  • Genius ✰✰✰

  • the sweetest movie ever

  • I'm a pretty tough customer, but the day I don't cry watching the ending of City Lights is the day I die.

  • I've seen it 5 times in the last 15 minutes and the five times i've cried...

  • probably THE GREATEST LOVE SCENE IN WORLD CINEMA!!!

  • Orson Welles' favorite movie

  • Shit! I've never cried watching a film until now

  • @CKDindustry

    It's just that powerful

  • WT symphony is playing this masterpiece, a live cinema performance in El paso and Canyon Texas!

it's great experience to be playing the music along with this movie, life changing.

  • Every time I watch this I cry. Classic.

  • charlie could have done a little better job editing. with the camera behind him, his right hand is lowered from his face; and, with the camera in front of him, his hand is up to his mouth.

  • esta fue la primera pelicula de Chaplin que ví...solo tenia 8 años y hasta ahora lloro con esta escena.

  • Certainly, one of the greatest scenes in movie history.

  • i can never watch this without having Tears in my Eyes...it´s so Pure,Beautyfull .more than Words ever could say.Definetley Top 3 of All Time!!!Thank you,Charlie!

  • Chaplin was a true genius.

  • 13 people have cement running through their veins!!!

  • Beautiful.

  • Listed as one of the best movie endings of all time.

  • too bad the silent era is over!!! and most of all...too bad young people like me don't watch this kind of stuff any more..in stead they watch "twilight"!!

  • Tears are rolling down my cheeks.

  • In the context of the film, arguably the best ending ever. Once the former blind, oppressed and poor girl realizes that her supposed millionaire benefactor who restored her sight is in reality a poor tramp, she is caught between two worlds. The haves and the have nots. When she answers Charlie's question and says "yes I can see now" she is not just referring to her restored physical sight but, acknowledging the insurmountable divide between them. Heartbreaking moment.

  • ajudar o proximo sem esperar nada por isso. ajjudar que necessita quando vc tem muito menos a oferecer.

  • You need a heart of stone and balls of steel not to cry.

  • When I saw this in a theater, some asshole felt that he had to narrate the whole damn movie and personally ruined it for me. Thankfully, he got the message to shut up for this one scene.

  • Straordinario . Il più bel film della storia del cinema secondo me e non si offendano i seguaci di orson welles: chaplin non aveva nemmeno il sonoro...

  • I think this might be the best ending to a movie ever.

  • I think this might be the best ending to a movie ever.

  • i find that the smile on charlie chaplin's face is quite sad, i dunno why

  • Fucking shit who dislike this vid

  • Best movie ending ever

  • Holy crap, never seen the movie before, but this ending had me choked up...I still am choked, LOL.

  • All right!!! Who are the 12 idiots who disliked this wonderful vid!?!?! >:(

  • Masterpiece.

This many years later, it remains unsurpassed.

  • my all time favourite movie climax. charlie is a genius.till more than 100 movies released in various languages copying this movie. great is not the apt word

  • Chaplin actually did over 300 takes of that last huge grin before the movie faded out just to get the perfect bittersweet smile for that shot, that just shows dedication that most actors lack today.

  • wow talk about socially awkward

  • I am really surprised for a com'dy actor in this scence. He's great! Who can make it better?

  • I just watched this movie yesterday. It's something touching that lasts forever to make this film a classic.

  • this is such a wonderful movie, and chaplin is the best actor ever

  • Beautiful.

  • i just saw this at the cinema. wow what an experience. i recommend anyone to see one of his movies on the big screen. it truly is an great cinematic experience.

  • @foxpawz WHAT CINEMA?!?!?!?!?!??! WHERE DO U LIVEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • God I cry evertime I see this. Best movie ever.

  • Excellent ending to an amazing silent film!!!!!

  • God, the recognition, then the pity...so hard to watch, so important to see...

  • Uno dei pochissimi film che mi ha fatto piangere

  • Wow. The ending made me cry. Most romantic movie ending ever.

  • one of the greatest movie ever made. it is surprising that for a person on this new generation not used to watching these kind film, i cried

  • Unbelievable that these two actors couldn't like each other. They play so well. My fav. movie...

  • What a beautiful movie!! Nothing can compare. I love this movie!

  • @CAPNMRVL - Absolutely right, no ambiguity at all. The sacrifices this man must have made for me. All of his endings were happy and offered hope. City Lights and The Gold Rush remain two of the finest films ever made.

  • One of the best silent films I have ever seen :D

  • "Contains Content From: The New York Times"

    Wat?

  • 終わりの場面は最高の考え The end scene is the best idea

  • Charlie Chaplin gave hope to the world in a time when it had none.

  • @glimb393 and continues to do so. He's message transcends time

  • I don't remember how many times I saw this movie but it still makes me cry at this scene ! He knew how to make people laugh and cry at the same time.

  • I love his look at 0:58. as a film major this film changed my life.

  • the most tearful scene ive ever seen i cry everytime watching it even while i'm typing this.

