According to the books, they did. The movie just didn't show it. Also, the book didn't have Sauron dying so easily after getting his fingers cut off. Sauron was killed the old fashion way after killing most of the heros and setting the elven high king Gil-galad on fire.

@Lijnie235 Sauron's spirit and armor(since there was no body within his armor) was extremely hot and he was going to burn Isildur alive, like he had done to Gil-Galad. They were going to put the scene of Gil-Galad's death in the movie, but didn't, I'm not sure why, because it would have cleared things up for people who didn't read the book. But yeah, he was going to pick him up by the neck and burn him, which is a much worse death than being smashed by a mace and dying instantly.
