@derf9253 the band is from stony brook long island, they got together in '67 i saw them many times in stony brook in a bar called tooeys right near the state college in stony brook, their original name was the soft white underbelly, after they became famous, they would do bar shows as the SWU to tune up for a tour and break in new music.

@yourunclehank1 I read a quote from the drummer who said it was about a bj he received in the back seat of a car from a girl on New Year's Eve. She made her little brother (Who was in the front seat!) cover his eyes with his hands while she did it. This story may be apocryphal, but that's what I read.

"Dominance and submission" (also known as D&s, Ds or D/s) is a set of behaviors, customs and rituals relating to the giving and accepting of dominance of one individual over another in an erotic or lifestyle context. It explores the more mental aspect of BDSM. This is also the case in many relationships not considering themselves as sadomasochistic; it is considered to be a part of BDSM if it is practiced purposefully. The range of its individual characteristics is thereby wide. :o)
@kissthesettingsun Ha ha I cut my rock teeth on these guys back in the early 70's . Saw them in a little gym when they first went on tour. They kicked ASS !!!!!!
No other band was cool enough or had enough balls to put an ME262 jetfighter on their album. This song light fires inside me when I first heard it. They have yet to extinguish. Have seen them do this one live a number of times. Eric Bloom sings it live while Al Bouchard sings it here.
I have been listening to this for 30 yyyyeeeeaaarrrrs, they are a forruner band for heavy metal, so underated, I play it for my son who is 27 he say, kick ass pop, I heartily agree.....rock on BOC........
Interesting about the MK-ULTRA and LSD mind control experiments. This is still being done today, but on a much wider scale, it's called disinformation and is more sublte, but more effective. When the populace is more worried about some dead entertainer than what the Govenment is doing to them, that's mind control on a grand scale.
I believe Charles the ginning boy is actually Charles Manson and Susy is Susan Atkins. This song is about the whole 1960's and the effects dominating the youth; the violence, drugs, sex, and the music were all part of the plot. The murmurs in the background saying 'it will be time' are the conspirators weaving this plot against society and the world at this tumultuous time in modern history.
@Drizzlerman Great anatomy, I have thought of this plot too(though not as far as you), awesome. Thumbs up.
I realized the presence of Charles Manson first when I thought the similarities of these lyrics; didn't Charlie write about submission in his (lyrics)? T
@thelicheking What's even more profound is that Charles Manson may have been a manufactured villain of the 'Hippie' era because he was also supposedly used by the government MK-ULTRA program which used LSD experiments to create mind controlled slaves.
You never know with his status of being locked up from time to time and the way the govt. was at it's peak of conspiring and shady activity during that time. It is probable that he was used in the project and made into the manipulative cult leader he became using LSD on his family members to further control their minds and make them his slaves able to murder at his command.
Manson's music is pretty good, the only evidence I can place is that Whitey Bulger who was incarcerated when he was younger was used in LSD mind-control experiments for project MK-ULTRA and it is therefor highly likely that Charles Manson who was incarcerated during much of his youth was used in it as well and turned into the mind controlling cult leader he became upon his release.
I don't know...? Other than the name "Charles" and "Susy", nothing in the song seems to relate to the Manson legend.
As an example, the story takes place on New Years Eve, 1963-64, long before Charlie Manson ever met Susan Atkins. Likewise, Manson didn't establish the basis of his "Family", until 1967.
Now, if you've got any insights into the meaning behind lyrics of "Cagey Cretins", I'd love to hear them. *S*
@skeilak I don't know either but Susy and her brother Charles the grinning boy sounds like some manson family type stuff. As for Cagey Cretins I think is about a sad loner who wants to get laid before the end of his college semester and in suing madness from not getting any sex. Or something along those lines and being very lonely in the state of Maine.
@skeilak haha I think the writer of the song said something about it being about an escaped mental patient or some deranged loner. This song, that one and Harvester of Eyes are pretty awesome odd songs.
Well, "Harvester of Eyes", to me anyway, always made a certain sense, if you think of it as being about a guy who produces TV Commercials, yet utterly disdains the brain-dead viewers.
A friend of mine, a professional Graphic Artist, still calls himself a "Harvester of Eyes", because after all, isn't that really what he does for a living?
"Astronomy" was another one we always tried to find the deeper meaning of.
What are Miss. Carrie Nurse and Susy Dear hoping to find?
@skeilak Yeah I always thought Harvester of Eyes was something along those lines but the part where ric does the harvester of eyes and talks about looking inside the garbage cans to see if theirs any eyes inside makes me think of a homeless whacko looking for a drugs stashed in garbage . But yeah as for Astronomy it might be about being in a mental hospital particularly the part of ' four winds at the four winds bar two doors locked and windows barred one doors left to take you in the other one
