  • Every time I hear this album it reminds reminds me of humbug sweets because I remember being 13 on my bed doing my homework and listening to this album tucking into some pre christmas sweeties.I love the way good music stirs the senses like ordinary music never will.

  • Can't wait to hear this in Dublin ;)

  • i agree jakeenan-this album was the best for me-not just the drummer...everything and everyone-hence the late comment-im just remembering how much this album rocks! go go stone roses! modern music needs a wake up call!

  • one person is deaf

  • This is just remarkable drumming. On a different level in quality and complexity. If Bonham had done this all the Zeppelin sycophants would have been on it saying "this proves he's the best drummer". Instead Reni's never even on Top Drummers lists.... but he's back now! Can't wait to see them live. Couldn't get a ticket for Heaton but with luck someone will record the thing.

  • @MrThreshold2009 Shane Meadows is apparantly filming the shows. He's in talks with them. He said it's his dream cos he missed the Spike Island gig cos of a bad acid trip. All the boxes are being ticked. A new album has to be on the way too. Fingers crossed.

  • @MrThreshold2009 You make a valid point about Reni not being recognised in any lists, but technically speaking, this isn't actually a very complex piece of drumming at all. It does, however, require incredible timing and independence of both hands of feet - there aren't drummers who could play it this well (sad to say that I'm one of them!), however Bonham was on another level with many of the drum-riffs he played with LZ. Check out the drumming in Fool in the Rain, as an example... :)

  • @stroketheboat I'm a big Led Zeppelin fan and have been listening to the out-takes of Bonham on Fool in the Rain here on YouTube last week. It's a great example of the big heavy groove he gets going and the emphasis his fans place on his bass pedal work but, for me, Reni tops him. Daybreak is very complex in terms of its evolving structure and timing requirements. It's hardly about holding down the same heavy rhythm for 4 minutes.

Another underrated drummer is Jaki Liebeziet of Can. A genius.

  • Not So Keen On Second Coming - But I Really Like This

  • pure stone zeppelin

  • im sat in the house tonight listening to stone roses on u tube, and the more i listen the more i smile at thought of heaton park next year.........

  • the person that disliked this has no ears

  • This is real rock n roll.

  • Reni is a genius, such a underated drummer, and also has some of the best backing vocals lay down by a drummer ever, hes the whole package, supposed to be a demon on the guitar too!! What cant this man do!!! cant wait to see him once again play the drums at Heaton Park!

  • thank god there back, no one grooves like these. exactly what music needs right now and maybe these being back will bring more to follow and fuck bands like the wombats off our screens! x

  • Who is the one musically numb individual who doesn't like this track? Fuckwit

  • who said coldplay was cool?

  • Damn... Reni is slaughtering his drum kit in this song. Amazing.

  • The so-called crap second album. They're having a laugh. Most die-hard Roses fans play this album way more than the first one. I'm not saying its better its just that it has a touch of everything and sounds fresher.

As for Daybreak, I play it more than any other Roses track. I tend to play it on a 3 or 4 time loop, and mostly bail out back to the start at 5.09. Reni, man, what can I say.

  • @jakeenan Man: spot on. The most underrated record of the 90s that i'm aware of.

  • Proof, as if it were needed, that music critics are a bunch of cork sniffing wankers.

  • This song drives me mad!!

I love the Roses, but this is probably one my favourite song EVER!!!!!!!!

  • undervalued amazing album !!!

  • for Reni: perfect

  • Reni's drumming is just fucking genius.

  • @MrThreshold2009 If im right and i havent looked but im sure Reni walked out on this album so im unsure of the drummer.. could be wrong.. i aint gonna Wiki it.. lol.. using my 1994 memory... ??

  • @mapexblack Nope, Reni drums on every song on The Second Coming. He walked out shortly before the American tour in April 1995. Robbie Maddix replaced him after that.

  • @MrThreshold2009 Thought he walked half way through coz the album took so long to make... ill take your word for it then.. still awesome an album..

