A very good article on this theme is available on the NATO website. For example when Iceland signed the Treaty in 1949, it did not have and still does not have armed forces. There is no legal impediment to forming them, but Iceland has chosen not to have any. Iceland is a NATO member.
Today, Iceland with its population of 320 000 is represented on all of NATOs principal committees. Since 2006, it has also assumed the responsibility of a host and user nation to NATO infrastructure based in Iceland. Iceland also contributes civilian peacekeepers to NATO-led operations. It regularly hosts NATO exercises and events, and is taking a more active role in NATO deliberations and planning.
@NATOCOMMUNITY NATO is no peacekeeping force. NATO and Peacekeeping is conrtadictions. NATO is lead, or dominated, by nations who support/commit crimes of war (excessive use of force where they know civilinians are present, cluster bombs etc), crimes against humanity (torture, kidnapping and so on), overthrowing democaticly elllected leaders, assasinations and i can keep going on. Don't even pretend that NATO is anything about keeping the peace. Just look at the facts and evidence!
so i assumed. well then. NATO or not NATO. the only diffrence between NATO and non NATO countries is wether the nation/group we are speaking about is considerd an threat or an allie in the eyes of NATO (unless neutral of course). as for Sweden they are allies, so i guess we all should be happy in this case.
dear jayti83. NATO and Sweden actively cooperate in peace and security operations and have developed practical cooperation in many other areas. An Individual Partnership Programme lays out the programme of cooperation between Sweden and NATO. Swedish cooperation with NATO is based on a longstanding policy of military non-alignment and a firm national consensus. From this basis, the Sweden selects areas of cooperation with NATO that match joint objectives.
