You have a great voice for this kind of presentation...very clear and well spoken. Hmmm...you could be a DJ or a training speaker(kind of like what your doing here). Ever thought of doing a formal training series?
@GaragebandandBeyond say you have speakers monitors plugged into you audio interface will you only hear the stuff you record or everything from your Mac
@GaragebandandBeyond at first, i'm not a miss, im mister, :P. so if i have an interface with 3 slots, what model would you recommend? and so, the 1 USB mic is also in a different channel?
hey man!!! i found the zoom r16 (300 euros) there you can record 8 tracks ( seperate at the same time) via usb!!! maybe you could check that out??? you can also use it as a controller or a stand alone recorder ( battery powered)
Unless you have a Zoom R24 or R16 then you have all the tracks separated on separate tracks and that is very handy and as well as being a pc interface you can mix with it as well. So do you need a mixer? well no, because as you pointed out one does not "need" a mixer to record, but having 16 track simultaneous recording is nice indeed.
so, how can i record a drum track with separate channels? do i need an interface with 10 or 12 inputs? cuz io have the tc electronics desktop konnekt 6 with only 2 inputs and i'm going to start recording drums hopefully.
How do I set something to where it records multiple channels into the computer? To where I could eq the snare, toms, overheads, bass drum, etc. seperately?
i dont know what he is talking about i have a usb mixer and a firewire mixer i use for on the go live recordings and they both record 8 channels separately yea the pre amps arent great but for a live rig its perfect for higher end stuff i use my saffire pro 40
listen people, your home recording studio is based on what you want to sound like, like me for instance, im using my computer, a home made pop screeen i made out of a magnifying glass and a mad catz xbox360 mic, its ghetto as hell but its gets the job done xD xD xD
I now have a decent Home Studio setup at home for my bands and projects ect, I used to run a commercial studio in the 90`s as well. I would say that a mixer is pretty much essential in the long run, although not one as big as the ones that I used to use and also the fact that I am using the mixer in a different way than before, i.e I don`t mixdown on it anymore but use it as a very useful input management tool to send various sounds to my different computers
@WhoresOfBabylon to phantom power mics and also to be able to monitor everything from all the various computers etc before finially bouncing everything into one computer for mixdown into that, I could go into more detail but I`ll leave it there , a few hundred pounds or less spent on a small mixer is money well spent for anyone really unless you just make Electronica music and nothing else I guess.
lewin...thank you so much for your vidz. Your tutorials helped me to make my debut CD. In the past year (2011) i've learned so much from you. THANK YOU again! Keep up the great work.
so, i don't know if its still asked, bud i could use a in mixer, where all my mics get in, which has got direct outs, so that i can put em into a big size interface (maybe 8 inputs) and than in the computer, is that working and do you know what i mean? Greetings from Germany!
Great Vid man appreciated greatly, I wanted to ask you what kind of mic is inexpensive and sounds great? because you defitinitly convinced me not to buy mixers etc, because i use a cheap pc mic and surprisely with compressing and noise reduction its not to bad but doesnt sound you do now great, please help, thank you
I think that a mixer is necessary for someone (like me) who hasn't got lot of money to spend into a 8-track interface. Just that I bought a Focusrite Saffire 6, and with two channels your don't record a drummer. So even if it's not necessary, it can be really useful for "cheap" recordings ! (Especially with old 90's mixers your can find for 50€ and that sound really decent actually).
@FSBass So you're saying that you would recommend putting a Mackie mixer PreAmp before your Focusrite Preamp in the signal path? I would disagree. Why "soil" the signal? It depends on what kind of drums sounds you want. I often record drums with 2 mics and it sounds great! I have some videos up so you can hear what you can do with just 2 mics on drums.
@GaragebandandBeyond Because I was doing "live" recording for my band (we don't like to record track by track) so to get guitar + bass + drums we used an old Yamaha MC802 directly plugged via the mic input of my laptop (a Connexant SmartAudio HD with its preamp to 0dB).
I had to adapt the XLR outputs of the mixer to jack and then put a "mono 6.5 jack to stereo 3.5 jack" cable, so I think these "transformations" aren't better then getting my mixer via XLR in the Focusrite! :)
I have one question: How can I switch between my headphone amp, studio monitors and my PA speakers in my room? I know you made A video about an audio switch or something but that has only 2 outputs :S
LEWIN! i got a question, i sold my mic coz i couldnt solve this lol.
im using windows 7 with my usb microphone, and everytime i record, i experience a little bit or latency delay to the sound that i hear. especially when im listening to what im recording using a head phone.
dude.... how did you hest such a wicked audio sound? like its so crisp and solid. did you use compression or anything on this video? and what interface are you useing for the shure sm7b?
