  • Had IT band issue my first year running then plantar fascitus and posterior tibial tendonitis my second year running. Started barefoot running (or running in Vibrams) and I'm sold. I won't ever go back to the "high tech" shoes ever again.

  • Great tips littered throughout this video if you're going to attempt barefoot running. You'll learn real quick whether your form could use an overhaul!

  • Ah, never mind...it's much slower than 180.

  • Does the music accompanying the video have 180 bpm by any chance? It sounds like it...I may add it to my running mix.

  • Like the running and tips but not a fan of the shirts. Big thumbs up though!

  • The area you run is a great place to be murdered and not found for months. Other than that it absolutely beautiful.

  • Quite possibly the worst shirt ever. Otherwise great video!

  • This video is a favorite on Roseau

  • Ughhh!!! I am a barefoot runner but I tripped over my dad's shoes and I sprained my metatarsal tendon and now I'm stuck in a boot and forced to not barefoot run til I'm out of it. Watching this video just relaxed me yet made me more anxious to go back to it as soon as possible. Every single night I have dreams of running barefooted. Every single night. It sucks so much to not do this. God really blessed humans with the ability to run

  • So...what are barefoot runners doing in the winter?

  • @slomo8888 go minimalist or tuff it out much like our early ancestors did.

  • @slomo8888 probably thick socks plus finger shoes? :D

  • look down, there might be nails. (i'm not hating, just being real. i run with 0 drop shoes).

  • @jason : I think you have missd out a word in the captioning at about 1.20, should there be the word contact or friction in it?

  • Very bad form, why not sit down on a weelchair?

  • I definitely couldn't pull this off in San Francisco. Good form, man!

  • @Rubynas My PF never got as bad as yours, but I've slowly been making the change to minimalist shoes (Merrell, but others are good too) and my PF has reduced significantly. If you're at the point where it's hard to stand, however, I'm not so sure.

  • You do better if you don't let you heal touch the ground, you get a extra spring and can go a wee bit further.

  • I'd love to run where the video was filmed. The scenery seems so relaxing.

  • Barefoot running can cause a spinal disc herniation.

  • @sjrduarte

and exactly how would it do that? Compared to landing on the heel, how would it be worse the the disc, when the impact on the ground is less harsh?

  • I suffer from plantar fasciitis for a year already.I can't stand up for more than a minute, barefoot...it can be very painful. Ufff...just by looking at this guy running barefoot I almost experienced pain. Interesting video!!!But If anybody had plantar fasciitis and had tried this I would like to know. Thanks

  • This soundtrack is ripped from Braid, great game! Nice vid too

  • On any youtube video you only have to scroll down two or three replies to find the words, 'fukin' and retarded' . How fukin retarded is that? Be nice to each other people, you never know it might even make you feel a little better about youself.

  • i like his shirt

  • Are the drills explained in more detail on the website? I could not find any information on them (i.e. Skip A, Skip B, etc) Thanks!

  • All I can think about is Braid when watching this..

  • This is ridiculous -___- Humans invented footwear for a reason.... Im going to say the same thing Olympic Runner Ryan Hall Said... until i see a barefoot runner able to compete with the best im sticking with shoes

  • @delxart lol you're a fool. olympic runners wear spike shoes which are minimalist running shoes, with form closer to a barefoot runner than a shod runner. big, padded and cushioned running shoes are a great way to get knee pains, shin splints, and a variety of other problems that come with heel striking.

  • @mojomatt176 I'm not a fool... i have 3 years of track and cross country i know my stuff, i actually saw Ryan Hall running when i was training in Mammoth . We train in the bigger more stable shoes called "Trainers" but we RACE in Flats or spikes that are very thin. We never train in Flats because the lack of support leads to injuries. It also depends on your foot type, im an overpronater so i require shoes with extra stability some people need thin shoes to avoid injury.

  • @delxart 3 years of running? Very impressive. you think you're an overpronator. if you start running barefoot, you'll quickly learn proper form. it seems you've fell victim to shoe industry propaganda and conventional wisdom. do some more research on barefoot running and you'll be surprised at what you learn. type in christopher mcdougall on youtube. he's the master of barefoot running

  • @mojomatt176 No ive been running longer, Im in high school and have 3 cross country seasons and 3 track seasons under my belt. Yeah i have read up on it and i think its good if you want to do it as hobby but when you are running competitively you should wear shoes... I am an overpronator -___- its not really a bad thing its just how my feet are, its like having high arches or flat feet.

  • @delxart hey same here man. im a junior but i did xcountry 1 year and track 3 years. put simply, shoes had always hindered my running form and calf strength until i started barefoot running. through barefoot running, i lost my plantar fasciitis and shin splints as well as much faster 200m times. i actually have high arches like you mentioned but with enough practice, the ligaments and tendons condition themselves to barefoot running. only suggestion is give it a try for a couple months.

