  • so so good - why is lou such an ass... quine was so good for him. now he produces crap with metallica - rip quine... - such a shame lou believed he was a poet and got rid of quine... he bought lou back from the dead -

  • @nezbleu stfu

  • love the solo

  • Quine's got a Hunter S Thompson look going on.

  • 1 person doesn't like waves of fear roiling over him

  • Some drugs are not good for you!

    Stick to ethanol!

  • Sup with those shades, Robert Quine? Good stuff. Thanks for posting.

  • A panic attack in musical form...painfully beautiful and cathartic to hear.

  • I KNOW WHERE I MUST BE, I MUST BE IN HELL!

    Lou Reed = GOD

  • In terms of his solo career... this is the height! What a great fucking band. Lou was on fire too.

  • always thought Doane Perry's drumming clinic on "Blue mask" made this song

  • What a great solo by Quine!!!

  • .

the most honest song I've ever heard......

  • I came here thinking if I watched a video I would know how Quine played that solo but I'm more mystified than ever

  • @ultramouse i know what you mean, this is the perfect solo for this song, i am crawling around on the ground looking for some pill, i dont know what to do with myself, oh fuck

  • Yeah, quine plays that slightly out of tune solo..but knows just how far to push it...even though he's a serious guitarplayer...funny to watch those '90's indie kids tryin to rip him off and others from that era....

  • kingbiscuit9, I agree completely. Quine should have been much, much higher. Sad he died the way he did.. BTW, his uncle was one of the great American philosophers, definitely one of the top ten, maybe top five, Willard Van Orman Quine.. God I love his solo on this, as if the guitar were paralyzed by . . . well, fear.

  • The Blue Mask is not an easy listen. It is a masterpiece. And one of the reasons it is a masterpiece is the guitar work of Robert Quine. The only way to listen to this is LOUD. Thanks for posting.

  • A few years ago Robert Quine was voted 80th of the top 100 rock guitarists - I would have quite a few notches higher

  • Robert Quine was a guitar genius!

  • So sad I didn't know Robert Quine died in 2004.

  • when i heard quines solo- i went to rehab....

  • Robert Quine was an astounding guitarist, and this is probably one of the top guitar solos of all time. Fits the song perfectly.

  • hay un sujeto al final de la cancion que sacude sus brazos emocionado de una manera extraordinaria.

  • I have this concert on VHS from the '80s. It remains perhaps my fave concert recording.I was already a Robert Quine fan via The Voidoids, but his playing here instantly made him one of my fave guitarists! What a shame he,despondent over death of his wife, committed suicide via a reportedly deliberate heroin OD.Did the solo recordings he was working on ever see light of day?As long as we have recordings like this, Quine ,lives on!

Another Lou song proving Lou's reigning Poet Laureate of drugs(+)!

  • Robert Quine's guitar ought to be able to press charges for the crimes he commits against it (but he's such a brilliant criminal, he'd be let off). :)

  • @ribotaddict I don't know where you are, but "Live in Italy" was a double-record import into the US. It is not bad. It _does_ have Quine, but not as much as one would want. And despite what many say, "Rock 'n' Roll Animal" is better. I like Quine more than Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner, but they really make that album. Look what it says about Reed: every good player he's had has run screaming for the exit. From what I can tell, he is not a nice guy. Not hard to work with; hard to _be_ with.

  • wow this band was tight. lou is laughing at the opening bass lines

  • @ribotaddict It is sad that Quine is gone. It is also sad that there is so little of him left to listen to. Even with Reed, he's almost mixed out of "Legendary Hearts" and he doesn't get nearly enough quality time on "Live in Italy".

Having said all of this, I think that Quine's greatness has caused people to under-appreciate the exceptional work of the living Ivan Julian. Just think of the opening lick of "Blank Generation." Or search YouTube for him.

  • Thanks for this!!!

  • Ah ROBERT QUINE !!!! why did you die !!! I miss you !

  • @ribotaddict The word is he was depressed about the death of his wife and so he intentionally ODed on heroin. I believe this is wrong. Quine was not known for being a big heroin users (as opposed to Rich Hell; BTW: Reed was never much of a heroin user, but he seems to have been doing a lot of speed at least through Berlin and Sally Can't Dance). I think Quine was depressed and just screwed up. It's sad any way you look at. Maybe Reed could go back remix Legendary Hearts so we can hear Quine!

  • @otherwiseniceguys i baught all the albums of richard hell and vodoids, and i found there nice stuff, and also his work with zorn and marc ribot...i do not know this 'live in italy'...about reed, i think he is involved in his own things now..i am afraid he will not go backward...sorry for awful english

  • @ribotaddict They the Voidoids albums are really good. The second album is not out on CD now and so it costs a fortune used. I used to own it, but I'm not willing to shell out a bunch of money to buy it again. The Live in Italy is disappointing for a number of reasons. What I was mostly talking about, though, was that Reed didn't let Quine take many solos. It's really sad. I think Reed is a great songwriter at times, but he is _always_ a bad singer and guitar player!

  • I know this is not Doane Perry on drums. Is it Fred Maher? It looks like him. It is definitely Saunders on bass, and of course, as the title states, Quine on the guitar. It's a hell of a band; too bad Reed has to be there. His guitar playing would charitably be called bad. As usual, his live vocals suck; the album performance is far better, but hardly good. Oh, where is talented young man who sang most of "Loaded"?

Fred Maher? Yes? No? If not, who?

  • @otherwiseniceguys it's definitely Fred Maher

  • @rakidip Thanks! They work together very well, although I wasn't too thrilled with the album they did together. One thing I find now listening to "Blue Mask" is that Sauders' bass over-powers the sound. Live it is so much better (softer). Just the same, I think the music would work better with Richard Hell on bass (who was a surprisingly good bassist). It isn't just the fretless bass; it is the way he plays. You don't hear Michael Been sliding all around on the fretboard like that.

  • i love this song. thanks
