  • Chris broderick should take this advice. Practicing ascending and descending scales in a song is not music. It's boring.

  • @plarblesklintobleits That thought process is irrelevant, close minded and just plain stupid. Good music is timeless. Shit music is contemporary. For example, Mozart and friends will be remembered for a very long time. Long after you, I, and most of this generation is long gone and turned to dust.

  • "figure out how to play with ppl who are better than you are"

I would but you never come to miami. :'(

  • the first thing i learned was every note on the guitar. if you know vocal music or piano keys...it takes 30 seconds. start with E. this is great advice for constructive learning and creating.

  • yeah, i didn't undertand it too.. Someone could explain to me, what did Satch mean when he told "know the name of every note on the guitar"? Thanks a lot.

  • i dont need to know every note on guitar i just need to know what key im playing in and the rest is easy because u should know when u play with a band whether u are in the wrong key when your doing a solo because u will hear the difference

  • see if i was to practice scales and arrpegios and theory etc ,and eventually know all the knowledge, what percentage of practice time should i use to do so like 40% 50% 60% etc?

  • This isn't advice for guitar, this is advice for life. A lot of people are scared to go outside the box and take on what they don't know, and stick to doing what they do know. It's easier, it keeps their ego in check, and it feels good. The people who go furthest are the ones who are able to leave their pride at the door and be honest with themselves about what they lack. Only then can you understand how to really improve...

  • Hey Satch, Im sitting here with your grandma, and she wants her hat back!

  • Joe, you need to be completely honest about that hat...

  • Thums up if you don't know every note on a guitar.

  • @TheBlues088 I don't use all of them !! e.g very high notes on low strings .!!

  • why learn ALL the scales..? some of the best 70's rock is played with the blues scale....

  • @pmay222 although you are right, knowing all of them makes you a more versatile guitarist and helps to expand your creativity when playing and writing. it benefits a lot to understand all, if not most of, the modes and scale patterns. i just finished learning all of the modes, and it really does help your writing, especially in hardcore band

  • @pmay222 lol. you're so stupid. 70's rock guitarists were trapped in a blues scale box. he meant that if you wanna be a real musician like him, you wanna learn the more scales as possible. he didn't mean like you have to learn every scale. that is not possible. there are millions of scales out there, you know. god, people are so close-minded these days.

  • He made that hat himself lol

  • My old guitar teacher was taught by Malmsteen and Malmsteen gave him one of his guitars which i played. All of the frets are concave, apparently Malmsteen sanded the frets down one by one. But he acts so arrogant it makes him look and sound like a complete prick. His head is too far up his own ass, which is why i don't like him.

  • Joe always looks so tired. its all the ideas running through his head he can't sleep lol

  • @SuperGuitarZone i think it's cuz he's 55 years old

  • Well said.. JOE is the da MAN.

  • The fuck is up with all the Malmsteen haters here? I love Satriani, thats why i'm here. And not to take anything away from him but he could never hold a candle to Malmsteen.

  • @BruinsBrawler Malmsteen just acts like such a jerk

  • i would actually pay to see Satch practice :D

thumbs up if you agree ^^

  • is it possible to know every chord and scale

  • I bet that Joe would sold out good number of shows doing only practicing he he.....

  • Well, *I* would buy a ticket to watch Satch practicing.

  • This is to all instant gratification noobs...Joe is stating the obvious...what you dont know? go learn it...lol.Its so simple but everyone these days is looking for the quick fix. They have so many sources available to them and yet still looking for that little 5 minute video that explains everything and makes them guitar masters.Sit your ass down and practise.

  • hm that's funny i always thought society wanted musicians to make pancakes for them.

  • @flamengo4ever or burgers ?

  • i have everyday stared at my guitar and wondered if i should "learn the name of every note on my guitar." and God himself has now answered my question. thank you Joe

  • Spot on advice. Learn it properly and then get out there and do it.ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssazzxssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss That was my cat - sorry! I love Yngwie too - what a character. Thats what we need.