While I agree with you that you don't HAVE to have a mixer I find them very helpful. I leave everything in the studio hooked into it. I have a two input interface. I plug the left and right from the main mixer output to the two inputs. When I want something on channel one i pan hard left, hard right for channel two. I keep all the gains where I need them. It makes it much simpler for me that way. If it doesn't make it simpler for you then don't use one. Also good for an additional headphone mix.
Love your videos, Lewin. Because of your tutorials, I'll be releasing my first CD made by garageband. Your microphone referrals and mixing ideas were just what I needed to inspire me to forge ahead and FINALLY get my music out there. People always ask me after I perform, "Do you have a CD?" Now, I can finally say, "YES!" Love ya, dude. You're awesome!
Cant wait for the days when USB 3 audio interfaces: 1. Are on the market?. 2. Are affordable. Wonder what products M-Audio are gonna come out with. 16 or even 32 channels into my DAW please!
If you do need a mixer buy one of the firewire or newer usb units which deliver the channels seperately. Stereo outs are meant for recording live shows not studio work.
Rev.. Recordings are tinny if you use a quality interface.. The only thing I use a mixer for is drums.. I run 8 mics into a mixer, then take a stereo feed out into a channel on my ux8.. Everything else goes directly into the ux8 (via a snake).
Good vid man.. I'm actually getting ready to start a new channel similar to yours
Not at all!!! When I first constructed my first recording apparatus, I could never get rid of the tinny effect tht I was getting for my recordings - that is, without the use of a mixer. It's definitely been your how to's that totally made the difference. But I do recommend the use of a mixer; it completed got rid of the tinny effect, & made my stuff sound studio quality.
Don't misunderstand, dude - your advice cleaned my setup up incredibly, and thank you for that,
@GaragebandandBeyond ...and for the record, I follow your vids pretty closely to improve my own setup - I'd love to turn you loose in it to make improvements.
The issue is that buying an interface that handles all of the inputs for a set of drum mics can really be expensive. My mixer was 115$ and handles my set of 6 mics (2 pencil condensers, 1 snare, 1 kick, & 2 toms) very well. Of course the sound isnt the greatest as I can only EQ the overheads/kick & snare and the toms are plugged in through XLR-quarter inch cables. But It was cheap and sounds decent for the price. And on the plus side mixers can be used for other audio needs when you've upgraded!
@TheChrisC29 extra sound you dont need. if you have your headsets listening to the mix while being closer to say the crash your ear in your brain will freak out :)
Without a mixer - just putting a guitar and a mic thro' a Tapco link usb a/d converter - I end up with guitar on one channel, vocal on the other. I don't see any way to change their positions, using Garageband. Am I missing something ?
...I think that using a mixer depends on what you're recording and how. For some setups it's completely unnecessary, but for others it's a major advantage.
It all depends on what you're planning to record and of course budget.
...Also, there are now USB and firewire mixers that allow you to record many more than 2 channels. You can record an entire band if you want.
In some cases you can even play back more than 2 channels through a mixer. In my setup I play 16 channels from Logic and mix them on the desk and re-record them all. It may add a little noise but then I get to use real sliders and real analogue EQ.
I think you've been a little unfair to mixers here.
If you have a lot of outboard gear (e.g. synths) a mixer is a godsend even if it's to avoid plugging things in and out all the time.
Even if you just record 2 channels at a time you can still build up the track with MIDI and have everything going at once, that's pretty much impossible without a mixer.
@Mefistophelees That's what A/D interfaces are for bro. Unless you plan on manually mixing your tracks straight to ADAT or other tape device, external mixers are almost completely useless. I can record 18 inputs at a time without an external mixer. I'm not quite sure why anyone else would want to these days either. If I add another unit, I can have 36, etc... And, for a lot cheaper than I can buy and stack mixers.
If I had to gig with that many inputs, yeah .. mixer city, but otherwise...
Lewin ! Quick question ! Will you ever upgrade to Logic ?
I use Ezdrummer, just like you. The good thing is that i can ( in Logic ) use Ezdrummer as a multichannel plugin, so i can EQ the kick, snare etc. separately ! its awesome !
The best records (Hendrix, Clapton, etc.) were recorded like that. I watched an interview and the guy who recorded for Led Zeppelin said that now a days you have to many options in post production that you end up not knowing what to do and you over process. He said that it was good to have to take the decisions right on the spot. But who knows...
@trhnpc ya for drums if u want to get each drum tracked you'll need that preamp it had 8 preamps records 8 separate tracks to your DAW and u can also daisy chain 3 together so then you'll get 24 separate tracks if your doing a live gig or something
@trhnpc i am recording with the tascam us1641 and i like it! its an 14 channels interface. 8 mic inputs 2 line/guitar and 4 line inputs in the back. and midi I/O
Great video Lewin (I remember I use to be lost about this until I discovered you have a mixer in your DAW Lol).Hey Lewin, I have a off topic question:
What kind of headphones do you use for tracking (I'm trying to avoid metronome bleeds and other audio leaks)?
thats what i do, im wanting to get an interface where i can separate tracks, oh well, ill just use the live mixer till i get a nice interface, THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!!! Great advice!!

