  • I have a Ray and a Jeremy; my life story , but in the ending i decided to marry a Jeremy. I was tired of being a unrequited love.

  • I cry every time when I hear "I DID LOVE YOU" I hope my ex boyfriend apologysed for being so rude to me and admit that he loved me instead of being so cruel =(. I did love him...

  • Sigh. This movie holds so much meaning to me as I've been in Mirabelle's situation - sadly twice. Giving more than I should of in hopes of the possibilities, being told I was loved when it was too late.Strong life lessons learned.Shopgirl holds a direct line to my heart, speaks on so many levels about unrequited love.

  • I love this movie and the novella. I believe Ray say "by the way, I did love you" to validate the relationship, maybe more for him than Mirabelle, but I think for her to think it wasnt in vain, that there was something real there - no matter if it worked out or not. Still sad as hell though.

  • The romantic story of real life! A girl who finds her heart BEFORE it is too late. And a man who realizes his heart...AFTER it is too late. What I wouldn't give to hear those 3 words ..BEFORE it is too late. But I've got a Ray Porter

  • I cry EVERY. TIME.

  • @idksmf So do I!

  • @misslv80 me too.

  • @idksmf , YES ME TOO!! IT IS SO SAD AND ROMANTIC AT THE SAME TIME!

  • Me too. I loved this "fuckin" movie and I am 59 years old!

I loved the nostalgia of the old Beverly Hills department store she worked in selling gloves, and the fact that she was a young artist living in the Silver Lake district.

  • @geezloueeze Great observation about nostalgia. A lot of Mirabelle's wardrobe is vintage-inspired. Even the Prada dress that Ray buys her has an old-fashioned, timeless quality about it.

  • I LOVE THIS FUCKIN MOVIEEEEEE!!!1

  • misslv80, this is my favorite movie of all time too. i quote the lines from it all the time.

  • "I did love you", why do those words always come so late, when you've already moved on...;(

  • @MsCoquito5 I know what you mean. It's like the old saying goes: "You don't know what you've got till it's gone." :-(

  • Is there any way you could post up the scenes where Steve Martin's speaking in a voiceover here at the end and where he sez "some nights alone, he thinks of her?" I wood love 2 have that saved on my favorites list!

  • @AntonyC83 I'll do my best. Thanks for the heads up. :-)

  • Thanx alot I'd realy apreciate it. Thats 1 of my favorite scenes in tha movie. I'd do it myself but I just dont have tha technical knowledge as 2 how 2 do that nor tha time and its not on here anywhere. Thanx again:)

  • Not to be the one who says it but, "the book is better" I love this movie, but you really understand more of what is human about these people and how Jeremy is redeemable if you read the book

  • @AmandaKayO i wouldn't say the book is better, i would say where the movie doesn't disclose somethings the book does...and Steve does a really great job at narrating the entire book....i would say the MOVIE is a compliment to the book!

  • @shinediaz26 Very well put! :-)

  • I love this movie and it hit so close to home.

  • i love claire danes! watching her cry, makes me want to cry. she doesnt try to make it look pretty it is just real.

  • Agreed. Watching her become Mirabelle, it reminded me of my own experience (and the experience of a lot of people who have seen the movie), the feeling of unrequited love for someone that is impossible.

  • I am Mirabelle- I am with someone that doesnt love me as much as I love him- It is just a matter of time before he lets me go....this movie is so true to life

  • I know exactly how you feel. I've been there, but the best advice is what Mirabelle said, "I can either hurt now, or hurt later. Now, I guess." I wish I had followed her advice! It would have saved me a lot of pain and heartache, which is probably what you're going through. Hang in there - you'll find someone better, trust me! :-D

  • Thank you so much for your kind words...I should have chosen to hurt early.....

  • i got my heart broken in two pieces over someone's knee during this scene...and i'm a guy.

  • i love the part in the movie when ray is looking up at the stars and he says some nights alone he thinks of her and some nights alone she thinks of him..Some nights these thoughts occur at the same moment. And Mirabelle and Ray are connected without ever knowing it...It is so sweet yet sad at the same time. This movie gets to me everytime :)

  • I did let someone go because my love for her was not the same as hers for me. I had dreams that we shared but i was afraid to commit. I knew that to make this person happy i would have to hurt another. I could have done it but it was easier to hurt someone like mirabel. I often reflect and wonder what could have been. She found her jeremy and is happy once again. To love is to be human. Try not no analyze it. Just appreciate it. It could be gone tomorrow.

  • I was like Ray and hurt someone who only wanted to be loved. I had to let her go because i felt that to let it go on would make the pain more severe later. I'm glad she found her jeremy and is happy with him. She gave me a glimpse of what could have been. I loved her but i knew it was not fair to not love her the same way she loved me. I moved on but i still wonder like ray does at the end.

