If NYC is replacing signs anyways, it is only prudent of them to adopt a smart new standard.
The US Department of transportation (which forced through the new rules through the Federal Highway Administration) has stoppeed the lower-case mandate- for now. But it could be renewed next year so those who like our current UPPER-CASE STREET SIGNS HAD BETTER SPEAK UP AGAINST GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE!
I hate the mixed case street sign BS. All caps are much easier to read. I just hope the mixed cased plague doesn't hit other signs like stop signs and speed limit signs. I also hate clearview, a lot. It looks way too artistic.

It seems like the trend toward Humanist San-Serifs just doesn't want to end that I'm already yearning for the past. But look out on eBay soon for your chance. Be aware that there are also brown historical signs denoting the historic district and the black Financial District signs, as well as celebrity renamed signs. (NYC 2000, Duke Ellington, etc.) Hopefully the serif blue lowercase signs in parts of Midtown won't get removed (I like those signs and wish they used those instead of Cloudview).

Or the older hump signs with the cross street in smaller caps above the main sign used from the 1920s to the early 60s? Another part of my old NYC gone, and soon with it the Crown Victoria taxis. Those curvy lowercase Ls on the Wall St. signs are surely going to become a familar sight, and to me it represents Neonazism of being foolish (the fonts inspiration).

WHILE ACTUALLY LARGE LETTERS IN TERMS OF FONT, MAKING IT RED, AND ALL CAPS DENOTES SERIOUSNESS SO THE "ELITE" USER DOESNT GET CALLED OUT ON THE GENERAL FORCED MARCH OF THE CONSENSUS OF NONSENSE. this is not so bad. signs would be easier and faster to read, even at night, when i'm driving around in nyc at night, it is pretty hard to see the street sign at night. this is not a bad idea.

Unbelievably lame. Especially since the first sign was easier to read. (Take away the little flippies on the lower case l's and t's at least! That's part of what makes the new signs harder to read! somebody had lunch with somebody, promises were made, money exchanged hands..and now one of the somebodies is making millions, I personally think its hundreds of millions, since installation is not included in that ridiculous price.
I say allow small logo on the corner of each and have the companies pay for the ad space..that will take care of cost and generate cash for the road works.

A quarter-billion dollars of tax money wasted on changing to lower-case letters, what a crock of SHIT (and I say this as a typically polite person!). This stuff just ticks me off, I don't even live in NYC but what a colossal waste. Personally I think the full-caps are easier to read also but that's just me, I wish they had them like that everywhere.