I use Ezdrummer, just like you. The good thing is that i can ( in Logic ) use Ezdrummer as a multichannel plugin, so i can EQ the kick, snare etc. separately ! its awesome !
@Mtcrazyguitar You may not want to do that. That would be like trying to connect a straw to a fire hydrant, unless you plan on using a USB 3.0 interface. And unfortunately it wouldn't give you the different channels either.
However... you should be able to purchase a fairly inexpensive FireWire 800 interface for your computer to solve your problem. That should do the trick. :-)
Like I could mix everything into one channel or plug multiple things in but only use one a time like using the monitors to listen to my computer, etc.
The only real use I found for a mixer in my studio, was that I can run everything out of the monitors that way. Even when I'm not recording or have my firewire plugged in, I could still listen to everything and play keyboard, etc. and hear it out of my monitors. If that made any sense hahaha
@Mrrhockstar It makes perfect sense. I used to do the same thing, but I eventually had one of those "duh" moments and bought a patch panel instead. Now I only keep a spare tiny Behringer MX802a mixer around for emergency phantom power for mics. The pre's suck, but it will do in a pinch and it's quiet enough.
You have a great voice for this kind of presentation...very clear and well spoken. Hmmm...you could be a DJ or a training speaker(kind of like what your doing here). Ever thought of doing a formal training series?

Lewin ! Quick question ! Will you ever upgrade to Logic ?
I use Ezdrummer, just like you. The good thing is that i can ( in Logic ) use Ezdrummer as a multichannel plugin, so i can EQ the kick, snare etc. separately ! its awesome !

Do you have examples of the inter face you use?

@mdnurhfz Yes, one of the better examples is in my CAD E70 video.

I have a friend who has a 32 channel mixer in his home studio, and its useless.

@GaragebandandBeyond
Can I use a normal mixer with firewire and then use an firewire2USB adapter ?
Will I have then these different channels? I got a computer without a firewire port.

@Mtcrazyguitar Short answser... just like in the video. NO you won't get separate channels.
GaragebandandBeyond 7 months ago
@Mtcrazyguitar You may not want to do that. That would be like trying to connect a straw to a fire hydrant, unless you plan on using a USB 3.0 interface. And unfortunately it wouldn't give you the different channels either.
However... you should be able to purchase a fairly inexpensive FireWire 800 interface for your computer to solve your problem. That should do the trick. :-)
Cheers.

what do you use to get separate tracks for say each drum so you can tweak levels later?
platter4 7 months ago
@platter4 you would need an interface that can handle as many inputs as you need.
