Oud comes from "l'oud" or "al'oud" which is Arabic for "with wood." Instruments that pre-date the oud had a back made from a gourd or a tortoise shell, not wood. This word also led to the Western European "lute" (English), "laute" (German), and "luth" (French), also "luthier"-one who builds string instruments.
Great ... Oud is the best instrument i ever seen and used ... and its related to our culture ... thats wat makes it more precious .... unfortunately in some countries ... they sell it for economic reasons not for the love of it ... Etc : Kuwait ...

I agree with Oud81, he was stating that the Iraqi Ouds and Oud players are the best, followed by Egyptian and then Syrian Ouds. That is true.
