  • By far and away my favorite cover of all the DnD books!

  • 1st Ed. AD&D was the BEST edition ever, even tho this Player's Handbook is actually 6 yrs. younger than me. Of course, when "Unearthed Arcana" came out, it made 1st Ed. even better, esp. since it introduced the "weapon specializations" rule to RPG.

  • @fungwan2006 I'll have to give Unearthed Arcana a read over. I really did like reading through 1st Ed. It was inspiring.

  • @WhyMeMoFo Yeah LL is Basic/Expert with some options from AD&D but bolted onto the basic LL game. For me that's my sweet spot. That being said, I rather like 2nd Edition with all of the optional rules turned off as well. Good luck with your campaign. Does everyone have their own PHB?

  • @WhyMeMoFo I've had 3 friends donate their Dragon Magazine collections to me. Most of the collections were in the same range of issues, so I picked out the best ones to keep. I'm missing the early and later editions but I have a TON of the middle issues. Have you considered running OSRIC or perhaps Labyrinth Lord with the Advanced Edition Companion (AEC)? If you have the original books, you probably don't need the retro-clones, but I like how they clean up some of the rules & organize them.

  • @WhyMeMoFo I normally run game with mainly the core books, but there are some cool things in some of the additions.

  • Can someone explain to me how hit dice works? e.g. It says that (ad&d 1e PHB p.19 6th printing) a cleric has a d8 as a hit die. Does that mean at 1st level that I roll a d8 and use the result as the cleric's 1st level hp?

  • @china123lol Yeah, the Hit Die for each Class is what dice they roll at each level to see how many additional hit points they get for that level. At level one you roll an 8-sided die and at each new level as well. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

  • @Samwise7RPG For a second level cleric, the PHB states that I get 2d8 hit dice. Does that mean that I get 2d8 Hit Points in total or 2d8 Hit Point increase from level 1.

  • @china123lol 2D8 is the total. So for every level you will roll 1D8. If you notice at higher levels this changes though. At level 10 you only get +2 Hit Points, and at level 11 you only get +2 Hit Points. What you see in the table is the total. So a 11th level Cleric would have a TOTAL of 9D8 + 4 Hit Points. Note that if you have a high Constitution Stat that you may get bonus Hit Points per level. With a 15 Con you get +1 HP per level, 16---> is a +2 max for non fighters.

  • @Samwise7RPG Thanks mate, you've been a great help. I've only played 4th edition previously and nothing of this complexity appears.

  • @china123lol Good luck with the game, let me know how it turns out.

  • I actually find modern rule books much harder to read than the ye olde 1st ed stuff. Take a look at how much color, overlays and destracting artwork there is in modern rulebooks (Dark Heresy rpg for example) The old Gygax AD&D books are layed out more like a school text book which I like.

  • @anvilofcrom the only real problem I have the with old books is the organization is pretty nonsensical a lot of the time, and I don't really like the splitting of the 1st level character creation rules between the PHB and the DMG, lines like "your dm will tell you how this works" are annoying when you're trying to learn the system and get sent bouncing from book to book and chapter to chapter

  • @sonoNEKO That's what is nice about the retro-clones of these old games is that they are better organized. I do like having a player's handbook though without all the stuff that the DMG has to some degree.

  • @Samwise7RPG Yeah, I think if I ever do end up running AD&D, I'll probably read through the old core books, and then turn around and run OSRIC for that reason, or if I ever want to go as far back as 1974 D&D, I'll definitely be running Delving Deeper (got my box on pre-order). I do hear that the Basic/Expert books didn't suffer from these organizational flaws nearly as much though...I wonder...

  • @sonoNEKO You can also use Advanced Edition Companion from Labyrinth Lord if you like the options but not all of the crunch. It basically just tacks on 1st Edition options on to the LL game which is essentially Basic and Expert D&D. I don't have any experience with Delving Deeper.

  • @philzilla2k Thanks for watching.

  • back in those days u rolled ur stats first, 3d6 for each stat. In order

  • @bleachman27 I'm going to use that method for my Labyrinth Lord game I'm going to start running in Oct. :)

  • @Samwise7RPG nice dude can i skype in on that?

  • @bleachman27 The place I game at isn't the best for a laptop (no nearby plugs at all). If I ever do a LL Skype game though, I'll be sure to send you an invite. I've never done a Skype game, or really used it at all... It is something I mean to do one day though.

  • @Samwise7RPG o its pretty simple and message me whenever if u need an extra guy i am thinkin bout skyping or tinychating so players in for my upcoming 4e campaign and yes, they will roll 4d6 for stats - but still in order mwahahahahahaahaha

  • I'm really glad you mentioned Labyrinth Lord in this video. Props for that!

  • @Inklings I did a two part review of LL as well. You can find them in my growing list of videos. :)

  • Thousands and thousands of games have been played with this edition and I know some people that still use it. Good review. Some of the old school types just like to stick with what they know :P.

  • @refuckulate420 I'm coming back around to the old school games (an old school convert you might say). Thanks for watching.

  • First, great review. I'd like to ask you to do reviews of the 1st DM & MM books too. I hope you didn't pay too much for these at the con, they sell for mad cheap on ebay. The quotes you selected were excellent, I always think it is important to remind players that they are responsible for making sure the DM has a good time, & that the better they do & more fun they let the DM have, the better the game will end up being. Great review!

  • @woodwwad Thanks. I think I got them for like $6 or so each. Doing the DMG and the MM for 1st Edition sounds like a plan. Your wish is my command. :) The quotes I selected really spoke to me.

  • @Samwise7RPG cool man, looking forward to them. I agree, excellent quotes.

  • Once again well done tim....Never used psionics always thought it was broken...Great review...

  • @TheOutsiders68 I always felt that way too (and I've also heard that from various people). I'll have to read them more closely to see what they actually do.

  • I've got the 1st printing. I bought it new.

The bard was the first prestige class.

I never like the 1E psionics rules. I prefer the 3.5/OGL version.

  • @tetsubo57 I guess I'm just used to Psionics being in a splat book, and that is why it felt weird to have it in the PHB.

  • @Samwise7RPG Remember, this is before the era of the 'splat book'.

  • @tetsubo57 You make a great point, in that splat books was a later phenomenon. :)

  • That first piece of artwork is called "A Paladin in Hell", and they later made an entire adventure inspired by that picture.

  • @atari67 I can see why. It's a great picture.