  • @mapexblack There's a bit more than "my" word for it. It's unmistakably Reni's style of drumming, he's creditied on the Second Coming inner booklet as drumming on all tracks, and is talked of extensively by the band members and others during his time with the recording of Second Coming. Also, he left the band in April 1995 FACT, long after they'd recorded the album.

Sorry to be pedantic but I like to wax lyrical about stuff I have knowledge on.

  • @MrThreshold2009 Now then... not Reni's original style of drumming.. its different from the 1st album.. very Bonham feel to it.. with the hi hat keeping the time.. ok ill agree and take what your saying on the rest as fact.. still havent looked it all up ha ha ha.. but your answers seem knowledgeable

  • @mapexblack Actually it's quite similar to his early style of drumming during the Roses' early days. Just listen to Garage Flower. And by "unmistakably Reni's style of drumming" I meant the incredible complexity and fluidity which is his trademark. Reni's genius was in his unmatchable range. Plus you can hear his backing vocals in the background. He'd upped from a 3-piece kit to a 4 piece for the Second Coming.

  • @MrThreshold2009 I like this he he

  • @mapexblack It is a bit more Bonham, i worked with Reni's niece at Trafford General Hospital, he sorted me a signed T-Shirt with a hand drawn picture of him playing a drum kit, and a personal message that said, "LISTEN TO THE BONHAM, AND LOOK AFTER YOUR MUM" so defo bonham inspired and the hi-hat tap is straight bonham, but i can also hear all his original moves, and it is a bit more like his garage flower pounding days too. Top drummer, one the best ever, and a top guy. They are reforming btw!!

  • This is so fucking groovy. Lovin' it!

  • This is really unique, like some kind of progressive indie stuff.

  • Stone Rose, Stone Rose (i.e. Debut) was and is still my fav album of all time. I waited eagerly for years for this album to come out. I liked it when I was in my late teens but I fucking love now I'm in my 30's. Underrated. First one is still better though.....only 'cus it reminds e of getting off with slags!!!

  • This one totally blows my mind!! Oh... right, not only this one!!!!!! :D

  • Looking at the LP in an honest light it has moments of greatness and moments of pure-filler (I will never ever be reconciled to Your star will shine or Straight to the man) begging you, good times and tightrope are like second stringers that just about pass the test and every other track verges on greatness....so it's easy to see why this LP confused a lot of folk. It blows hot and cold. But, when it's hot, it really is awesome..it's just not consistently brilliant like the debut.

  • What staggering drumming. 1 person who viewed this is a RIGHT wanker.

  • What staggering drumming.

  • correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Reni did the drums on this track...

  • @me19276 Not sure about playing. This is one of the few, if only, songs where every band member participated in its writing. So i'd assume he played the drums on, but it's possible he didn't.

  • @secondcoming90 I just know that he had to leave the bad due to illness, either his or families...hope all turned out well for him though.

  • @me19276 of course this is reni

  • @me19276 It is definitely Reni, luckily the Second Coming album was released before he left the Roses.

  • Second Coming was fucking great album. In their five year hiatus I'd been listening to The Stones and Jimi Hendrix et al. That album is the exact same sound I'd have wanted to make.

  • One of those songs you never want to end

  • Reni's drumming groove is fuckin mint!

  • a FANTASTIC groove!

  • back in 95 i thought this was just a jam that not one of the four had the balls to say was not good enough. i was wrong. it has stood the test of time and much underated. second half much weaker than the first though

  • my fave song ever xx one more for the dreamers

  • Second Coming all in all isn't that bad an album really, but when you've got such a brilliant debut as the Stone Roses had to follow up to, you can understand why it got some flack when it was first released.

Had it been some other band's debut lp, chances are they'd be the darlings of the press and the album would fly off the shelves easily enough...

  • Reni and Mani in masterful association with John S... all of them happily engaged in creation with Ian ...!