@Drizzlerman just mirrors him. Because in most mental hospitals the windows are barred and they have two doors at the end of the a hall to take people in and out and the door at the end has a mirrored window. Astronomy could also be about a meeting with a woman whilst in the hospital but ultimately having to be alone because she is a lesbian; Carrie nurse and Susie dear have some encounter. I've read that part is about lesbianism.
My hat's off to you, Sir. You've really thought these things through.
Like most, I never understood the Harvester "end rant", which does indeed, throw a darker, creepier shadow on the song, until I found the lyrics on the 'Net.
The Mental Hospital imagery does make sense for Astronomy. Although, I always felt the lesbian connection between Carrie and Susie, seemed a bit too "obvious" - if that's the right word?
I loved BOC for more decades than I care to remember, ever since my...
... friend won the "Secret Treaties" album from a broad-walk wheel, and selected it, only because it had a cool Me-262 on the cover. We put it on the turntable, and we were hooked! (Proving, sometimes, you can judge a book by it's cover.) Still one of my Top 10 Albums.
Over the years, many have tried to find the deeper meaning in BOC lyrics. Not with a lot of success.
Me? I'll probably never know for sure. But, I still love their hugely underrated music, and I can live with that.
@skeilak YEAH I've been into B.O.C. for 6 years after hearing '(don't fear) the reaper in this ps2 game Road . I've seen them live about 5 0r 6 times and they're my favorite classic rock act. They have many amazing songs that are fun, rockin, energetic an most of all not stupid. They take their listeners on a trip. Astrnomy could also be about the stars and how our fates are mapped in the stars. I've also heard it is about Imaginos and the onset of the first world war and how it relates toccul
Ah..? Most latter-day fans I've met, discovered BÖC with "Veteran of the Psychic Wars", from the "Heavy Metal" movie soundtrack, which is still a pretty ass-kicking song.
And that's probably the best thing about BÖC, is that most of their music has really held up, over the decades, in a way that many classic rock groups haven't.
I remember back in the day, BÖC being called, "The thinking man's Sabbath.", and I think there's something to that. I know that BÖC fans are "supposed"...
... to not like Sabbath, but I always thought that was stupid. While there were some deliberate similarities, in their early work, BÖC really came into their own with Secret Treaties, and never looked back.
Glad you got to see them live. Last time for me, was about 15 years ago.
It's a shame that these guys never got the popular recognition they deserved, but in a little twist of irony, they now have a "cult" following. A cult I'm happy to be a member of. *S*
@skeilak They were signed to Columbia Revords as being the American Black Sabbath. They started off as a psychedelic rock band with a west coast vibe prior to 1970 '71 or so. Then in '72 when they released their debut they were supposed to be dark and occult or Heavy Metal. The members of the band all thought it was a bit silly but they went along with it and sort of fulfilled the record labels desire to have a stateside Sabbath. To me B.O.C. made more expansive music than Sabbath.
I didn't want to say that, outright, in case it offended you, but you are correct. They were originally marketed as the American Sabbath, only with an even more spooky rep. And yeah, they were going along with it, until Secret Treaties. Where, as I said, they really came into their own.
And I agree, BÖC went on to become a much more interesting band than Sabbath did. Especially, post-Ozzie.
Although, I did enjoy them both on the 1980 "Black & Blue Tour", at Madison Square Garden.
@skeilak Sabbath is/was a great band too. According to Albert Bouchard the first three albums of the black & white era were their descriptions of Hell. They wanted to do it as best as they could and without being like Sabbath in the sense that they flirted with Satanism and witchcraft. But after the black & white era they became more radio oriented and got their most fame with Donald Roeser's (don't fear) the reaper. Many Christian groups found the bands music to be dangerous and anti-christian.
It's hard to say exactly when "Heavy Metal" was born. I know some people claim it was 1964, because The Who, Hendrix, The Kinks, Steppenwolf, Grand Funk Railroad, and Vanilla Fudge, existed then... But would you really call what they were doing at the time, true "Metal"? Perhaps more like, "Proto-Metal"?
IMHO, I still have to go with Black Sabbath, in 1970, as the first true, deliberate, Heavy Metal band. I think they own that place in Rock History.
For my money this is Buck's finest solo. Pure unadulterated full on attack. Take no prisoners! I only have to think about this track and the hairs on the back on my neck stand up.
yeah, when i saw them do that in 76, 77, that wuz before i knew of how southern bands also ain't afraid of havin' more than one prima-donna lead dood in front -- totally ragin', electric assault, starry-eyed schoolboy'z fantasy come alive, rock on!
Man, what a guitar riff. This is what made BOC different than the rest. They had a least 3 different vocalists and sometimes 3 guitars. Often imitated, never duplicated, The Amazing, Blue Oyster Cult.
@mechanicaltruck Dude, there's a ton of great bands in the HOF and BOC should be one of them . Agreed, there are some unworthy non-rockers, too, but hey...life goes off !!!
@CanadianCatastrophes Progressive metal is unworthy of BoC. They are, and always shall be one of the top HARD ROCK outfits of all time. Listen to them, NOTHING about this says metal. BoC is a ROCK AND ROLL band, not german military dirges played on guitars.
the first three albums of blue oyster cult showed their true musical potential. the albums preceeding this one became so much commercial. great to able to relive these relics.

