It's very clear to see that DuMont was his comic foil; however, in her later years, DuMont said she "never got the comedy of Marx." She could not understand what was so funny about Marx; however, we understand don't we? "Hold me close, closer, closer. If I hold you any closer, I'll be behind you." Classic stuff.

saying ahead of his time would not be correct. the phrase is silly and frankly doesn't make sense. people exist in their own time and what makes a performer special is that they capture a piece of the human experience whether it's through music or humor or art or sport. Timeless was Mr. Marx, ahead of his time no. it is comforting to see individuals of other generations who are such representations of the timeless, tasteful, human being

I think that the reason Margaret Dumont didn't crack up in every scene is because she really didn't get Groucho's comedic genius. In fact, Charlotte Chandler speaks of this in her book on Groucho.