    Their best line up

  • ah, how good is this ....too good.. thank fk we had the roses..

  • How much soul has Ian Brown got? Fuckin tremendous

  • Did any rock band recorded pure jam song in the last 15 years like this one?

Ok, I know the answer: NO.

  • joy joy!!!

  • fantastic song.. love this..sounds so good..play it loud..still today this band p**** on everything around ...

  • Second Coming is a fantastic album. It still holds up. Shame Reni was under-used. He at least got to leave us with one of the great drum tracks of all time in Daybreak. Swing to burn, baby. A genius. The biggest loss from the whole Roses break-up saga. We can only dream of what a Reni solo album with friends could've been like. Make a comeback Reni, give us that album!

  • @jakeenan Definitely. Reni was the best musician in the Roses.

  • @jakeenan It's happening mate!

  • @wildj611 It sure is, dude! Never thought it possible. There's a lot on his shoulders- probably the most out of all them. Sure he can handle it though. He's got a bit of time to get his chops back in shape.

  • listen.....this is how it is and how its gonna stay....the stoneroses were a great band, something to be proud of !! Musical and lyrical genius!! Each member brought exeptional musical genuis to the party!! They are one of the finest acts in british history to ever leave our shores!! enough said. Long live the music . long live the members cos we all live in hope they will get their shit together and reunite , doubtfull but we live in hope!! can u imagine it???? love it!!!!

  • your an absolute twat ... ian brown dances wildly onstage ... hence being called the monkey king

  • "I am a leaf on the vine of time" genious

  • Dont worry people, Sanguru is from the states, so he doesnt really know the score, I love stone roses and im a southerner. Ian is well cool and this track is really sexy.

  • who else ever dropped Addis Ab ab ab ab aba into a song? Fuckin ace. And guy don't call ian brown handicapped, it's a monumental insult - the guy was not just about the music, he was and still is about a mindset and way of being, pure anti-establishment. He might not be the greatest singer but he is a big inspiration for a lot of my generation.

  • Amazing song with an amazing meaning.

Ian Brown is genius even without the roses, we had the roses and it was beautiful, but im happy to still have Ian with or without the roses, that time has past i think, Ian is still the man...king of the swingers!!!!!!!x

  • stone roses are fucking awesome, greatest band too have walked on this planet.

  • Reni during the garage flower years was madder than Moon...fact! By far the far the best and most underated drummer of a generation!

  • wat the fuck is your prob sanguru if it wasnt for ian brown the roses wouldnt be the roses the guys a legend ,like a say u must be a southener or a fuckin immigrant U TWAT

  • @Sanguru100 Twat

  • @Sanguru100 Watch the video for waterfall and see him thrash his octopus arms everywhere if you think he doesn't move.

  • REFORM THE ROSES

  • hahaha quality live

  • that riff makes me cum

  • LISTEN... its fucking brilliant!!!!!

  • its fucking shit like you....

  • Keep thinkin i'm about to hear "I'mmmmmm gonna break right into heaven!! "

  • they lost it .

  • I think Love Spreads is by far the best song on the album, and Driving South really sounds like a recycled version of it (I prefer to believe that instead of considering Driving South the original one). But Daybreak is also very close to Love Spreads (the bassline etc) , but I like both very much

  • driving south, love spreads, daybreak, tears and ten story love song is good. the rest sucks.

the others feels like they were made to fill up the space on the cd:P

  • @simcity1789 breaking into heaven and tightrope are fuckn sweet aswell

  • @campbelllovescock tightrope is soso, breakin to heaven get's good when it fucking starts :P

  • Superbe song. I like this type of songs, alongside with breaking into heaven, something burning, one love, fools gold, straight to the man...

do u know about any band that play this genre of music?

  • i've been looking in frank zappa, i guess it's kind of jazz-rock.. any other idea?

  • It's been a while since i was into the roses in a big way, and I've only just re-found them.

