I don't is nothing wrong with this recording. Leontyne and Tebaldi are the only what pronounced on the high B grido -all letters-. Neither Nilsson nor Borhk or any other Turandot does that . Anyway I think she would have been a good Turandot if her had deepened in the role.
This is definitely not a work that Ms. Price should want to be remembered by as her voice is strained, to say the least, to accomplish the vocal requirements for this aria alone. I agree with other comments: voice not big enough nor steely enough for the role.
Only Birgit Nilson mastered this role in my humble view. Ms. Price understood the vocal requirements and proceeded accordingly with respect. Let this recording of the aria stand as a tribute to Turandot.
MI SPIACE MA QUI LA PRICE NON MI PIACE...LEI E' VERDIANA...PUCCINI NON FA PER LEI...TURANDOT LASCIAMOLA ALLA NILSSON!!!!! LA PRICE E MERAVIGLIOSA COME LIU'...
The high tessirura makes her tiredm and also make me tired if I listen her. There is nothing in Price's personallity, taht makes Turandot. No passion like this, not crudel, not tough.
Es increíble escuchar a esta gran soprano cantar In questa reggia, cuando unas de sus arias más fuertes son Signore Ascolta y Tu che di gel sei cinta...
As much as I admire Ms. Price as a great artist, I feel like this role is not easily suited to her wonderful vocal gifts. She is sorely taxed in the high sustained notes due to the need for a more steely- voiced soprano.
i'm a big leontyne price fan!....but let's face it!... if someone else had sung this aria this way!...they would've been torn apart!....price is No turandot!..even as a recital piece, it doesn't fit!...i find sutherland to be even more of a turandot than miss price!!!... again i say!... I"M A HUGE PRICE FAN!...in her element, she cannot be surpased!!... price aproaches everything from a lyric soprano and turandot is hardly lyric
I dont think this is as good as the Thaiis aria on art of the Prima Donna-she seems to be singing on the lower edge if the pitch---her interruptation is pure Price and brilliant as always---but once is enough
@Dtenor87 Naw. i just am not feeling it. I love Price! She is one of the people that I have always looked up to as an African American in the Opera/ Classical music world. There is an element of sheer cutting edge power that I am missing from this aria. It's beautiful but it's not what I like in a Turandot.
What a PLEASURE it is to hear this aria done justice by someone who could sing it! Leontyne Price renders it an otherworldly regal magnificence. This is beautiful.
this is quite good, but as pointed out, it's a studio recording. heck, even battle with that tiny voice could record it with the right microphone. price's voice wasn't tiny but she was far from being a dramatic.
A bit strange to hear She who called herself a lyric soprano singing that aria. This is happily only the aria. Is it from the seventies or the eighties?
I tell you...Mother Price just had this way of keeping the cat in the bag, and then blasting all of our preconceptions about what she could and could not do. Most folks wouldn't give her the time of day singing this aria, but she manages to sell this product extremely well! I can only admire such an amazing artist...Fearless...just how I like my Leontyne Price.
Price may not have been a dramatic soprano, but this is nonetheless beautifully sung and to my ears is preferable to some of the versions by Gwyneth Jones, Luana Devol and Eva Marton. Sometimes vocal stereotyping can prejudice appreciation.
I think that this version is a good coming from mrs. price. She only come second to Birgit Nilsson and Joan Sutherland. They better than Luana devol, Eva Tuner, Eva Marton And Gweneth Jones and all of the m are great .
I really love Leontyne Price, and like her openness to a very big part of the soprano repertoire. But I think it is very wise she never performed this role on stage.
I prefer her in the roles she was really good at, like Liu! She sang it for example besides a very powerful and then still quite lyrical Birgit Nilsson as Turandot, a great duo!
Personalmente io ADORO Miss Price.. ma non la reputo adatta all'impervio ruolo della Principessa.. cosa che credo abbia saputo anche lei in quanto non penso l'abbia mai cantata in recita.
daniele barioni is just amazing i have the recording of npon piangere liu where he sing the last high b(turandot turandot turandot) for something like 20 seconds live
OMG, I have listened to this for 20 years or more and I know exactly what you mean.
It is like a liquid, no?
Lou-ling
Mike is too close though. Piccolo out of tune or flute.
I have a better version of her, but still nice to see fans. Not so much into note perfection, but her voice is so great. she really needs a Pavorotti or Caruso to back her up. Opera was so great up until the 90's.
The fantastic Miss Leontyne Price! I should point out, however, that this is not live. All of the Prima Donna albums were studio recordings. This is from Vol. 4. I love the risks she took in the studio, recording things she wouldn't do onstage. Fabulous!
Leontyne sang this live??? When? I ha dno idea she did this I thought she has only recorded it for the Prima Donna album. When is this performance. I have to say I think she does a much better job than I ever thought she would. There is only one awkward moment around 3:52-55. The rest is superb.
She never did do this live. It's from the Prima Donna album. As much as I love la Price, I have to say that I don't think this particular aria shows her at her best. She never had a small voice, but she seems just a tad out of her fach to my ears.
Interestingly, this aria was on her early recital programs, in 1959, and she apparently tore the place up. See Paul Hume's review in W. Post. She never sang the role of Turandot in the opera house.
Her low notes are not too beautiful - cloudy.

You know, she has such power and brunt behind her voice, yet such clarity and ring to her top notes. A benchmark Turandot.

Why is this not suited for her voice? I never studied classical or vocal. But I like listening to her. I hear there are different types of Sopranos

Total Madness, her interpretation is amazing, if you understand the role you would see why its one of the best...

"Е quella morte" is simply a scream. Most of the time, although she has all the dramatic force needed she sounds as if she was singing "Somertime".
No, Pryce is NOT Turandot
The finale is terrible. The tenor should have been shot dead right after his terrible "Una e la vita"

While I think this is sung very beautifully it's missing the hard, cold, steeliness that Turandot should have. Otherwise this is sung beautifully.