  • omfg he is voldemort!!! , with a hat!!!! :D

  • WATCH OUT HARRY ITS LORD VOLDEMORT!!!!

  • a lot of youtube muscians NEED to learn this...all you guys like quayle or some of you other people need to learn 1000000 notes per minute is not special...sure it might be impressive...but mozard would laugh you out of the building...SLOW DOWN and write music...and to do it right it takes a LONG TIME...and YES im talking to you british people...slow it down!

  • Thumbs up if you would pay to watch Satch practice guitar

  • @goodygoody23 thumbs down for comments

  • @jenetik0 Hahaha thumbs down for this douchebag that has to change his tampon every time he sees a thumbs up comment, get over yourself you momma's boy dickhead.

  • Smart words. THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is good advice right there :P

  • Great tips from the best guitar player alive. Thanks Joe!

  • He's a teacher? he looks younger than vai,and kirk.

  • @Jamsessionroom1337 He's 55, but he does look very young. Probably because he never really got into drug use.

  • He is a very wise man! thats why he be a good teacher to Kirk, Vai to name a few

  • thanks just got yelled at big time by the teacher ....

what u trying to do? destroy us??

  • @LinZeeLinuz what?

  • @pettah93 get the joke?

  • Man...kirk hammett, and all of joes students should consider themselves extremely lucky to have had joe satriani as their teacher.

  • his last sentence on this video is the root of everything..his fantastic...his words are very sharp it wounds me so deep...inspirational man to me...joe rocks...

  • Great advice from a legend. Thanks Joe!

  • Simply Satch-tastic!

  • i love joe to death but is that a condom on his head?

  • i am honored to say that i have met joe and that i have a signed guitar :D the guitar is a peice of shit but its my first one so its special to me and so is joe's music

  • Probably the best single guitar advice I've heard summed up in a nutshell.

  • @ThemBones24, Agreed. Straight to the point. He easily clarified all of my musical shortcomings that I didn't say out loud. Even to myself.

  • I played for 20 years but I still often have to think twice of wich is the D or G string .

  • Why does he look like a turtle!?

  • @perseusbeatkraken lol..but he's great!

  • @deathscythekim729 yea he is but still and I'm not the only one that thinks so I saw someone said he look d like a turtle dying of cancer lol

  • Ugly frog !!!

  • @KakviBRE lol maybe he was the alien we were surfing with

  • obvious troll is trolling

  • the best advice is satriani is shit!!!!!!!!!!

  • @codehendrix you are obviously better

  • What happened?

  • man he hit it right there..i was never one to just sit and do scales..i just cant do that..i practice and learned by playing along the best i can to music i love, next thing you know your writing stuff..quit simple really, but there is a element of discipline you have to follow..

  • 2.25 till the end - such a true distillation of reality. Greatness right there!

  • This is really excellent stuff.

  • words of wisdom right there.

  • One of the best interview and interviewers ever. Most music interviewers try to act cool for some reason, this guy just lets him talk and doesn't even show his face.

  • His main message - practice your technique, but don't become boring to the point where you don't ever play for fun or entertainment/creative purposes - is all any player needs to know to help them develop their ability and love for the instrument! Thanks, Joe!

  • better than malmsteen speech

  • @12luiguti Everything's better than malmsteen speech.

  • @12luiguti fuck you!

  • @Computerprohelper I know man, there's no need for harry potter references in a Satch video! Grow up kids! Right?

  • @futureblade7 yeah man!!!

  • @futureblade7 guys, Yngwie doesn't have a big Ego, he is just that tough couch that everyone hates, but when you come back after winning the Championship trophy, you all will thank him

and big Eho has always been part of rock and roll, look at what Iron Maiden, Slash, AcDc, Ozzy, Van Halen, did, when you are up at stage, its ok to have a big ego

as Kiss said, who wants to see a guy on stage sitting on a chair playing like a fool

  • @12luiguti if you really wanna see an inspiring speech, watch this

    /watch?v=atGBKuCJ-Jc

  • @12luiguti ikr hes so up his owm arse

  • @MrB0lti3 wut?