In the mean time my tastes have broadened and this song (and tightrope , breaking into heaven et al ) remind me so much of classic 20's Jazz.

Did the roses ever cite that as an influence?

  • well underated album this, deserved better, sounds awesome listening to it after a few years of not...

  • too right. i must admit i get a bit pissed off when people say it's shit. it's fuckin nut's!

i gotta admit though i do listen to a lot of blues and jazz, which this album tilts it's hat to through out.

  • To Waterfall64

Pete Townsend said Reni was the best natural drummer since Keith Moon. He didn't say that about Bonham.

Reni was the best musician in the band, Mani will back me up on that. Mani is the best bassist I have ever heard (I havent heard them all),and he insists that Reni was better than him.

    Reni, come back!

  • You simply cannot argue with the quality of the drumming on this track .... truly amazing stuff... but Bonham was a legend of drumming also. I doubt Reni could say the same about himself. Pete Townshend was a contemporary of Bonhams and so was a lot less likely to lavish praise on another bands drummer. Baker anyone?

  • *it

  • The Second Coming album is patchy in places, but if every track was as good as this one then i would've been amazing.

  • love the song,

    nice groove

  • Hah. I live in Longsight.

Jesus, Reni's one hell of a drummer. If anyone ever tells me again that Bonham is the best ever I will call them "stupid".

  • Bonham is the best drummer ever.

Call me blissfully stupid... just don't call me a cunt :)

  • K Moon!!!!!! much better then Bonham

  • no way, bonham is fucking miles above keith moon in talent. Led zepp drummer and guitarist are better, but the Who have a better bassist and im really torn between daultry and Plant for vocals

  • still K MOON for me miles above, but I suppose we both intitled to our opionion no one can say we litsen to crap cuz they both are great!! but what do U think of this dude RENI???? top ain't he????

  • reni is bloody amazing, fools gold and the funky bit from i am the resurection alone proove this. and all their songs have that groove behind them that Reni generates

  • U checked out THE STOSE ROSES [Waterfall] performance on Tony Wilson's show? where Reni just goes onnn one!!!!

  • ps: Ian Brown & John Squire should hav wrote the songs together cuz they both very talented like on the first album but this one is more squire which is still good but its lacking because of that as well

  • Yes Kieth Moon is a better drummer because he had his own unique sound and it's was cool when he smashes up his drum kit, he also has the better personality.

  • I must admit I am a first time Stone Roses listener. This is the first song of there's that I've really liked. First album was nothing special to me. Maybe I have to be from England to appreciate it more

  • for atlanta, georgia, to Longsight, Manchester...'

    chuffin' YES!

  • Fuck the brit awards, what a pile of shit The Stone Roses RULE

  • For love is the law here....

In my humble opinion never been touched for sheer musicality and downright soul since. Quality all day long and through the night to boot.

  • so groovy,,, great sound really..

"one more for the dreamers" classic..!!

  • This is sweet!

  • Cool As Fuck!!!!

  • not bad...

    good !

  • this is truly awesome, great musicians showing just how good they are

  • keep on keepin strong....

  • amazing drumming, unfortunately we dont see these features very often nowadays, except in prog rock or heavy metal.. nice one reni

  • Fucking amazing !

  • prrrrropa nosh ladies and gents..cant imagine my life without this song nuff love

  • One of the greatest albums of all time and I'm not overplayin it, its awesome and this song contains some of my favourite lyrics on the album . . . ."leaf on the vine of time ". . . ."black bones..."

  • @SLOWEYSHEFFIELD And was slated on release!!! bastards.. its AWESOME!!! always was in my eyes...

  • reni again proving he is one of the most inportant drummers of that generation.

  • Level on the line im a leaf on the vine of time, love it and yes, great drumming.

  • This is such an under-rated song- it's a beautifully balanced jam between the 4 of them.

  • This is an underated album I can't believe they slated it

  • Yeah, amazing drums

  • Great song.