  • So simple, beautiful and restrained. The truest story is so fully told the simplest way possible. Sheer artistry at its peak. So lovely.

  • Preciosa escena!!! Una de las mejores que haya visto...

  • A chaque fois boulversifiant

  • Who could possibly dislike this scene? Yet a few people have given it the thumbs down. Sad.

  • Gosh, this scene gets to me. I love it.

  • Seeing this clip -- its sheer artistry and brilliance -- is proof positive that God exists. It also angers me that such an incredible genius as Chaplin could have been treated with such malice by the government of the United States. He was, simply stated, the greatest cinematic artist of all time.

  • fsantais: VC's character is confused when she recognizes his feel by touch, but after he asks, "You can see now?" her expression lifts with her reply, clutching his hand to her; her heart wells up with love. She was blind before and never SAW the tramp, since he had been in jail during her eye operation and the opening of her shop. For all she knew, he could have been rich before and given up everything for love for her. Since the end has CC grinning, it tells that VC has accepted him as is.

  • Great great Chaplin. One the best scene of all time.

@fsantais Am i wrong or you didn't fully understand the line "Yes, i can see now"

  • She is simply beautiful!

He is the best tramp ever!

    What a movie!!!

  • She's got lovely eyes like my ex-girlfriend, I miss her.

  • One of my all time fav. movies! In my top 10!

  • a magnificent example of how to convey such profound emotion without the use of dialogue.

  • julia roberts and dick gere can go shag some sheep.

what you see here..THIS is how you shoot a romantic comedy.

  • The first time I saw this I have no words to express how deeply it affected me. Still does, he was such a genius. No one like him ever.

  • probably the best film of all time

  • Oh my .. This brings back memories from my Chaplin loving days .. And I'm only 16 haha :D

  • Words were pretty disposable in silent films, so it's sort of ironic that maybe the best line of all time ("Yes, I can see now") occurs in a silent film. What a great movie.

  • This scene always drives me to tears.

  • amazing u matchable !!!!

i read he never laughed much in his life

  • les larmes aux yeux

  • Sad, that is the life

  • Good thing we have YouTube. I've watched the film and the DVD stopped working a couple of minutes before the end. Terrible! :)

  • No words to describe what was made with no words... When i watch this, my heart believes sincerely that a heaven must exist beyond this ugly world.

  • Whew. This is more wonderful than I remembered. Powerful.

  • Love it. ... . Tory from Austin Texas. Singer songwriter musician. Check out my originals and subscribe if you like. Please listen to my own original .. The Little Tramp..a tribute to Charlie Chaplin. Namaste

  • Chaplin was to movies as Shakespeare was to literature. City Lights was one of the greatest movies ever made. To those who have commented before myself, I totally agree with most of you.

  • Best of Charlie Chaplin!

  • the greatest movie ever!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If you were to spend your entire life trying to come up with a more touching or memorable ending to a movie than this one, you could never come close. True artistry and brilliance at it very best.

  • the actress is soo beautiful! Great scene btw :)

  • This movie is better than almost any of the movies I've seen in the past decade.

And this ending is by far the best in film history.

  • Pq as imagens pb de antigamente parecem + digitais que hj?

  • Fantástico, simplesmente um Gênio.

  • just one word: genius.

  • i just weep & weep & weep before such infinite beauty!

  • splendid eternal masterpiece!

    what a scene!

words fall short to describe such splendor only created by the genius charlie chaplin!

  • This scene makes me cry

  • yes tears are only things that deserve this extreme beauty!

  • Everybody in this ugly world should see this wonderful movie :)

  • thanks again...i'm savoring this, as it seems all of my favorites are getting deleted by youtube; hopefully this will still be here in months/years to come.

  • I can never get through this scene without a few tears. So perfect :)

  • Charlie Chaplin has been my favorit actor. and this move one of the best, well it is not easy to say because all of them are real good, but this one... no words.

  • this ending chokes me up every time; thank you so much for posting.

  • what fantastic scene is this... mainly at the early moments..

when he first see her... and she had not recognised him yet

it is terrific... and the song... is marvelous..

  • who composed the score was it Chaplin or whm

  • The score was composed by Chaplin, one of the most versatile artist all time.

  • wonderfull ending to a great film.........

  • I am about to cry

Still, I choke up every time watching this ending

  • I´m the same...

  • this is such a sad movie!! stupid little boys pickin on him.

i would love you charlieee. ^^ favorite charlie chaplin movie

  • Pure sublimity.

  • Notice the way he kicks with his foot in the start. It's Phenonomal Funny!

  • so beautiful :)

  • he should tap that ass

  • 1931Charlie Chaplin's "City Lights" premieres at LosAngelesTheater.Films today lack this skill:ACTING. He was a great director too!!

  • I've seen aliens.

  • Will I ever be able to watch this scene without shedding a tear? My favorite movie ever.

  • @veronicles: I feel the same.

I even cry when I tell the scene

  • my balls are Huge , but i cant stop crying , ,Genius

  • Superb! Magnificent! The only people who don't think this is the greatest movie ending ever are people who haven't seen it.