  • @12luiguti malmsteen. is a complete dick

  • @MrB0lti3 AGREE

  • @12luiguti Malmsteen: uuh so yeah play like this: doodlie doodlie poodlie doodlie widdlie diddley doo.

    and you should be fine!

  • @12luiguti malmsteen is an asshole.

  • This is all SO TRUE!

  • 1:10

That's the only wrong thing you've said, you insanely good player and insanely smart human being!

  • He's 54 amazing... he looks a lot younger!! with a terrible disease but younger.

  • @rebaaecu

yeah, you can only see it in his eyes.. with his sunglasses he looks like 30 :D

  • joe is awesome. =D

  • 5 ppl play music for their dogs..

  • He looks like a turtle.

  • @Lukeypoo91 Yup, a Wise Turtle

  • Mighty Turtle Head

  • @Lukeypoo91 LoL! I've allways thought that. You gotta luv him though.

  • He talks like a doctor : p

  • @JediKeSula Exactly like mine in fact, haha

  • Good point. Excellent advice.

  • he's 110% correct.

  • Hes really right. There are some impossible, impossible guitarists out there. But still I hear a satriani song, and it just hits you and just sounds right.

  • @mememememe1980s exactly. too many guitarists now, particularly in metal, treat technique as an end in itself. this is pointless. music isn't a sport. the minute i stopped shredding and doing all this 'impressive' stuff i learned how to play properly. learned to improvise. I have maybe 1/5 of the technical skill i had 10 years, but i feel i'm a better 'player' now, rather than just a technician.

  • awesome advice

  • A good part of Joe's career is his philosophy, his intelligence and personality, that's why he's so good. I agree with you F3FisGoodforYou, he's whole, balanced, he has the meaning to back up his music with, really an incredible person. Long live Joe!

  • joe is a down to earth guy no dought about it but hes also has to understand that we will never be as good as him

  • Now I know what to do! Thanks Satch!!! :D

  • Joe just made me practice for 8 hours straight...

    :(...

I still don't know all the notes, or all the chords...dude there are so many...sub chords, different ways of making the chords...different ways of fingering them

And the notes aren't really that important to learn...if you tune to C you lose 10 notes & gain10, if you tune higher like to G you gain 5.notes lose 5

What joe is saying is correct..learn what you don't know, but only learn things you actually WANT to learn is more important.

  • Hahahaha, did he fart at 2:20?!

  • i think he is a fish

  • @sixstringsFTW I think he is a turtle

  • Sacred Words.

  • Very helpful! I've got holiday at the moment, so I've got much time for everything Satriani mentioned.

  • Satch's the man

  • I love that observation, learn, practice, play or if you like, mind, body, soul

    Thank you Joe!!!

  • TRUE Shredfix1993

The only Guitarist i have seen who truly speaks about what a Guitarist really is...!

he is not amongst those who want to prove themselves by playing speedy licks or legatos or showcasing any of the guitar techniques... he just focuses on MAKING MUSIC with these techniques as just the tools to supplement his playing...

    LONG LIVE SATCH...!

  • @awesomebarney1

    Yeah Vai sucks dick!

  • @figaz555 Dude...Shut up...Vai is equally amazing as Satch...they approach stuff different. Satriani learned him playing yes, but that doesn't mean he ''sucks dick''. Satriani would prolly say you suck dick if he read your comment.

  • @PhilosopherOnWeed joe was also vai's teacher which is cool.

  • @MYkillingFETISH Yeah I know. Vai and Satriani are both idols of me :)

  • I'd buy a ticket to watch him practice

  • He makes a very good point. If you cant do it, learn it!!! Nothing beats that advice!

  • A very positive, nice and honest person. Talent, intelligent, smart, modest... virtuoso, creative!!!

21st Century Jimi Hendrix - One robot surfing with the alien and flying in a blue dream :)

I think that Joe is one of musicians that does remarkable contribution in all times Rock Music with his style, technique and engine of creation :)

  • this video is a motivator for me to pick up my guitar and practice!

    thank you joe!

