ANNMAl also contains aluminium powder, therefore balanced:

NH4NO3 + CH3NO2 + Al ----->

Both can be oxygen balanced to produce more or less the same results, and if the metal powder is identical, then flash will be similar if not identical

Can be if you want it to be. Depending on the ratio and density, ammonal can have more power than ANNMAl. An explosive with low density in less powerful due to decreased DV. Gas evolution is dependant on ratio, which consequently can have significant effect on the power.

Any oxidizer will increase the effectiveness of any explosive. Black smokes comes if the explosive has not enough oxygen to fully decompose at high velocity. It simply ignites like anything organic. Then bigger the charge, then more obvious it is. Take a look at the US nuke imitation, a large fireball is created only because a part TNT was lacking in oxygen. Thats why oxidizers are used. If this guy got its explosives form WW2 shells then this could be TNT+oxidizer. Sorry for my bad English.