  • claire danes portrays the pain of a wounded heart so well, just as she did in 'Evening'. Check out the little known film 'It's all about love' - she's wonderful in this film too!

  • One of my favourite, favourite movies of all time. This scene always makes me sob like a baby, because the whole movie is one i relate to so much. Only I never got an apology from my Ray. :(

But I think I've found my Jeremy, so things are looking up.

  • Good for you! Congratulations! :-)

  • aw, i've never seen any youtube users be so nice to each other as i have on this video, on this page. usually people post offensive and mean things to each other, but not here. how cute :)

  • LOL it helps to moderate the comments. :-)

  • As a guy, I have to say, this is one of my favorite movies of all time. The story, the acting and the soundtrack are all beautifully done. It brings tears to my eyes everytime I watch it. I have sent this clip to so many people and they have gone and watched the movie and totally agree with me. I really do not know why men are so afraid of movies like this. Please do not be afraid of your feelings. And, yes I am married and have children and grandchildren and fought in Vietnam. Beautiful.

  • Bravo, elcamman50. I appreciate your eloquent comment and honesty (and your service to our country). :-)

The reason why I love this movie is because Steve wrote a realistic story where the two leads don't end up together, but I've been in that May-December situation before myself, that's why I can totally relate to Mirabelle's choice, which was the right one in the end.

However, there is still that part of me that wishes Ray and Mirabelle should have ended up together.

  • Thank you for the kind words. Movies like this and my other favorites: Oscar and Lucinda and, Till Human Voices Wake Us are, to me, works of art. Actually, my wife and I divorced a few years ago, but still remain good friends. It saddens me when I see young people comment so derogatorily about movies. One of them I read about The Return of the King said the last scene when Frodo is leaving and he kisses Samwise was so gay. Why is that the first thing they think of. That is sad. Thank you.

  • Yeah, that is sad. It's unfortunate that today's generation is so cynical (Including mine - I'm 29). I'm glad there are still intelligent films being made like Shopgirl, and others, and there are still people out there who appreciate them.

  • misslv80, one more thing. I went through something similiar to this story years ago. Except the roles were reversed. I was in love with this woman and she could not reciprocate the same love to me. With her, it was her family who would not accept me. So, she made a choice, and I am sad to say it was not me. Her love for us was not strong enough to overcome the feelings of her family. So, today we each live in the shadow of the love we have for each other. Life can be like the movies.

  • I'm sorry things didn't work out. Sometimes our family and friends don't always know what's best for us even thought they mean well. :-(

Yes, I agree, life can be like the movies.

  • I posted a comment on your page-did you see it?

  • Yes, I did. Thanks for all your comments.

I have to approve all comments because I used to get a lot of spam, so that's why it takes me a bit to get to them. :-)

  • misslv80, if you go to the search engine, Ask-

and ask, why wasn't Shopgirl nominated?-

several critics weigh in on 'why?'- check it out.-

Claire Danes should have been nominated!!

And Steve Martin also-the list of 'should of been nominated, but wasn't' is long.

  • I will check it out. Thanks, Gracie! :-D

  • I don't know- this is a mystery, Steve Martin is well liked in Hollywood-I don't think politics had anything to do with it...I really would like to know the answer to this one....

  • Hmmm...I don't know either. That's a good question! I'd have to look back and see who was nominated in 2005 to find out.

  • This really is a great movie- Steve Martin outdid

himself- what a gem- and Claire Dane is great!

and yes, this should have been nominated for acting and writing- how was this overlooked?

  • bah! you left out the best part - his lil line at the end of the scene - about wanting only a part of her and not all of her -- :(

  • Sorry. I didn't care much for the narration. That's one of the few complaints I have about the film. I think that line is in the book, though.

  • I agree, I didn't know what to think of this film but have seen similar incidents and loved how it ended...good closure. its just great..loved this movie

  • Ray and Mirabelle are just so honest they are perfect for each other. What a great movie.

  • I LOVE this movie.

    Brandie :)

  • me too

  • This was a touching, beautifully written, and beautifully acted story. I'm normally not a Steve Martin fan, but he really delivered and surprised me by being a phenomenal writer. And Claire is just lovely. Such a lady.

  • Teasymphony,

Couldn't have said it better myself. I wish Claire Danes could have been nominated for a Golden Globe or Oscar for her performance and Martin for writing the screenplay. Such a pity! :-(

  • *sighs*

  • Her reaction at 1:26 is....painfully honest? Not sure how to describe it.

  • It's true. To me it says, "I still love you," or "I will always love you."

  • To me it says: "I still harbor a lot of guilt (and un-forgiveness for self) about my inability to be emotionally expressive, and my general impotence concerning relating to you as a unique human being, instead of just an object used for my purposes."

  • Sad, but true (I'm assuming you meant from Ray's point of view).