  • Great guitarist. He does not look unlike Golum.

  • Great advice that alot of guitar players need to take....there are just way to many players who focus on developing every aspect of their technical ability while forgetting that the guitar is a musical instrument made to express yourself musically in a creative way!

  • se parece a patricio rey y sus redonditos de ricota

  • great advice from the master himself

  • what tuning to choose?

  • my teacher said the same thing very wise words satch

  • Shit hes lookin old ay?

Wise words from a wise man.

  • think about it like this: you enjoy all that great music on your ipod/ mp3 right? well who works hard to make that music

  • hm he just said a mouthfull society wants musicians yea we do not this bullshit thats out today so start practicin

  • I cant ride the city bus because you know who acts like wild animals.

  • @ezl2010able the niggers?

  • Comment removed

  • The master. And how humble the guy is!

    Hats off!

  • nice

  • Yeah, Joe...write a book!

And thanks for the inspiration :-)

  • Amazing idea!

  • omg just yesterday it hit me after 5 years of playing guitar that i neeed to know every note on the guitar and know what sclae im playin and such. It'll make it soo much easier and faster to write songs.

  • haha he looks like a turtle! hes awesome though

  • well if i practiced with the intention of playing for myself in my own room that would still be right.

  • honistly, who wouldnt want to buy a ticket to watch satriani practice?

  • haha yeah, i think he knows very well that tons of people would buy tickets to see him practice :P

  • @shredfix1993 id go!

  • @shredfix1993 Anyone who isn't themselves a guitar player. That's who.

  • @shredfix1993

    11 year old coldplay fans.

  • @shredfix1993 ok Sure, I'd buy a ticket to watch him practice for an hour.

But Joe is STILL right. The second he's sold tickets to watch him practice, he's automatically sold himself out of a particular defense in that he's not just selling music and swag. Now he's selling his practice techniques. There isn't a future in selling praactice jams. but it sure would let him pay the bills for a month or two.

  • Comment removed

  • @shredfix1993 Yes, I'd buy a ticket to watch Joe Satriani practice. :)

  • What to say... I watch his work for 20yrs now and simply have nothing worth to say... But I am sure if only every 5th person is like him this crazy world would be much, much , much better place.. All hails to The Guru..

  • 1. every note on my guitar (almost done)

    2. chords

    3. scales

    4. pwnage

    5. thank satriani

  • Every aspiring guitarist should watch this once per week. Everything is true, and it's very well said. Not a big fan of Joe's music, but he certainly is a good guy and musician.

  • Joe Satriani is such an inspiration, he's not only a gifted musician but he is also an incredibly intelligent guy, the way he talk, what he's saying, his vision of music, sound, etc...

His words are food for though.

    Joe write a book !!

  • @F3FisGoodforYou

He actually wrote a book long time ago

  • @SnegoViKvsev ... Oh really, I'm gonna try to find it.. I know he wrote kind of guitar methods.. if you have the title or something, let me know :-)

  • @F3FisGoodforYou the book is called Joe Satriani: guitar secrets, according to the description its not like an autobiograpy or smthing, its a book with different guitar exercises and techniques

  • @F3FisGoodforYou I totally agree. Though I suppose my "shred phase" has come and gone, I will always have an ear for Joe. He's a humble guy with such an eloquent way of putting things, you can tell he made one hell of a teacher back in the day!

  • thanks man

    nice tips

  • Nice advice! :)

  • All hail the master!

Only one who devotes himself to a cause with his whole strength and soul can be a true master. For this reason mastery demands all of a person. Albert Einstein

  • That's not true. I'd surely pay to watch him practice. :)

  • i would pay for a ticket to see joe practice guitar

  • I'm no fan of Satriani or Vai or similar guys, but Satriani seems like a really nice guy.

  • This man is BIG in every aspect of life. Pure wisdom. Kids, listen a word.

  • im signing off youtube right now and going to learn the scales, especially sweep picking. thank you joe.

  • but remember no more than 45 mins..ok.. then go play for some pre-kers and work your way up to big ppl...

  • ouch!