Their first 2 albums in the early 70s were unreal and under rated.

No other band was cool enough or had enough balls to put an ME262 jetfighter on their album. This song light fires inside me when I first heard it. They have yet to extinguish. Have seen them do this one live a number of times. Eric Bloom sings it live while Al Bouchard sings it here.

Drizzlerman 2 years ago 8
I believe Charles the grinning boy is actually Prince Charles and Susy is Susan Boyle!
freddyabba 2 years ago 4
HA maybe but if you go along with the 1960's American turmoil theme then it is likely Manson and Atkins
Drizzlerman 2 years ago
@Drizzlerman Great anatomy, I have thought of this plot too(though not as far as you), awesome. Thumbs up.
I realized the presence of Charles Manson first when I thought the similarities of these lyrics; didn't Charlie write about submission in his (lyrics)? T
thelicheking 2 years ago 2
@thelicheking What's even more profound is that Charles Manson may have been a manufactured villain of the 'Hippie' era because he was also supposedly used by the government MK-ULTRA program which used LSD experiments to create mind controlled slaves.
Drizzlerman 2 years ago
Agreed upon but I do not believe he was in the supposed MK-ULTRA -program, since I haven't found any real evidence.
thelicheking 2 years ago
You never know with his status of being locked up from time to time and the way the govt. was at it's peak of conspiring and shady activity during that time. It is probable that he was used in the project and made into the manipulative cult leader he became using LSD on his family members to further control their minds and make them his slaves able to murder at his command.
Drizzlerman 2 years ago
@Drizzlerman Yes O.K. what's the source?
Got me interested there, but I'd love to read about "the evidence".
Love Charles Mansons music. Pure genius.
thelicheking 2 years ago
Manson's music is pretty good, the only evidence I can place is that Whitey Bulger who was incarcerated when he was younger was used in LSD mind-control experiments for project MK-ULTRA and it is therefor highly likely that Charles Manson who was incarcerated during much of his youth was used in it as well and turned into the mind controlling cult leader he became upon his release.