That is called (some) men's inability to commit or the fear of fully giving in to the feeling of falling in love. Maybe that's why Ray decided to go back to his old gf in Seattle, simply because she was "there", and even though there's an attraction, I don't think it is love.

Mirabelle, on the other hand, was the "real deal" and Ray just couldn't deal with it. That's why Jeremy, in the end, got the girl.

Every girl is someone's SHOP GIRL....& they are better for it...

  • so true

  • This movie reminded me so much of Lost in Translation. It was actually similar to that movie in a lot of ways.

I just got done watching this movie about an hour ago, and I had to say it was brilliant.

  • Great scene. Notice how it starts off almost just like their 2nd conversation at the counter; except here, he didn't know how to respond to her reference to the TY note whereas she didn't know how to respond to his reference to the package. She's become the confident one and he is now unsure of himself.

  • great movie! watch the movie first then read the book. all of those hidden messages in the movie that we couldn;t make out is further explained in the book.the book is so good, very descriptive.ray was to immature and to deattached from intimacy that he couldn't see how fragile, innocent and pure mirabelle was.thus hurting her more.RAY WAS IN THERAPY...HELLO!! he thought as long as he could give her a piece of him.."PIECE" That it was suffecient for her....not knowing men are different than woman.

  • Hi Shinediaz26,

Thank you for your comment. I also read the book before I saw it. I wish they could have included some things that were in the book in the movie somehow such as more about Mirabelle's family. If we knew a little more about them, it would have explained more about her character, plus the scene at the gala where she talks about lying. The way it was presented in the book was awesome. In the movie she just sits there. The movie is not without its flaws.

  • this book and movie makes me cry everytime i see it.possibly because mirabelle was so emotional and alert at expressing it.the movie left out alot of power points...it left me hanging by a thread....but boy i was so glad when i heard he had a book and i purchased it at barnes and noble for $5.00.thanks for the clip.

  • You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed it! :-)

  • I accidentally removed the comment by lifesahandbag - sorry! Here's your original comment:

I know this is going to sound weird, but I LOVE the way Claire Danes looks when she's either crying or juuust about to cry. Her eyes are just so emotional!

My response: It doesn't sound weird at all. I agree. Danes put a lot of emotion and feeling into her role as Mirabelle. I wish she was nominated for a Golden Globe or Oscar that year!

  • the soundtrack by Pheloung is awesome

  • incredible - they ask eachother "are you happy" they both answerd "yes" but you can see and you can hear they mean "NO" - like in real life!

  • I wonder what Mirabelle meant when she said, "The lower intensity is nice." It still puzzles me what that exactly means because of HOW she says it. It doesn't sound like she really means it, so I totally understand what you're saying when they say "Yes", but it really means "NO".

  • Oh when she said "The lower intensity is nice" eveything was clear to me.

She found peace, but not passion - and lower intesity means - very discreet - BORING.

When she went back - Mirabelle turned her head and looked at him - and he didn't moved at all - c'on is clear. In Shopgirl II they will marry!

  • Ah! Gotcha. :-) Now it all makes sense.

Yeah, I know. Despite what Ray did to her by cheating on her, I still wanted them to end up together. I've kind of warmed up to Jeremy by watching the movie over and over, but he just couldn't compete IMHO.

    Steve Martin is The Man!!!

  • Steve martin is the man - I agree 100%

  • "lower intesity" means she is doing ok, minus the pain from the breakup, and the depression she was battling.this is explained more in the book.she is still healing she just doesn't have any stumbling blocks in her way.

  • "lower intensity"...perhaps not manic ....flying high on love,

just something sane, calm...."boring" to Mirabelle perhaps...but, good for her....good to her....

Sometime, that is what's called..."what we need in life as opposed to what we want...

    hummmm...I know it so well..

I'd rather not settle...for me life is a roller-coaster not a merry go round...

  • i love the ending but its so sad. i always tear up when watching it.

  • Yes, I do too. :(

When Mirabelle and Jeremy are talking, and she sees Ray enter the gallery with his new girlfriend, you can see that Ray and Mirabelle still have feelings for each other. The final scene really shows that they will always love each other even though their relationship is over. He finally told her what she knew all along, that he did love her, but it was too late.

  • i dunno i liked mirabelle with jeremy more. at least he didnt cheat one her like she cheated on him

  • Mirabelle didn't "cheat" on Jeremy. She just went on two dates with him, then she met Steve Martin after the second date. It wasn't until after her second date with Martin, THEN she called Jeremy to tell she was seeing someone else. I would hardly call that "cheating".

Some people like Ray, some people like Jeremy. To each their own. I have even read some things on the internet that say she shouldn't have gone with either one.

  • Esse filme e maravinhoso.Claire Danes esta perfeita,linda e muito fofa.Ela é demais.