  • I've seen it and do not think it is but agree to disagree I guess.

  • I really, really want to believe that they rode off into the sunset, got married, had lots of kids and happily ever after and all that, but realistically I know that the Tramp probably got nothing more than several meals of hot soup, and maybe some bread.

And that makes me want to cry more.

  • Think of these other films: Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Spartacus, West Side Story , Butch Cassidy, The Godfather, Schindler's List, and even Star Wars. They had sad endings. Now think of most films, in which the guy and girl get together in the end......notice a pattern? Great stories often have a sad ending.

  • Yeah... I guess, and the fact that the film doesn't really say what happens afterwards and leaving it up to the audience to decide is very clever.

BTW...Star Wars? Didn't they all get drunk in front of a bonfire (OK with Skywalker pere's corpse on top or something) at the end?

  • no cgi, no fx and a couple of continuity errors and still this remains the most perfect scene ever put on film

    take that james cameron

  • look at it in perspective. Chaplin was a pioneer of film techniques at the time of "City Lights". The number of films that had been made by 1931 were very few compared to today. A story like this was still pretty original. Today, James Cameron is probably an even bigger pioneer in film techniques with respect to what is already available at the time of(terminator, abyss, avatar). The difference is that the stories he creates must be compared to all of the movies that have been made up to this point

  • its such a wonderful ending,,,i love how he looks at her with that flower in his hand,,,

  • tears everytime I see it

  • Everytime I see this, I have to cry again...

  • Beyond words, sooooo AWSOME

  • My favourite movie scene ever...

  • Doesn't get much better than this.

    Thanks for sharing .

  • Yup. Too bad he didn't have MONEY...... Jeez, women can be so crass.

  • Probably one of the most moving and ambiguous final scenes in the history of cinema... Does Virginia Cherill's character cry because she recognizes her loving prince she has never really stopped waiting for or because she realizes the benefactor who enlightened her life as a blind was only the poor little tramp she's now able to "see"?

  • Because a man who basicly got nothing and yet got so much to give (Love)

Chaplin simply sacrifice himself to her because he love her so much, he goes to jail and lose all his money he just got from the rich drunk.

When he ask "Can you see now" He means if she can see with her eye's, but she answer him on another question which kinda lies in the first, "Yes, i can see now" She see's how great his love to her is, that he sacrificed himself, so wonderful and magical is the nature of the tramp.

  • @fsantais the second one i think... she is disappointed

  • @fsantais i guess the last one

  • @fsantais - It`s not ambiguous at all. Virginia knows what it is like to be just as poor and helpless which is why she offers the flower and money. Then when she finds out who he is, she takes his hand and presses it to her heart meaning she has accepted him and will help him as he did her. Chaplin did this to show that the duality of love and fear can interchange at any moment based on our experiences . Paris Hilton would tell him to fuck off, but someone like Virginia can see love and not fear

  • @JamesTKirkCobain It may not be ambiguous to you, but it is to me and a lot of other people.

  • @fsantais - Also notice Chaplin has the flower by his mouth and nose....Again duality...Eat the flower or smell it...Choose to see beauty or ugliness, love or fear. Orson Welles once said this film was the greatest movie ever made and I agree with him 1000%. It`s just pure art . The entire movie goes through every spectrum of humanity and it really pisses me off how it`s always been ignored.

  • @JamesTKirkCobain Ignored by whom?

  • @fsantais - Also a big reason Chaplin made this movie was because of the depression. He wanted to tell people that although life is tough, money is not where the beauty of life lies but within ourselves, and he followed what he preached....He lived extremely modest his entire life. I mean single room apartment modest,

  • @fsantais She recognises him from his hand. She really does "see".

  • In my opinion, the geniality of Chaplin is that leaves open all the posibilities of that final scene, and so the imagination continues working...and each one has its own final.

  • @fsantais - Your second point. She recognizes the touch of the hand that gave her money so often, and realizes what he must have sacrificed for her.

  • omg... tears... tears! the worlds greatest ending, scene, and man.

  • Deepest, most spectacular love scene in cinema history.

  • The best ending of any movie I've seen.

  • I 'm just weeping over here . So beautiful.

  • made me cry!! excellent!! genius Chaplin!! will live forever within us!!

  • 人生は残酷や

  • No matter how many times I watch this movie, I always end up crying at these scene.

  • MAGNIFIQUE....

  • and this kind of beauty can only be done once and by one person only namely charlie chaplin THE GREAT.

  • this is the very beauty.

  • Piercingly beautiful scene. I love the way he turns back and smiles at her as she gives him the flower.

    Such intense, yet gentle emotion.

  • A Masterpiece of cinema.

  • Uma das cenas mais lindas do cinema.Chaplin;O Homem que nos fazia rir e chorar ao mesmo tempo...meu maior ídolo.ETERNAMENTE,Chaplin!

  • the most intense movie scene ever!

  • chaplin is genious!

that character will be loved forever
