be any night; and they will not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God will illumine them; and they will reign forever and ever.

  • @unicornluverz2

    thanks.

Look at it this way, you are invisible, you are spirit, you are always trying to get people to know you as such spirit (love, truth, etc) and in order to get people to understand this concept, you made laws to help them, and then sent your SON to proclaim you (invisible spirit of LOVE TRUTH; the LIGHT) and then after 2,000 years, you see the title of this song. It is offensive to my Father and to his SON, and to me. The title is aweful!

  • Comment removed

  • @jwbflyer the title isn't saying the sun is GOD, it is saying GOD is LIKE the sun. GOD is better, GOD shows His beauty THROUGH the sun and His creation but that does not make GOD the creation. that would be stupid, the sun can't make anything, it is a natural thing (a ball of gas for crying out loud). Something better than natural, supernatural (God) has to have made the natural (the sun) or nothing would make sense.

  • Sara uses the Sun as a symbol. A symbol is not the reality for which it stands. Sara is not saying the Sun is God. There are lots of words in the Bible too. They are symbols, not carved images.

  • The Sun can be interpreted as God, not just Jesus.

Something Changed is her best song; this may be 2nd...

  • @eameece

You would be wise to study solar worship through out the ages.

You have the right to call your God whatever you want. The Sun, Helios, Aten, whatever.

But make no mistake, the God of Israel has never been seen and there is NOTHING like him in all of creation.

    Exodus 20:4-6

Hard to deny, but this song does.

So, go on and continue to say your God can be interpreted as the Sun, it is your right to do so.

Truth is from God. We should also worship IN TRUTH.

  • @eameece

"You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above,..................."

    Peace, love, and truth.

  • Complete Paganism and idolatry.

There is NOTHING like my God in all of creation.

    God has NEVER been seen.

This is why he COMMANDED NO IMAGES BEFORE HIM!!!!!!

    There is nothing like him.

Who is the Sun? sons, sons who recieved glory unto themselves. Study Helios, Aten, Akhenaten.

  • @jwbflyer God has been seen, actually, in Jesus and in nature and the faces of people. He's been more seen than anyone, ever.

  • @carolann1293

So then I should skip that scripture?

Did heaven and Earth flee from his presence?

Paganism supports seeing God in nature.

We can see the creation and know there is a creator, in that I think we can agree. But you cannot see him in creation. That is pure born Paganism.

Part of worship is to uphold, support, and defend the truth.

Calling God the Sun is pretty far from truth. Its Pagan and against his law to have no image before him.

  • Beautiful song!! :) thanks much `:)

  • i love the imagery of these lyrics...

  • Yes, light of the world is Jesus, symbolically represented by the sun, and the moon represents Mary and also every christian and the church in that we are to be a mirror that reflects the light of Christ. See 1 Corinthians 1-13. Every christian is to say YES to God and be a perfect receiver, like Mary did, and to be full of grace like Mary. In this poetic parable way of describing it. In revelations the woman of God is clothed in the sun. She crushes the serpents head.

  • Jesus is Brother Sun, Mary is Sister Moon. The moon receives its glory as a mirror. It has no glory except that it receives the reflection of the sun. It perfectly reflects it so that it gives us light in the darkness. That is the meaning of Mary. It is the meaning of the Church. ~ Richard Rohr O.F.M. (To those who think this is sun worship, learn what poetry and parable means....it's allegory...just like when Jesus said he was BREAD.)

  • Mary is a just a person. She's not the moon, not in the song.

  • Peter 7:11 "He that worships the sun is considered a pagan, since whosoever worships a false deity shall then bear hellfire on the day of judgement"

From the Annals of Maximus Retardicus, it goes, " Who among ye vests their livelihood in worshipping such a fair seeming yet inanimate oject? For the sun does not care whether ye live or die, but shines on your birth as it shines on ye grave"

  • Good insight ^-^ On the other hand, I also agree that the composers' imagery skills are more at work in the song, with emphasis placed on the relationship between the composer and God Ü The moon and sun imagery are just vehicles for emphasizing the composer's dependence on Christ =)

  • are like metaphor blind or something?

  • @Symphonia16 Yes I am, and it happens to be a serious brain malfunction. I would appreciate some decency from you for that, gosh!!

  • "I am the moon with no light of my own.... I can't be a light until I turn my face to you"

  • I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. John 12:46

  • The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. Psalm 19:1

The sun is the light source for our planet in the day, in it's absence is the night. But the night is not without the light of the sun, the moon remains a beautiful beacon in the night, not a source of light unto itself, but a reflection of the true light. When we look at the moon closely we see it is blemished, full of damage, but the sun illuminates it nonetheless, a beacon in the cold, dark night.

  • I like the analogy of this song : we reflect God's goodness - like the moon reflects the sun - as we live our lives as Christians and witness to others. It's a nice metaphor. Lovely song :-) It should encourage us that we need to "reflect" God in everything we do so that people can see his love and forgiveness and see that the Holy Spirit lives in us.

  • Jesus is the Light of the world and He is the Son of God! This is beautiful Christian song, sung by a very graced artist who loves her Savior very much...

  • Beautiful song! Love it!

    Kimberly :)

  • Sorry, but it is a Christian song. Sara Groves is an established gospel singer. The song is speaking to Christ as the metaphorical sun we must look to for light.

  • exactly we are all dark cold stones, until the "sun" shines on us, then we become the "moonlight"

  • in the story of Moses when he left the presence of God his face was radiant. so much so that he had to wear a veal on his face. Jesus also called us th e light of the world. The only way we can shine is if He lights us. this song is very Christian.

  • Or do you think she is singing to the sun and thinks that she is the actually the moon.

  • It is a christian song. Light of the world= Jesus

  • i like the photos you got, it really goes with this song. and i love this song. she has a beautiful voice. love the words.

  • i listen to this like three times a day!!! great metaphors, too... totally makes sense! love this song!!

  • Beautiful voice and song. No doubt about it.

  • listening to this over and over! I love it. reminds me to shine everyday.

  • I love this song i will play this to my wedding bless the LOrd

  • Beautiful song, even more beautiful voice!

Forget the debate about the sanctity of

contemporary Christian music. It is a very

powerful tool for reaching the lost. I'm sure

God approves, I'm sure He smiles too.:)

  • great point

  • how can she sing this song without bawling every time?!? i know i cant!

  • Awesome song! This is definitely one of my favorites out of all her amazing music. Sara Groves has great insight and as always an incredible message in all of her music. Something very rare in today's age! Thanks for posting this vid, I listen to this song a lot.

  • Isn't the sun the sun?

  • Revelation 22:4-5 "And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. And there will be no night there--no need for lamps or sun-- for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever." There are many more verses stating Jesus is the Light of the World. Where there is light there can be no darkness....etc.

  • This song is a metaphor.

  • Constantine, who founded the Catholic Church was a sun worshiper. He had his famed vision of a cross superimposed on his God, the sun, and the words "By this sign, conquer." And conquer he did.

Paul seemed be saying that God lives inside of the sun:

1Ti 6:16 Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

  • The sun is not God however. We need to shine for God. The only way to do that is if we turn our face to Him. That is the message of the song.

  • this song is BANGIN' Glory to God!!!