  • @delxart The guy in this video won the Air Force Marathon a couple of weeks ago. Running isn't just about time and speed. Barefoot improves form and is, for me, a sublime and wonderful experience. You may not know what you are missing.

  • @starbase606 Well where i live i couldnt run barefoot if i wanted to (x i run on the Jurupa Hills in San Bernandino County California, theres too many thorns, rock, and other crap.... ive had a thorns that go over an inch into my trainers, imagine if i was barefoot.

  • @starbase606 oh and for me running is about time and speed, i run for my High Schools Cross Country team and i do Track

  • @delxart experience/being better doesnt make you right. ive ran more than you; doesn't mean im right. and that goes for ryan. there have been olympic bf runners. ryan wasn't thinking critically. maybe there aren't many elite bf runners because there just arent many to begin with (society). running for speed is one-dimensional. i'd rather be all-around functionally fit and running at 90. to need shoes just to run, is a little embarrassing. think critically, especially about your own arguments.

  • @XDeuce1 Ughh ok douche , like i said i run in The Jurupa hills in San Bernandino , running barefoot would be fucken retarded. Ive had a spike go completely through the support on my trainers and thorns and rocks get stuck all the time. If i rad barefoot my feet would have been amputated by know. How about you think critically and think about why shoes were invented in the first place and people in poverty without them so desperatley want shoes. And i run in competitions i care about speed!!

  • I am an ultramarathon runner. would like to start barefoot running but have rather severe over-pronation. can I ditch the orthotics and start?

  • @MrRorymunro Yes, just start slowly. Your calves will be pretty sore for the first couple of runs, even as conditioned runner.

  • You are right! here is the correct interpretation from da Vinci “the human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art.” Dr. Mark

  • The foot is not derived from human engineering..

  • @gotzJazzhandz I agree. Human evolution is more so. I guess it's how one defines engineering.

  • Appreciate all the wonderful and insighful comments that continue to flow from this video. On the question below...i started cutting the heels off shoes 5 years ago. Have 30 years of competitive running behind me. The pace is not faster now but the effort and the beating is removed. Mark

  • marks running form is beautiful! how long does it take to reach that type of stride/pace?

  • I like the tie-dyed shirts, Mark.

  • @voidwareprohibited In climates such as South Africa we grow up barefoot only wearing shoes for formal occasions & school. Even here most outdoor activities are conducted sans shoes. Hence a lot of barefoot running is done in sport up to high school level. My response was of surprise because after 50 years of running for fun and competition it is a 'norm' for me - especially in cross country, track and sometimes road running. But personal perception should not be universal.

  • Great video.....makes me want to get out and run right now. As a long time runner just now discovering the minimalist philosophy for myself, it seems to make perfect sense when you consider our anatomy. I watch my 2 year old daughter run barefoot and I wonder, if she never wore shoes, would she need to be taught proper running technique or is all this talk about technique really just because we have to unlearn all the improper methods of running that have been ingrained in us over the years?

  • We have to learn how to run barefoot? Surely it's natural and should form a large part of any athlete's training?

  • BF running sucks in the cold....

  • I notice that music from Braid!

  • @RonBurgundy161 ah thats where i recognize it.

  • How long will he keep that pace? That's almost too fast. Don't you worry about stepping on glass or dog poop? I like running in comfortable sandals like my Brancas. I like the music in the background and the dyed shirts.

  • I don't get the 'pick up your feet' thing. Why pick them up if it's just for the sake of picking up? That sounds like a waste of energy, doesn't it?

Any legit reason why I should strain to pick my feet up?

  • @Jouwl - I would say it's because the energy needed to swing an object increases the further it is from the pivot (it will travel a much greater distance). It's easier to return your leg to starting position if it is shorter (held up), just like a dancer spins faster when they hold their arms close. There will be less force required, and thus less stress on your body.

  • @awakingmind You mean that the moment of inerta of the leg decreases? I can accept that... but is this something that you should be actively thinking about or is it automatic at all possible running speeds?

When I get a chance of watching myself running in profile (in some window or whatever), my feet rarely reach the height of my knees. When I increase pace towards end of run, feet are at buttocks.

So, think about or not? :-)

  • BRAID SOUNDTRACK!!!

  • Very nice video. This is a very pleasant way to explain to friends and family why I've been running barefoot for the last couple of years or so. I still need to work on form. I don't seem to have the high back kick like most BF runners do. I'm also pretty dang slow, but hey, I just turned 58.

