Today we have a system, in most countries, where regulations protect the rich on behalf of the poor. When that happened, it's called corporatism or mercantilism, not capitalism. If these protective barriers were removed, the corporations would be threatened by competition in their industry. @ihatekhomeini Well, the military falls outside the realm of our economy, and it will remain that way. That is an explicit power granted to the federal government. The existence of policemen and law enforcement, being a state issue, is ultimately up to the people to decide who provides law enforcement. But I don't think the people would allow the privatization of our military, nor does the Constitution permit it.

In fact in the capitalist system military comes farther in defense techknowledgy, and Police function more effitiently because they have a shorter list of rules that can be broken. Things that could make a profit would be set up to do so, and not illegalized because a portion of society disagrees with it. In a socialist society many laws make criminals of otherwise law abiding citizens, and that is wrong.
@ThesisOfRock I would still call the US capitalist, because the regulations and institutions all favor capital. If a worker looses his job (in essence going bankrupt) nothing is done, if finance and capital is disrupted they are bailed out. To me that's what a free market will eventually turn into if it is ever achieved, because big corporations will never accept free competition, and use whatever necessary to hinder it. If all fails they will turn to tyranny.

The govt shouldn't be permitted to give bailouts. If these companies are failing, it's a good indicator that their goods and services are inferior. For free market capitalism to work, it is ultimately up to the consumers and the people to make sure government and corporations remain separate entities.

There are no companies deemed "to big to fail" I think what you're probably more opposed to is the thought that there are no individuals "too small to fail" right along with it. They come together to lower their taxes at the end of the year and become more powerful then they were before. @Yavor54 actually, the reason more conservatives drop out of high school is that they often take classes that require more academic prowess (mathematics, science, etc) because they often have family pressure to succeed in life. liberals take more abstract classes where there is a less concrete sense of correct/incorrect and are more so opinion based (art, theater, revisionist history, cultures). @DrewDubious Unity doesn't encourage people to better themselves, competition does. Monopolies (unified control of an industry or product) universally cause an increase in cost and decrease in quality.
That's not to say you can't spend your money to feed someone else if you so desire, but socialism is taking my money without my consent to give it to someone else.

The government is bailing out banks that should be allowed to fail, putting undue controls on health-care so that the government plan is all that is left, and extending unemployment so that those that aren't working still get paid are all socialist. Taxpayers still pay those bills. Money doesn't grow on trees.

American Liberalism takes advantage of the worst in human nature. It argues redistributionist theories that take advantage of the envy the poor have for the rich. It argues for more restriction and regulation that end up being barriers to entry into industry, delaying innovation and lowering quality of life for all. I love it when people who don't understand evolution, or don't know anything about biology start talking about "survival of the fittest." Empathy and cooperation is among the most important developments in nature due to natural selection; those that cooperate stand a bigger chance to survive than those that do not. The whole 'you can't be liberal and believe in evolution' argument is bogus anyway, because if the people who used it actually knew anything about evolution, they'd know that altruism is a trait shared by all primates, us included. Why would we want to kill off a poorer populace anyway, what would that say about us?

If you want modern examples, look to Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae, govt takeover of the banks, Obamacare, etc. History shows it's crystal clear that corporatism and mercantilism have been the direct result of increased market regulation lobbied by corporations.

Since then there have been massive tax cuts for the top 1% of the US population (that in itself is a form of deregulation as it opens up for the wealthiest to start controlling the financial institutions), and the financial institutions have been deregulated. Yes there are regulations, but those regulations are the result, as you point out, what has been lobbied by corporations.

We still have things like the SEC and the Fair Labor Standards Act, the latter of which is the reason why a lot of poor people who do work have to work two or more jobs. If you want to say tax cuts are a form of deregulation, I can say tax increases for Social Security is a form of regulation. The most notorious of New Deal regulation is the Federal Reserve itself, printing money until we become like 1920's Weimar Republic

Today we have a system, in most countries, where regulations protect the rich on behalf of the poor. I think that is inherent in how capitalism develops, as corporations merge and create monopolies they get so much power that it is impossible for the state to be neutral. But the economy was much more regulated from new deal (30s) until the 70s.

When that happened, it's called corporatism or mercantilism, not capitalism. If these protective barriers were removed, the corporations would be threatened by competition in their industry. Power would then be returned to the people and workers. Regulations can't be part of the problem and be the solution at the same time.

However, I don't think a free market is possible since we will need a state in order to protect ourselves (any nation needs police and military), and state is reduced to that level the corporations will slowly take over police and military by lobby and propaganda. The people will be reduced to slaves of financial institutions. We can't get away from regulations.

@ihatekhomeini Well, the military falls outside the realm of our economy, and it will remain that way. That is an explicit power granted to the federal government. The existence of policemen and law enforcement, being a state issue, is ultimately up to the people to decide who provides law enforcement. But I don't think the people would allow the privatization of our military, nor does the Constitution permit it.

In fact in the capitalist system military comes farther in defense techknowledgy, and Police function more effitiently because they have a shorter list of rules that can be broken. Things that could make a profit would be set up to do so, and not illegalized because a portion of society disagrees with it. In a socialist society many laws make criminals of otherwise law abiding citizens, and that is wrong.

If a worker looses his job (in essence going bankrupt) nothing is done, if finance and capital is disrupted they are bailed out. To me that's what a free market will eventually turn into if it is ever achieved, because big corporations will never accept free competition, and use whatever necessary to hinder it. If all fails they will turn to tyranny.

The govt shouldn't be permitted to give bailouts. If these companies are failing, it's a good indicator that their goods and services are inferior. For free market capitalism to work, it is ultimately up to the consumers and the people to make sure government and corporations remain separate entities.

There are no companies deemed "to big to fail" I think what you're probably more opposed to is the thought that there are no individuals "too small to fail" right along with it. They come together to lower their taxes at the end of the year and become more powerful then they were before. In the mostly capitalist society we had before the new deal (horrible idea that was..) companies competed and therefore didn't merge.
