OpenSolaris is easy because it does not have drivers for your hardware and most don't work right once you install them. Not even drivers for a NIC. You have to go to another operating system and download load drivers to get a network connection and know UNIX well to install it. This is why OpenSolaris = fail at least with proprietary Solaris or with a Linux distro you at least get drivers to get out on the Internet & get everything else you need to get it up and running
Too bad Oracle discontinued OpenSolaris in favor of the proprietary Solaris (which is the same thing, but proprietary.) Thank the universe for OpenIndiana, even though it's name isn't as cool. =)
Solaris rocks but pitching to UNIX windows users is a bit naive. Anyone with more than four neurons is already using Linux, Solaris or BSD. Which leaves the other 95% of the planet who are lucky to be able to find the power button on their laptop.
@icfnord: I wish it wasn't true but every time I have to troubleshoot someone's Windows PC its always a major headache. I try to get people to switch to Ubuntu Linux and charge them for the installation as well as teaching them how to use it but they want to keep Windows despite the fact that they got a virus from opening up a "song" called Hannah_Montana.exe. Its maddening.
Dont get me wrong, Opensolaris is great, actually i use it A LOT (like right now)
But instead of bashing windows, Sun should at least get sound working out of the box (when i disconnect my headphones from my lenovo, I get that awful noise)
And another thing, in each opensolaris release you get a lot of improvements, that's great, because the developer comunity is made by serious people managing proper engineering, not hackers wanabes / anti microsoft teenagers like in other open OS communities.
I used to have ubuntu and kubuntu. They were nice. for a normal user ubuntu is better than xp. But developing software in windows is way more easy. Then i tried opensolaris. And finally windows 7, a big improvement over the other windows releases. You know what? i formated my hard drives and installed win7 for my spare time, and opensolaris for real work.
And im really happy with this, Both systems are great, opensolaris is amazing, is the ultimate OS for developers.
No mate you got it wrong. OpenSolaris is based on UNIX not linux. Linux is is a new kernel software written by torvalds and with communities. Linux is not UNIX, so OpenSolaris is not linux or ubuntu nor Mac.
Moreover Mac OSX also is not Linux....just google it to find the correct answer.. :-). However all this Operating Systems(MacOS,Linux,OpenSolaris,Solaris) does the same look and feel at the some degree..
Therefore, they are called UNIX-like Operating System.
Mac OSX is NOT Open source operating system. OSX is based on BSD unix and have some open parts but major things that differentiate OSX from BSD`s are not open, but Apple proprietary code and not open.
So Apple OSX is closed source proprietary system with some open parts.
For f*** sakes, quit fighting over distros, people. No one cares which one YOU personally like better. If you use Ubuntu and someone else uses Mint or Fedora or anything else, it's a testament to the versatility and flexibility of the platform. Competing distros aren't the enemy, but acting like they are just might be.
It took 10 years to SUN understand the power of open source. Now with this stupid video they try to convince the people. Linux is everywhere, too late SUN Microsystems but keep trying!
Thanks for java and everything, but support Linux instead.
The repositories are free, and you can download the quarterly bundles for free. What you seem to be talking about is SUN support contracts for Solaris, not opensolaris. So either you have no idea or you are a liar. Either way doesn't look good.
Go to opensolaris support page, read FAQ and see for yourself:
Q: If you download OpenSolaris, but do not purchase an OpenSolaris Subscription, what can you receive?
A: You can download OpenSolaris and receive package updates via the community but you are not entitled to any support from Sun nor will you have access to the package updates from the Support Repository.
That simply means you can not access SUN's own support servers if you don't have a support contract, and thus lack a support account. You are still free to get the patches and updates via the community websites. The fixes made it downstream to the source repositories, that is the beauty of open source.
So it looks like your comprehension skills are not there (unless you are trying to be obtuse to guise intellectual honesty).
Uh? You're all over the place mixing and matching kernel/userland as well as opensolaris and solaris to fit whatever agenda it is that you have. In any case, all you have to do is: $ BUILD=`uname -v | sed -e "s/snv_//" -e "s/[a-z]//"` $ pfexec pkg refresh $ pfexec pkg install entire@0.5.11-0.${BUILD} $ pfexec pkg install SUNWipkg@0.5.11-0.${BUILD} $ pfexec pkg install SUNWinstall-libs $ pfexec pkg image-update
Maybe SUN should sysadmin your systems for free too? Jeez.
Solaris is far more powerful than Linux, AND it's properly engineered vs the ad-hoc approach to Linux development (not saying there's anything wrong with it, just that proper engineering leads to better code quality). DTrace? ZFS? You NEED Solaris (or FreeBSD, but OpenSolaris has always worked out of the box for me while I need to tinker for hours to get FreeBSD running to my satisfaction)
If you're new to unix-like systems, try ubuntu first, it's probably the most friendly to "newbies". Spend a few months getting to know it, then you can try others like various linux distros, *bsd, and opensolaris... You can even keep a few of them, multi-booting on the same machine
people who are saying Solaris are noob because OpenSolaris & Solaris are diffrent Opemsolaris is way uptodate in stuff Solaris is a lil old but 100% stable Vista is wank
Solaris is great if you're a developer or hosting provider, but it's a joke to assume the common user would replace windows with it. When Sun get's a vast majority of other software publishers to make titles of software for solaris, then we can talk. Until then, it doesn't matter how much more stable or fast it is because people don't install an OS just to use the OS. They use it to run applications.

Hahha, yes yes, BUT. people use more then one machine and more then one OS.
Also people migrate from windows, like myself many years ago, But they got to be informed about freedom and posibilities.
This guy on this video mostly is selling air, since he is not saying users need to update to /dev to be semi-secure.

I'm not trying to start a flame or anything, but out of curiosity, in what way is Linux superior/inferior to OpenSolaris?
GeekyPenguin 2 years ago
Inferior: A little less software and hardware support (but still lots, including things like Nvidia 3d drivers)
Superior: Better kernel and stability,
Dtrace
ZFS
Zones (better than freebsd jails even)
much more i don't know a lot about that has to do with network virtualization

I am VERY interesting in information: what is that working repository that could give me security patches for released Opensolaris 2009.06?
(Without access to support repo)
Also support repo reportedly include closed source portions and is NOT fully publicised.
IF source is avilable, that does NOT mean that I as user have security packages for opensolaris available. I Don`t have them.
If I want them I need to pay for them. And that is whole point.
Care to point where is that repo of yours?