  • /watch?v=evdDbUrWn1k

  • Thanks Gary for the post. Good to hear from you. Nothing misleading. The video shows where I am now after "relearning how to run" and "progressing gradually". This is the message we aim to share if you have had a trail of running injuries and have been told or think "running is bad for you". Hope all is well in San Antonio and you are staying healthy. Mark

  • Great Video...however, Mark HAS NOT run all those mile Barefoot...every marathon, every CISM XC race, Armed Forces Race, etc that we ran against each other he was shot in racing shoes.....he has picture perfect form....and comes into the minimulism world with a ton more knowledge and patience than the typical runner....a bit misleading

  • Great video. I've been a VFF runner for almost 3 years, not counting the 6 months to transition. 20 year RIP (Runner In Pain). Gave it up at age 45. Now do not run for fitness unless it is part of our CrossFit regimen that day, but when I do, it is ONLY in VFFs. Don't have the guts to go completely naked! Key thing: Start slowly! Your calves will appreciate that!

  • Thank you all for the nice comments on our video. I think the pace is about 6 min/mile which is exactly waht I ran for 26 miles in Boston a week after we shot this (2:37:00 age 44). On arm carry...use elastic recoil and stretch/shortening reflex by simply driving back lightly. the arms then spring forward in relaxed effortless way. this is the parallel movement to the hip release where you simply allow your hip to extend back as you touch the ground and they too return like a rubber band.

  • Wonder approximate what pace we're seeing in the vide?

  • where are the vibram fivefingers?! GEEZUS

  • @Babuuun Nature gave us our own Vibram FiveFingers :P

  • Random observation: the music used here is also in Braid, a video game.

  • This is the best video I have ever seen on running barefoot. I am a huge fan and can't wait to do some trail running/hiking this year. I am talking 100 mile trails here in Michigan.

  • Beautiful running.

  • Why do you guys run with your arms soo far down your bodies? I keep them up high cause I believe that's how it's done. Any thoughts on that?

  • @LiquidYogi It depends from person to person on that.

  • Nice running guys!! Great vid! Fine music too.

  • Love the Celtic tunes! Fantastic view on the way and benefits of running barefoot.

  • Beautiful video, gorgeous music and excellent information. What a way to see the running technique actually being done. Totally inspired me ... going outside now!

    Thank you!

  • Technique seems good, but I wonder whether these guys would be able to run a marathon barefoot, on asphalt, without getting blisters, using the exact same running style as in the video. THAT is the acid test for good barefoot technique. On long distances, even the tiniest flaw in technique will be amplified, which for the most part means painful blisters.

(For the record, I am a barefoot runner myself. Still working on my stride though, trying to eliminate technical errors causing blisters)

  • Great, inspiring, thank you!

  • Thks for sharing this impressive clip. Barefoot Paul!

  • Beautiful running, inspiring clip. Thank you

  • The music is good, the beginning reminds me of Vivaldi.

  • Near Flawless Running Technique.......it would have to be to be doing it at this pace on paved hardtop.......the first fellas technique is a little better, his step and strike are shorter and thus cadence is higher.......the higher the cadence, the less the acceleration/deceleration and less vertical changes. Apparently the first chap has been running barefoot his whole life, it shows. Nicely done boys !

  • Is the lack of cushion bad on your joints without shoes, or does the absorption of landing on the heels of your feet make up for it?

  • @Michigan1985 The vast majority don't ever land on the heels when running. Most BF runners have the midfoot strike, where the heel just kisses the ground for a split second before being picked up again. The lack of cushion is only bad if you overdo it when you are starting out, when your feet aren't yet used to what's required to BF run. After practice, BF-style is smoother and softer than any cushioning shoe could ever give. Counter-intuitive, but any of us will tell you the same.

  • @pietbarber Oops. Typo. Meant to say the impact absorption of the balls of the feet. I've been barefoot running almost my whole life. I didn't even know there was a "revolution" until last year. I thought I was just some crazy person with some strange style of running.

  • What was the music? Very beautiful.

  • Okay, found it. Its "Downstream", by Shira Kammen.

  • @ibmjones The music in the video is the song "Downstream" by Shira Kammen from her album "Music of Waters".

  • Comment removed

  • This was a really great video. I've watched it 3 times now; I really like the drills. I've been a VFF runner for 18 months and 1400 miles, with only a 1-3% of it actually being "barefoot". I started from nothing, not ever running further than 6 miles before Christmas 2009. I'll try using these drills to transform from "shuffling ambulator" (I don't like the term "jogger") into a "runner"

  • Absolutely beautiful video... an inspiration!

  • Oh, how beautiful! I remember running barefoot as a kid and even in college. It was wonderful! ...Eventually, enough "experts" convinced me how dangerous it was, taught me a "proper" heel-strike form, and sold me some big squishy shoes(the Brooks BEAST, aptly named). Needless to say, I soon developed chronic injuries (Which I foolishly blamed on the years of barefooting!), and sprained my ankles repeatedly! Now, as I approach 40, I am happily re-learning to run pain free Again:)

  • This is awesome! I have seen many people come forward as experts on barefoot running, but to get a doctor to do it takes time. Thank you Dr. Mark Cucuzzella!

  • Man I wish I could run like that.

  • Antietam look like a beautiful place to run!