@Drizzlerman
You do realize that when I was in Junior High, we used to discuss the theory of whether or not this song had something to do with Charlie Manson..?
The band says, "No."
I believe them.
skeilak 8 months ago
@skeilak They may say it doesn't but the writer of the song Sandy Pearlman might say otherwise.
Drizzlerman 8 months ago
@Drizzlerman
skeilak 8 months ago
@skeilak I don't know either but Susy and her brother Charles the grinning boy sounds like some manson family type stuff. As for Cagey Cretins I think is about a sad loner who wants to get laid before the end of his college semester and in suing madness from not getting any sex. Or something along those lines and being very lonely in the state of Maine.
Drizzlerman 8 months ago
@Drizzlerman
That's a much better explanation than my friends and I ever came up with, while sittin' on the hood of a Chevy, downing Bud tallboys...
"Repeating taste of high-heeled... shoe, An eel is waiting under... the train, Being chased around, by the neighbor's cat..."
It must have been very lonely in the State of Maine...
skeilak 8 months ago
@skeilak haha I think the writer of the song said something about it being about an escaped mental patient or some deranged loner. This song, that one and Harvester of Eyes are pretty awesome odd songs.
Drizzlerman 8 months ago
@Drizzlerman
Carrie Nurse and Susy Dear hoping to find?
skeilak 8 months ago
@skeilak Yeah I always thought Harvester of Eyes was something along those lines but the part where ric does the harvester of eyes and talks about looking inside the garbage cans to see if theirs any eyes inside makes me think of a homeless whacko looking for a drugs stashed in garbage . But yeah as for Astronomy it might be about being in a mental hospital particularly the part of ' four winds at the four winds bar two doors locked and windows barred one doors left to take you in the other one
Drizzlerman 8 months ago
@Drizzlerman just mirrors him. Because in most mental hospitals the windows are barred and they have two doors at the end of the a hall to take people in and out and the door at the end has a mirrored window. Astronomy could also be about a meeting with a woman whilst in the hospital but ultimately having to be alone because she is a lesbian; Carrie nurse and Susie dear have some encounter. I've read that part is about lesbianism.
Drizzlerman 8 months ago
@Drizzlerman

Over the years, many have tried to find the deeper meaning in BOC lyrics. Not with a lot of success.
Me? I'll probably never know for sure. But, I still love their hugely underrated music, and I can live with that.
skeilak 8 months ago
@skeilak
Hugely underrated music? BOC is one of the extremely few (less than 5 i think) metal bands praised by critics.
Black Sabbath was just another minor metal band with a few nice songs at first albums. There were thousands much better than BS before 1970.
I know many people who believe that BS was a great band and an equal amount of people who laugh at gay voice and style of Ozzy and BS.

I know that BÖC fans are "supposed"...
skeilak 8 months ago
@skeilak
... to not like Sabbath, but I always thought that was stupid.
skeilak 8 months ago 2
@skeilak They were signed to Columbia Revords as being the American Black Sabbath. They started off as a psychedelic rock band with a west coast vibe prior to 1970 '71 or so. Then in '72 when they released their debut they were supposed to be dark and occult or Heavy Metal. The members of the band all thought it was a bit silly but they went along with it and sort of fulfilled the record labels desire to have a stateside Sabbath. To me B.O.C. made more expansive music than Sabbath.
Drizzlerman 8 months ago
@Drizzlerman
Although, I did enjoy them both on the 1980 "Black & Blue Tour", at Madison Square Garden.
skeilak 8 months ago
@skeilak Sabbath is/was a great band too. According to Albert Bouchard the first three albums of the black & white era were their descriptions of Hell. They wanted to do it as best as they could and without being like Sabbath in the sense that they flirted with Satanism and witchcraft. But after the black & white era they became more radio oriented and got their most fame with Donald Roeser's (don't fear) the reaper. Many Christian groups found the bands music to be dangerous and anti-christian.

What happened at 1964? What music genre began dominating the world?
dancing0being 8 months ago
@dancing0being
I'm sorry. I don't know what your getting at...
1964 saw the peek of the Surfin' & Hot Rod craze, with the Beach Boys being kings of that genre.
But as a year of stylistic transition, it also saw the Beatles began the "British Invasion".

Heavy metal was born mate.
dancing0being 8 months ago
@dancing0being
It's hard to say exactly when "Heavy Metal" was born.

Man, what a guitar riff. This is what made BOC different than the rest. They had a least 3 different vocalists and sometimes 3 guitars. Often imitated, never duplicated, The Amazing, Blue Oyster Cult.
